Why did you decide to become a private coach?
I absolutely love using the knowledge I’ve gained over the years to help players reach their potential.

What do you enjoy most about coaching?
The satisfaction in knowing that something you are teaching is helping them come to know more about himself or herself as a player and a person.

What can a client expect from private lessons with you?
Players can expect that I will be thorough in whatever I teach. From the fundamentals of the game to specific aspects that make them better. I will take the time to understand their individual goals, whether ultimately it’s just to have fun, to make their high school team, earn a college scholarship or play at the pro level.

What is your coaching style or philosophy?
Fundamentals first and then developing a player’s personal style.

What is your favorite moment in your athletic career?
Winning the NCAA National Championship in Basketball with N.C. State University in 1983 under Jim Valvano. ESPN recently released a 30 for 30 documentary entitled, “Survive and Advance” on our accomplishments.

Do you have any success stories from coaching an athlete?
The success stories I have in coaching athletes have come in many different forms. Over the years, I’ve been able to work with many different age groups from 3rd graders to NBA players and true success has come in knowing that something I may have said or taught them was useful in their quest to get better.

Did you participate in your sport in high school and college?
I participated in high school basketball at Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, MD and earned a basketball scholarship to N.C. State University where I attended for 4 years.

What is your favorite sports related movie?
My favorite sports related movie is: Remember The Titans.

What’s your mantra or favorite saying (in the context of sport and/ or life)?
You should only worry about things that you can control.

Do you have any special talents or a surprising thing someone might not know about you?
I was a musician (singer) long before I was ever a basketball player. I have 5 music CDs released.

Who is your favorite coach and why?
I have had many great coaches at every level, but I’d have to say that my high school coach, Ernie Welch was my favorite because I wasn’t a great player early on in high school, and he saw potential in me when he coached me as a junior varsity player and spent a lot of his time helping to develop me into a great student-athlete.
