GENERAL

How does CoachUp work?

CoachUp is service that connects athletes with private coaches. We believe that private coaching is the secret to reaching the next level in sports + life.


We are the nation's leader in private sports coaching, with thousands of coaches on our site in every sport and in every state across the U.S. We are a company founded and run by active athletes and coaches. Our founders recognized the need for a site where athletes can find private coaches to help them reach the next level, and where great coaches can connect with motivated and hard-working athletes.

To navigate our site, search for coaches in your area (using your zip code or city and state) and filter the results to your sport. From there, you can sort by distance, price, or recommendation, and then view the resulting coach profiles to see which coach would be the best fit for you.

  • If there is one coach you'd like to get started with, go ahead and click to book sessions with the coach. Select how many sessions you would like to start with. Once the session-booking process is completed, your contact information will be sent to the coach and the coach will reach out to you to set up the sessions. If the coach you've chosen does not work out to be a good fit for you, or if you are not fully satisfied, we will work with you to find another coach and transfer your payment to him/her; or, if you prefer, we will refund your payment in full.
  • If you are choosing among multiple coaches in your area, or you would like additional information before booking, feel free to send them a message through the "Contact Coach" button on their profiles. That message will be e-mailed to them and their responses will be e-mailed back to you.
  • If there are no coaches in your area that you are interested in for private training, please leave your contact information with us and our Concierge Service will look for a coach for you for free. We will then notify you when we find a qualified coach who meets your requirements.

Are coaching sessions covered by insurance?

Yes.


We are proud to announce that all coaching sessions booked through CoachUp now include liability protection insurance for up to $100,000 at absolutely no cost to the coach or the athlete. This coverage provides full protection for any accidental athlete injuries and accidental facility damage that occurs during a training session. This type of insurance would normally cost a coach upwards of $200 per year, but we're giving it to the CoachUp community at absolutely zero cost. The only requirement for a session to be covered by our insurance policy is that the session must be booked through CoachUp.

Is CoachUp international?

Not right now, but we plan to be.


At present, CoachUp serves the U.S. market, so only U.S.-based coaches may register for profiles on the site. Where is CoachUp headquartered?

Why is it important to book through CoachUp?

It is our policy that all coaching sessions must be booked through CoachUp. Therefore, we do not allow the exchange of contact information before a coaching session is booked. Once coaching sessions are booked, the coach will automatically receive the athlete's full contact information and the athlete will automatically receive the coach's contact information.

How do I receive payment for my sessions?

We currently offer Direct Deposit (ACH), a safe and secure option for receiving payment for the sessions you complete through CoachUp.

Can I coach more than one sport on CoachUp?

Yes!


It's easy to sign up to coach more than one sport on CoachUp! Simply click on "Add another sport" at the top of your dashboard, review the pre-populated fields (with the information from your first sport), and submit. After a short approval process, your profile will be viewable in search results for that sport.

How do I become a CoachUp Coach?

If you have an interest in becoming a CoachUp private coach, please apply here. It's free to apply to be a coach on CoachUp - and free to join if you are accepted - and the signup process is quick and easy. Of course, we cannot accept applicants whose coaching experience or character fail to meet our standards. After you submit your coach application, our Coach Selection Committee takes a close look at it. Once your profile has been reviewed, you will receive an automated e-mail letting you know either that your profile has been approved, or that we need more information before we can approve it. The approval e-mail will give you instructions for logging into your account, adding a profile photo, and editing your profile to make it look the way you want it to look.

I'm a current NCAA athlete, can I become a CoachUp coach?

We couldn't be more excited that you're interested in joining the CoachUp team. Unfortunately, the NCAA has strict regulations because you're currently an NCAA athlete, and we don't want to jeopardize your eligibility to compete.

My application has been approved and my profile is now live on CoachUp - what's next?

