More About Coach Michaela

While I was a student-athlete at the University of Colorado Boulder, I offered private coaching lessons to middle and high school track and field athletes in Boulder (high jump, long jump, hurdles, middle-distance). During the summer after my graduation, I coached a sophomore at CU towards earning a walk-on spot on the CU Division I team as a 200/400 meter runner (she had never run track before that summer). I also coached swimmers ages 10 and under on a USA swimming club team while I was at CU. After graduating from CU, I spent one year as an assistant coach for the MIT sprints and hurdles team, coaching the 100, 200, 400, 110/100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, and strength & conditioning. Then, I spent one year as a jumps and sprints coach at University City High School in San Diego, coaching the high jump, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, 100, 200, 400, and 800. While in San Diego, I also coached two Master's athletes (age 45 and 62) in the men's decathlon, and both athletes qualified for the USA Master's National Decathlon championships. I also coached a 31 year old distance runner towards a 3 min+ personal best in the 5k.

I was the 2013 Ohio high school state champion in the high jump and earned All-Ohio honors 11 times during my high school career in high jump, long jump, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4x400, and 4x800. I was a part of a state runner-up 4x400 team. As a Division I heptathlete at the University of Colorado, I earned all-PAC 12 honors in the pentathlon, high jump, and heptathlon. I was an NCAA qualifier in the high jump with a personal best of 5'9" and an All-American in the heptathlon. As a heptathlete, I compete in the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m. I was named First Team All-Academic in the PAC-12 and MPSF 6 times, and I was an Academic All-American in 2018 and 2019. Now, I compete post-collegiately in the heptathlon while pursuing an MD-PhD at Harvard-MIT. Furthermore, as a high school volleyball player and swimmer, I was named All-Ohio 3 times in volleyball and 10 times in swimming. I was conference player of the year and district player of the year in volleyball during my senior high school season. I was recruited to Division I programs for volleyball, swimming, and track & field and believe that young athletes benefit from developing a wide range of skills.

For skill and power events such as hurdles, jumps, and throws, I will begin by assessing the athlete's current skill level. From there, I will teach specific drills that focus on the athlete's weaknesses in their event. I will often begin with very basic drills to ensure that the athlete does not practice bad habits and has a strong foundation to build upon. I will also incorporate strengthening exercises for injury prevention - my goal is for athletes of all ages to strengthen everything from small stabilizers to larger muscle groups to promote the athlete's long-term health, both on and off the track. I will develop personal training plans to develop the athlete's speed, strength, and explosiveness. Many field event sessions will be very technical, focusing on developing excellent technique in the event.

For endurance athletes and athletes who are aiming to increase their overall fitness, we will begin with baseline fitness testing and then build a custom fitness plan. If applicable, I will send the athlete home with "homework" and exercises/workouts that can be completed on their own. While with the athlete, I will focus on technique and will prescribe more difficult training sessions that require my presence to get the most out of the workout.

For every athlete, I will build a custom training plan that suits the athlete's goals, skill level, and availability for 1-1 sessions. The training plan will include workouts that can be done outside of our 1-1 sessions to ensure that the athlete is training consistently, recovering appropriately, and preventing injuries with rehabilitation exercises. I will also offer advice on mental preparation for competition as well as nutrition suggestions for pre- and post- practice or meets. My holistic training approach will help you maximize your fitness gains and minimize injuries!

Great coach. Tons of experience and technical knowledge. Great demeanor with positive, insightful feedback.

Michaela is a great coach. Wish we had the opportunity to work with her for a longer period of time.

Michaela is great - my son learned so much in one session! Looking to book several more!

Michaela provided valuable training while transitioning to the glide shotput style. She communicates well and is excellent at breaking things down.

Michaela was great! This was my daughters first last with her and she learned so much! Can’t wait for our next lesson!!

Really helped my son break down shotput throw and give key things to focus on. Very responsive and professional. Looking forward to future sessions

Coach Michaela was a great coach. After one session my daughter said "I learned more in that one session than I did all last season". Looking forward to more coaching sessions!

My daughter enjoyed the first session and is looking forward to the next!

Coach Michaela is awesome! My daughter, 9, watched the Olympics over the summer and fell in love with the long jump. She has no track and field experience, but Coach Michaela has done a wonderful job of meeting her where she is-- at the beginning-- and building her skillset. Coach Michaela is very encouraging, positive, and patient. We feel fortunate to have found her!

Had my first session with Coach Michaela and I can't say enough good things about her. I don't exactly fit into a neat box in terms of my background and goals, but Michaela was able to understand my needs and translate that into a great workout where I learned so much and had a lot of fun. So much to work on and I can't wait for my next workout. I plan to have her design a monthly plan for me, workouts that I will do on my own, and then we will continue to meet every few weeks for form critique or to learn new skills. A little about my background, I compete in the lesser-known sport of dog agility and want to improve my speed. I have competed in the past in swimming, triathlons, long distance running but never had any sprint training. I am middle aged and fit but just don't know how to sprint.

I came to Michaela wanting to improve my fitness and run a faster 5k. I originally thought I could train by myself, but I kept getting injuries and never got any better. Michaela gave me the best customized training plans and helped me through hard workouts. She always has something for me to do, even on days that we don't meet 1-1! My fitness has improved immensely, and I ran a PR in the 5k by 3 minutes and 26 seconds! I feel healthier than ever, and my love for running has returned.
I am a high schooler who was new to the heptathlon when I met Michaela. What was great was that she started with the very basics so I could understand. It was difficult to learn 7 events but Michaela helped me manage everything and always gave me advice for injury prevention so I could stay healthy. I completed my first heptathlon and can't wait for more!
Michaela was my decathlon coach in San Diego. As a 62 year old, I have to be careful with my knees and hips. Michaela helped me keep my joints healthy and came up with creative ways to get better at all ten events without putting too much stress on my joints. We met twice a week for technical work, and she gave me workouts to do on the other days of the week. I am impressed with her knowledge of all ten events in track and field, and I feel like I can trust her with anything.
As a college sophomore, I had no experience with track and field. I had played tennis in high school, but I really wanted to become a Division I sprinter. I worked with Michaela for one summer. She taught me everything, from how to use blocks to how to run the curve and even the most basic sprint mechanics. We met three times per week, and she pushed me through tough workouts that I could never have done on my own. She gave me workouts to do on my own for the other days of the week, which helped me stay fit. Any time I had some pain in my shins or calves, she adjusted the workout so I could still get fit without injuring myself, and she gave me lots of tips for strengthening my shins to keep them healthy! She even helped me figure out what to eat in the mornings before workouts to help me feel better. My 400 time went from 68 seconds in May to 57 seconds in August, and my 200 time went from 28.8 seconds in May to 25.4 seconds in August! When she moved away, she wrote me a custom workout plan so I could keep training until the track and field tryouts in October. And I MADE THE TEAM! Being a Division I athlete has changed my life, and I couldn't have done it without Michaela.
