More About Coach Michaela
My coaching experience spans youth, high school, collegiate, and master's athletes across a wide range of track & field events, as well as swimming and sport-specific athletic development.
As a student-athlete at the University of Colorado Boulder, I provided private coaching for middle and high school athletes in the high jump, long jump, hurdles, and middle-distance events. Following graduation, I coached a University of Colorado sophomore with no prior track experience to earn a walk-on spot on the Division I track & field team as a 200m/400m sprinter within a single season. During my time at Colorado, I also coached swimmers ages 10 and under on a USA Swimming club team.
After graduating, I served as an Assistant Coach for the MIT sprint and hurdle groups, coaching the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m/110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, and strength and conditioning. I later joined University City High School in San Diego as the Jumps and Sprints Coach, where I coached the high jump, long jump, triple jump, hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m. During my time at University City, one athlete I coached improved to 19'4" in the long jump and 51.9 seconds in the 400m, ultimately earning a track & field scholarship to the University of Oregon.
In addition to coaching track & field athletes, I have worked with soccer, lacrosse, and baseball players to improve speed, acceleration, explosiveness, agility, quickness, and overall athletic performance. My background as a collegiate multi-event athlete allows me to develop sport-specific training programs that transfer directly to performance on the field, court, or track.
I have also worked with adult and master's athletes. I coached two master's decathletes (ages 45 and 62) to qualify for the USA Masters National Decathlon Championships and helped a 31-year-old distance runner achieve a personal-best improvement of more than three minutes in the 5K.
I enjoy working with athletes of all ages and ability levels, from beginners learning proper technique to experienced competitors pursuing collegiate opportunities, national-level competition, or personal performance goals.
I am a former Division I track & field athlete and current post-collegiate heptathlete with experience competing at the highest levels of high school, collegiate, and international competition. Growing up, I competed in a wide variety of sports, including soccer, softball, basketball, diving, swimming, volleyball, and track & field. This multi-sport background shaped my belief that athletic development is built on a broad foundation of movement, coordination, strength, and confidence.
In high school, I was the 2013 Ohio State Champion in the high jump and earned All-Ohio honors 11 times across the high jump, long jump, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay. I was also a member of a state runner-up 4x400m relay team. Beyond track & field, I earned All-Ohio honors three times in volleyball and ten times in swimming and was named Conference and District Player of the Year in volleyball.
At the University of Colorado, I competed as a Division I heptathlete and earned All-Pac-12 honors in the pentathlon, high jump, and heptathlon. I qualified for the NCAA Championships in the high jump with a personal best of 5'9" and earned All-American honors in the heptathlon. My combined-events background includes the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m, giving me a unique understanding of speed, power, technique, and endurance training.
I was also recognized for academic excellence, earning First Team All-Academic honors six times in the Pac-12 and MPSF and Academic All-American honors in 2018 and 2019.
Today, I continue competing in combined events while pursuing an MD-PhD at Harvard-MIT. Most recently, I competed at the 2024 Decathlon World Championships, continuing my commitment to high-level athletic performance. Having been recruited to Division I programs in track & field, volleyball, and swimming, I understand the recruiting process and the dedication required to compete at the next level. I am passionate about helping athletes of all ages build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, and reach their athletic potential.
I specialize in developing track & field athletes across a wide range of events, including sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, and endurance disciplines. I also work with athletes from other sports who want to improve their speed, explosiveness, power, and overall athletic performance.
Every athlete begins with an assessment of their current abilities, movement patterns, strengths, and areas for improvement. From there, I create a personalized training plan tailored to their goals, experience level, and schedule.
For technical events such as hurdles, jumps, and throws, I focus on building strong fundamentals before progressing to advanced techniques. My coaching emphasizes efficient movement, event-specific drills, and skill development to maximize performance while preventing bad habits. I also incorporate strength, mobility, and injury-prevention exercises to help athletes stay healthy and continue progressing long-term.
For endurance athletes and those seeking improved fitness, I use baseline testing to establish a starting point and build a structured training plan that develops aerobic capacity, efficiency, and confidence. Athletes receive workouts and exercises to complete independently between sessions to ensure consistent progress.
In addition to event-specific coaching, I provide guidance on strength development, speed training, explosiveness, recovery, competition preparation, and nutrition. My goal is to help every athlete become faster, stronger, more resilient, and more confident—whether they are pursuing personal improvement, competing at the varsity level, or striving for collegiate athletics.