Once your profile is approved, here are six important steps you should take to make the most of CoachUp:


  1. Upload a profile photo and action shots. Coaches with profile photos see 5x more packages booked than coaches without a photo. Visit your "Profile" tab on your CoachUp dashboard to put a face to your name.

  2. Enhance your resume. Put your best foot forward by providing a more information on your coaching and athletic background to attract as many clients to book you as a private coach. Visit your "Profile" to compile your top athletic highlights, coaching experience, session overview, and coaching specialities in a succinct, bullet-form manner.

  3. Upload testimonials. Coaches with testimonials book 2x more training sessions than coaches without testimonials. Visit your "Profile" to upload testimonials to provide parents and athletes more reason to book you as a private coach.

  4. Update your pricing. The rates you offer through CoachUp are completely up to you; after all, you're the entrepreneur! Visit the "Set Pricing" tab on your CoachUp dashboard to set your session rates, finalize your package sizing, and enable group sessions -- you can edit your pricing table at any time.

    Coaches generally prefer to offer discounted session rates on larger packages in order to encourage athletes to book more sessions up front. Also, remember that you can offer custom packages to athletes by visiting the "Messages" tab on your dashboard.

  5. Verify your contact info. Don't miss out on clients that book you and need to get in touch. Visit the "Account" tab to verify your email, phone number, and coaching address.

  6. Respond to messages and job leads. Coaches who respond to messages and job leads within 24 hours see a significant increase in the number of athletes who book sessions. We'll send you an email when you receive a new message or job lead, so keep an eye out. Responding is simple: reply directly to the email or respond to messages by visiting the "Messages" tab on your dashboard.

Do I need to report my earnings from CoachUp income tax purposes?

The short answer is, "Yes, you DO need to report your income."


Under the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 6050W, CoachUp will file a 1099-K form to the IRS for coaches who earn over $20,000 AND complete over 200 packages (packages consist of single or multiple training sessions) in a calendar year through CoachUp. Coaches who meet this requirement will receive a copy of their 1099-K via U.S. Postal service by January 31 in order to accurately report their taxes.

One thing to remember - we are not tax aficionados! Please consult a tax professional or consultant for advice about your tax status and reporting requirements. For more information, please visit the IRS website.

Am I responsible for providing a location or facility for my coaching sessions?

Yes, our coaches are responsible for finding a facility or location for their coaching sessions.


We completely understand that this is one of the biggest obstacles to conducting a great coaching session. As a result, we're working hard to compile a list of recommended facilities and offer discounted access to partnership facilities in the near future.

In the meantime, we recommend our coaches find a local gym, field or facility (asking other coaches in your area or searching for facilities on the internet may yield some clutch results!). Many coaches on CoachUp have found it effective to include facility fees in their session rates to compensate for any added costs that you may incur. If you choose to do this, we recommend that you specify in your profile that facility fees are included in your session rates.

What is "Coach Score"?

How does pricing work for coaches?

As the coach, and manager of your private coaching business, you set your pricing. You determine how much you charge your clients for single session and multi-session packages. You must offer a single session but can offer up to 3 multi-session packages in denominations that you determine.

There is no fee for coaches to have a profile on CoachUp. However, when we send you a client, CoachUp deducts 25% of a new client's first booking. For all other packages, whether it's a rebooking with an existing client or a booking with a client you invited to CoachUp, we charge a 3%-8% service fee. This fee goes down as you level up your Coach Score. CoachUp's fees cover our $100k insurance policy on all sessions, credit card processing, digital marketing, and more.

Please visit the "Set Pricing" tab on your CoachUp Dashboard to confirm your rates for single-session and multi-session packages. Also, you can set the duration of your sessions, customize your package sizes, and enable group session packages.

How do I indicate that I'm currently unavailable to coach?

Enable 'Vacation Mode' to put your business on pause.


Vacation Mode temporarily prevents new clients from booking sessions with you while you're unavailable. Please take advantage of this feature if you need to put your coaching business on pause -- to enable Vacation Mode, visit the "Availability" tab of your dashboard.

