How To Spike A Volleyball | CoachUp Volleyball Tips

Former college volleyball player and CoachUp coach Lok-Tin Yao shows how to spike a volleyball. The spike is a powerful and effective way to score points. Players want to jump to the ball, favoring their dominant hand and snap their wrist as they whip their arm forward.

Lok-Tin Yao: Hi, I’m Lok-Tin Yao: former collegiate volleyball player and CoachUp coach. And this is the spike. The spike is a powerful way to score and also a method to intimidate the other team. The important thing for spiking is having a good approach. For righties it’s left-right-left, and for lefties it’s right-left-right. The next thing is bringing both arms up, while with your hitting arm, you draw your elbow back, like a bow and arrow. As you swing, you want to whip your arm forward, and as you contact the ball with a nice open hand, you’re gonna snap your wrist over the top.