Michaela is the best! 10/10! She has helped our daughters improve strength and speed, and it’s showing in all the sports they play.
Yunhee (CoachUp client)
I started my sessions with the goal of improving my sprinting form and ultimately getting faster. Michaela really took the time to understand what I was looking to achieve and applied it directly to the training, which made a noticeable difference even in the first session. Training indoors during the winter was also a huge plus. After just one session, I felt confident that with consistency, I’d see significant improvement.
In the second session, we focused on different running drills, and I could already feel a change in my form. I’m excited for the upcoming sessions and looking forward to making even more progress!

Michaela has so much knowledge about high jump and I’m grateful to her for sharing that with my 16 yr old daughter. It’s only been two sessions but Abby has learned so much about proper technique from Michaela that it’s really changed how she thinks about jumping. Can’t wait to continue their work together!

Coach Michaela was a great coach. After one session my daughter said "I learned more in that one session than I did all last season". Looking forward to more coaching sessions!

My daughter enjoyed the first session and is looking forward to the next!
Marni (CoachUp client)
Coach Michaela is awesome! My daughter, 9, watched the Olympics over the summer and fell in love with the long jump. She has no track and field experience, but Coach Michaela has done a wonderful job of meeting her where she is-- at the beginning-- and building her skillset. Coach Michaela is very encouraging, positive, and patient. We feel fortunate to have found her!
Roma (CoachUp client)
Had my first session with Coach Michaela and I can't say enough good things about her. I don't exactly fit into a neat box in terms of my background and goals, but Michaela was able to understand my needs and translate that into a great workout where I learned so much and had a lot of fun. So much to work on and I can't wait for my next workout. I plan to have her design a monthly plan for me, workouts that I will do on my own, and then we will continue to meet every few weeks for form critique or to learn new skills. A little about my background, I compete in the lesser-known sport of dog agility and want to improve my speed. I have competed in the past in swimming, triathlons, long distance running but never had any sprint training. I am middle aged and fit but just don't know how to sprint.

Mike, distance runner (Testimonial)
I came to Michaela wanting to improve my fitness and run a faster 5k. I originally thought I could train by myself, but I kept getting injuries and never got any better. Michaela gave me the best customized training plans and helped me through hard workouts. She always has something for me to do, even on days that we don't meet 1-1! My fitness has improved immensely, and I ran a PR in the 5k by 3 minutes and 26 seconds! I feel healthier than ever, and my love for running has returned.
Olivia, heptathlete (Testimonial)
I am a high schooler who was new to the heptathlon when I met Michaela. What was great was that she started with the very basics so I could understand. It was difficult to learn 7 events but Michaela helped me manage everything and always gave me advice for injury prevention so I could stay healthy. I completed my first heptathlon and can't wait for more!
David, master's decathlete (Testimonial)
Michaela was my decathlon coach in San Diego. As a 62 year old, I have to be careful with my knees and hips. Michaela helped me keep my joints healthy and came up with creative ways to get better at all ten events without putting too much stress on my joints. We met twice a week for technical work, and she gave me workouts to do on the other days of the week. I am impressed with her knowledge of all ten events in track and field, and I feel like I can trust her with anything.
Jaida, Division I sprinter (Testimonial)
As a college sophomore, I had no experience with track and field. I had played tennis in high school, but I really wanted to become a Division I sprinter. I worked with Michaela for one summer. She taught me everything, from how to use blocks to how to run the curve and even the most basic sprint mechanics. We met three times per week, and she pushed me through tough workouts that I could never have done on my own. She gave me workouts to do on my own for the other days of the week, which helped me stay fit. Any time I had some pain in my shins or calves, she adjusted the workout so I could still get fit without injuring myself, and she gave me lots of tips for strengthening my shins to keep them healthy! She even helped me figure out what to eat in the mornings before workouts to help me feel better. My 400 time went from 68 seconds in May to 57 seconds in August, and my 200 time went from 28.8 seconds in May to 25.4 seconds in August! When she moved away, she wrote me a custom workout plan so I could keep training until the track and field tryouts in October. And I MADE THE TEAM! Being a Division I athlete has changed my life, and I couldn't have done it without Michaela.