If you're leaving town, going on vacation or don't currently have time to coach, please take advantage of this feature.

Is there a referral program for inviting clients to CoachUp?

CoachUp waives the 25% Finder's Fee if you invite a client to CoachUp

COACHES - PAYMENTS

When does CoachUp pay me for the coaching sessions I complete?

In order to be paid for the sessions you complete, you must go to the Sessions tab of your dashboard and click "mark complete" next to each completed session. Otherwise, our system does not recognize that the session has been completed. If you own a smartphone, you can also mark sessions complete with our iPhone or Android mobile apps.

Direct Deposit (ACH)

Direct deposit payments are issued 48 hours after you mark a session complete. The time it takes to receive a direct deposit payment is approximately one business day from when the payment is issued (this time may vary depending on your bank).

Please note: Weekends and holidays are not business days. For example, if your payment is issued on Friday, the next business day would be Monday.

How do I receive payment for my sessions?

We currently offer Direct Deposit (ACH), a safe and secure option for receiving payment for the sessions you complete through CoachUp.

Direct Deposit (ACH)

Direct deposit (ACH) transfers payments directly into your bank account. If you would like to be paid via direct deposit, go to the Account tab on your CoachUp dashboard, scroll down to Payment Settings and click "Manage Direct Deposit". Follow the prompts to add your banking information and then click the "Submit" button.

We issue direct deposit payments via Stripe, a third-party payment provider that is completely encrypted, safe and secure. Read more about Stripe's security here. There are no fees associated with receiving payments via direct deposit.

How do I set up direct deposit?

To set up your direct deposit information, go to the Account tab on your CoachUp dashboard, scroll down to Payment Settings and click "Manage Direct Deposit". If you have not already set up a payment method, you will see a blank form titled "Set Up Direct Deposit". Simply fill in your information and click the "Submit" button (you can change this information anytime by clicking "Delete Saved Account").

What information do I need?

You need the following pieces of information to set up direct deposit:

  • Your legal name. (This can be different from your CoachUp account name)
  • Your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) (see below)
  • The ABA routing number of the bank account to which you'd like to receive payments. It's the first 9 digits along the bottom of preprinted checks. You can also usually get this information from your bank's website.
  • The account number of the bank account to which you'd like to receive payments. This number is the second group of digits along the bottom of checks.

What is my Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)?

A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is an identifying number used for tax purposes in the United States. A TIN may be a Social Security number (SSN), an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

  • SSN: Used by individuals who have the right to work in the United States.
  • ITIN: Used by non-citizens who may or may not have the right to work in the US.
  • EIN: Used by business entities (for example, corporations, LLCs or sole proprietorships).

Why does CoachUp need to know my TIN?

In order to issue your payments, we must submit your TIN to Stripe, our secure payment provider. Stripe only uses your TIN for identity verification, and does not provide this information to the IRS. We do not store this information in any of our systems.

Is my personal information secure?

CoachUp is committed to your safety. We adhere to industry-leading security precautions to protect your identity and your data. Our practices are verified by VeriSign.

ATHLETES/PARENTS

Can I contact a coach before the session?

Yes!


If you would like more information about a coach before booking a session, you can click on the "Contact Coach" button on his or her profile to direct a message to the coach. That message will be e-mailed to the coach, and his or her response will be e-mailed back to you.

Because of our privacy and anti-spamming policies, we manually review each message and do not allow the transfer of any personal information (including last names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc). When a session is booked and paid for, the contact information for both the athlete and the coach will be exchanged.

We also have a 100% money-back guarantee: if you are not fully satisfied with your coach, we will either transfer your remaining scheduled sessions to another CoachUp coach of your choosing or refund your payment in full.

Can I pay my coach directly?

No


In order to reserve your coach and your session, CoachUp requires an upfront payment though the CoachUp website. This policy ensures our ability to conduct background checks on all our coaches as well as the safety of the transaction and removes the hassle of the money exchange between you and your private coach.

