We recently interviewed Coach Earnesia W. who coaches basketball with CoachUp. She provides basketball training to kids and teenagers and has high school, college, and professional basketball experience.

Tell us about yourself:

I played high school basketball in Oklahoma, college at the University of Texas and now play professionally overseas.

Why did you decide to become a private coach?

Growing up, I did not get private basketball coaching, so I like to give back to the youth now that I can. I like working with kids and helping them learn the fundamentals of basketball.

What do you enjoy most about coaching?

Coaching is two sided. Coaching helps me become a better basketball player because I am more receptive to feedback from my own coaches.

What is your coaching style or philosophy?

I am very positive and energetic. I sometimes even work out with my clients. We always focus on the fundamentals.

Who is your favorite coach and why?

Travis Mays at Texas. He was very energetic and always got his players to play hard. He was very honest with you and was a player’s coach.

What is your favorite moment in your athletic career?

Being a McDonalds All American and getting the chance to play basketball professionally despite my numerous injuries.

Did you participate in your sport in high school and college (if so, where)?

Yes, at the University of Texas

What other sports or activities do you enjoy playing or practicing?

Boxing and swimming.

What is your favorite sports related movie?

Remember the Titans and Coach Carter.

What’s your mantra or favorite saying (in the context of sport and/ or life)?

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Every time you practice you may only get a little bit better, but every time you practice you are improving.

What team do you root for most enthusiastically?

University of Texas, Los Angeles teams, and the San Antonio Spurs.

Do you have any special talents or a surprising thing someone might not know about you?

I go fishing all the time.
