We took some time to catch up with Coach Kenyon G, a private basketball coach with CoachUp. Coach Kenyon has coached players from age 5 to 35. He has a ton of basketball experience, having played college basketball as well as professional basketball overseas and in the NBA.

Tell us about yourself:

I teach everything starting with basketball fundamentals and improving on every area. I can focus on shooting, ball handling, agility, endurance, speed, strength, and more. I will make you a better player. I played college basketball at the University of Massachusetts and went on to play professionally overseas and in the NBA. I am a 2 time MVP, and all defensive player of the year.

Why did you decide to become a private coach?

I love teaching athletes on how to improve their game. I love taking them to the next level and seeing how much joy they get from their improvements while enjoying the game of basketball.

What do you enjoy most about coaching?

I enjoy seeing my students get better and smarter. It’s not just a physical sport. Teaching them how to also think about basketball instead of playing the sport all the time is important. A lot of athletes may be faster, quicker, and all of that, but if you can outthink your opponent, you have basically won half the battle already.

What can a client expect from private lessons with you?

They can expect to have fun with the game. I make the game fun. I make training and learning the game fun. And that’s what it should be about. You want to have fun playing the sport and not just play it just to be playing it. Also, expect to learn fundamentals to perfection.

What is your coaching style or philosophy?

Once you have mastered the fundamentals of basketball, the only thing that is stopping you from becoming a basketball superstar is YOU.

Who is your favorite coach and why?

I would say Doc Rivers because of his understanding of the game and how it should be played.