It also allows us to offer other services, such as our 100% money-back guarantee and the insurance plan that covers every coaching session booked through CoachUp. CoachUp's terms of service state that coaching relationships that start on CoachUp must be re-booked through CoachUp - so subsequent sessions need to be booked on the site.

Can I set up a coaching session for a group?

Yes!


Our coaches now have the ability to offer group session packages for up to four athletes. Feel free to message a coach through his or her profile to request custom group session pricing.

Can I stay and watch my son/daughter practice? Do you recommend that I do?

Sure!


We do recommend that you stay and watch, especially in the beginning, to make sure that you have selected the right coach for your child. Our system encourages feedback, and it is extremely helpful to our coaches. So your willingness to watch and provide feedback both to the coach and to us is very helpful to all of us. Please keep in mind that the facility that the coach uses may require that you pay an entrance fee.

As a reminder, we offer 100% money-back guarantee on all sessions booked through CoachUp. If the coaching session you've booked for your son or daughter doesn't live up to your expectations, then please contact us and we'll take care of you – we promise.

Can I stop or cancel my CoachUp session(s)?

Absolutely


All sessions booked through CoachUp are protected by our 100% money back guarantee. If you are unsatisfied with your coach for any reason, just let us know within 48 hours of completing your first session. We will issue you a full refund. Outside of that 48-hour window, we will issue a gift certificate for the the total value of your remaining sessions.

We fully understand that there are unique circumstances so feel free to contact us. Bottom line - we will make it right.

Can I take multiple coaching sessions per week?

Sure, knock yourself out!


The only rule is that, out of consideration for your coach, all sessions in a given package must occur within one year of the first session.

Do I need to bring my own equipment to my CoachUp session(s)?

It will depend on the sport. Just ask your private coach after you get connected.

Do you offer any discounts?

Occasionally


We occasionally offer special promotional discounts for booking multi-session packages during certain periods. Generally, the more sessions you book, the more you save, though our coaches are entirely responsible for setting their own pricing.

Most of our coaches choose to offer discounted pricing for booking multi-session-packages because they like to create long-term relationships with their athletes, and because multi-session-packages reflect a serious commitment to improvement.

Does CoachUp offer a free initial coaching session?

Unfortunately we don't, but…


CoachUp does not offer a free initial coaching session. But we are so confident that you will have a great experience that we offer a 100% money-back guarantee through our 48-hour refund policy. This policy covers you whether you book just one session or a package of sessions. If you are unhappy after your first session, you can let us know and we will either help you select a new coach or refund the full price of the package you selected.

How do I choose the right coach?

CoachUp enables you to search for your coach by location and sport. Your search results will allow you to see the profiles of private coaches matching your search criteria. It is important to consider all the following elements when choosing the right coach for you:

How do I pay for coaching sessions through CoachUp?

All coaching sessions are paid for in advance through the CoachUp website. Payment information is gathered on the CoachUp website and the transaction is processed right away. This guarantees that your payment is secure, that your selected coach will confirm your training sessions, and that your coach is covered by the CoachUp liability insurance and compensated fairly for his or her time.

Training sessions can be booked individually or in packages. Prices vary by coach, location, sport, and number of sessions booked - please keep in mind that CoachUp coaches are entirely responsible for setting their own pricing.

CoachUp accepts payments made via the following major credit cards: MasterCard, VISA, Discover, and American Express.

How does CoachUp vet its coaches?

To ensure high-quality coaches, CoachUp takes each coach's application through a multi-step vetting process prior to permitting him or her to list coaching services on CoachUp. We manually review all coach profiles, and we approve only those profiles that reflect adequate experience as a coach or athlete.

In addition, every coach on the site in a given year has undergone and passed a national sex-offender background check within the past 12 months. As the client, you can also order a real-time criminal & sex-offender background check on the coach during the booking process, or at any later time from your dashboard with just the push of a button.

