COACH SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW: CRYSTALRAE S.

crysThis week our spotlight is on softball coach Crystalrae S! Crystalrae decided to become a private coach to help athletes develop in the specific areas that they would like to improve on. She enjoys working with softball players of all ages and watching them transform into not only better athletes, but stronger people as well.

Tell us a little bit about your softball career:

I began playing softball at a young age for a local recreational league. I am a former Pennridge High School player who also played for the Sellersville Belles. I played two years at Cedarville University in Ohio. I played my last two years at Spring Arbor University in Michigan. I then coached for two years at Spring Arbor University. I am now coaching softball at Abington Friends School.

What is your coaching philosophy?

My coaching philosophy is to challenge and motivate athletes to be people of character, integrity, discipline, compassion, patience, enthusiasm, composure and intensity. Success is not based on the outcome but the process; mistakes are a necessary part of learning. Athletes will take responsibility for their development by setting goals, being a dedicated teammate and having a strong worth ethic. Athletes will leave a legacy behind that others will want to follow.

Who is your favorite coach and why?

Deb Thompson who I played for and coached under at Spring Arbor University. She went above and beyond her duties as a coach to ensure that the players that left her program were not just better ball players, but better people.

What is your favorite moment in your athletic career?

Playing in the NCAA National Championship and just falling short of winning the title.

What other sports or activities do you enjoy?

I am a Physical Education teacher, so I like most sports. I do play volleyball in recreational leagues when possible.

What is your favorite sports related movie?

I have two: The Street Stops Here and Million Dollar Baby

Do you have a favorite sports saying?

You will never be what you are currently not becoming.