Furthermore, many coach profiles include references from past CoachUp athletes. We suggest that you ask them any and all questions you might have over the phone or in an e-mail exchange prior to your first session.

How far in advance do I need to schedule coaching session(s)?

We highly recommend booking a package of sessions at least a few days in advance of starting the session, to give the coach some time to prepare. In addition, we request that you and the coach try to work out a time for subsequent sessions at least 48 hours before those sessions. However, it is up to the coach to schedule the sessions through CoachUp at whatever times are convenient for both the coach and the athlete.

If you are looking for sessions in the immediate future, there are two options:

  1. You can book a session with the coach so that your contact information is exchanged with the coach. That allows the two of you to work out a day/time that works well for both of you - possibly as early as the next day. We also offer a 100% money-back guarantee if the logistics do not end up working out.
  2. You can also message a coach (or multiple coaches) through the messaging tool on their profile to ask if they are available for the day/time you would like for the session. If/when a coach confirms, you will need to book the session(s) through CoachUp in order to receive the coach's phone number and e-mail address, and to connect and set up the session(s).
How many coaching sessions should I schedule?

We recommend that you book a package of 3, 5, or 10 sessions to start. All training sessions will help, but we see the best results after at least a few sessions, as major improvement takes time. Besides, the more sessions you book, the more you save! And all our packages come with a 100% money-back guarantee, so you can book any number of sessions with complete confidence.

How much will I be charged for a session?

The rates for private coaching through CoachUp vary by coach, location, session length, and sport. Our prices are entirely set by our coaches, and vary from $30 to over $150 per session. The average price of a one-hour CoachUp session is in the $50 – $60 range.

How often should I schedule my coaching sessions?

Ideally, you should schedule 1-2 sessions per week. You need time between sessions to practice what you learned from the last session. But we leave it up to you; many of the coaches who list their services on CoachUp have clients who do as many as three sessions per week.

One coaching session is fine to try out a new coach, but we recommend at least 10 sessions before an athlete can expect to see solid improvement.

How old must athletes be to take CoachUp sessions?

We are committed to helping people of all ages find private coaches who can help them achieve their full athletic potential. While most of our clients are young athletes between 7 and 17 years of age, many adults use Coachup as well. It's way more effective - and more fun! - than going to the gym.

What forms of payment does CoachUp accept?

We accept four major credit cards:

Our goal is to ensure that athletes enjoy their CoachUp experience, however, if you are unsatisfied with your coach for any reason, just let us know within 48 hours of completing your first session, and we will issue you a full refund. If you contact us outside of the 48-hour window, we will issue a gift certificate for the the total value of your remaining sessions.

What is the coaching style of a private coach?

The chemistry between an athlete and a private coach is very important. If the fit is not right, we will transfer the athlete's sessions to another coach, free of charge.

There should be a natural respect and friendliness between the two parties. There are many styles of instruction, so finding someone who fits your personal style is important.

Some people respond better to a coach who pushes them, while others learn better from a more laid-back coaching style. It's important for the athlete to be open and honest about what works best for him or her. Most of our coaches are experienced enough to know how much to push each athlete, if the athlete is clear about his or her goals and expectations before the session.

When talking with your private coach, be sure to describe the style of coaching that you believe works best for you.

What do athletes pay?

As the athlete you will be charged a price based on the hourly price a coach charges, this price can be found on the coach's profile. Athletes will incur a one-time only $15 Finder's Fee. This is applied only when the client and coach are first booked, and is not charged if the athlete has been brought to CoachUp by the coach. The only other charge at checkout is a 6% service fee to cover credit card processing, $100k insurance on all sessions, our 100% money-back guarantee and many other benefits.

How much does a coach cost?

As the athlete or client you will be charged based on the hourly price a coach charges.

Coaches will often offer reduce session pricing for clients booking multiple session packages, meaning purchasing a 5 session package would allot you a cost savings versus booking 5 single sessions, separately.
