My training methodology is grounded in the scientific evidence of the human energy systems and functional biomechanics. I have a comprehensive academic and experiential background in kinesiology/biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports medicine, and strength & conditioning. I can therefore address the physiological (speed, power, speed endurance, flexibility, etc.); the biomechanical (technique in relationship to the laws of physics); and injury prevention and/or rehabilitation concerns. I use my education, my experience as an NCAA-D1 high hurdler at Pitt, and my passion for track and field to help athletes develop their maximum potential. As a teacher I try my best to create an environment conducive to maximizing learning and skill development. I coach track primarily because I love the sport, and because of the satisfaction of seeing the success of the athletes I have helped.

I began learning the high hurdles, running the short sprints, high jumping, and long jumping in 1973 while in 8th grade at Antilles Military Academy in Puerto Rico. Five years later I was the most valuable athlete for my high school. Track and Field made an immediate and long lasting impact in my life. After high school I ran the 110 high hurdles, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400m. relay, and decathlon for the University of Puerto Rico, Carolina Campus. After two years I transferred to the University of Pittsburgh to study Physical Education and Athletic Training, and ran the high hurdles for Pitt (81-82). A quadriceps muscle rupture in 1982 marked the end of my track competitive years. I never had any expectations of being a professional athlete, nor was I a standout at Pitt. Not having the physical capabilities of the top national hurdlers forced me to become a true student of the sport, because I knew I had to maximize the potential I had in order to compete for an NCAA D1 quality program at Pitt. There is no ability more critical to coaching than the ability to maximize potential, regardless of how little or great that potential may be. And it takes both scientific knowledge, and "meaningful" practical experience to assist athletes develop their maximum potential.

I individualize based on the athlete's needs, and my approach is comprehensive. I make postural, muscle balance (functional strength and flexibility), range of motion, coordination and biomechanical (movement patterns) assessments on all clients during our first session in order to properly construct each athlete's individualized training program. A typical session consists of:
1. Jog and dynamic warm-up routine (dynamic flexibility and skill drills); 2. Skill/technique work (depends on the athlete's needs in this area); 3. Workout (to address specific physiological needs in relationship to athlete's event); and 4. Cool down and static stretching routine.
Some athletes see me for both technique and conditioning, some only for technique work and complete their conditioning elsewhere (school, club, etc.). I always prefer to work in coordination with an athlete's primary coach, so that I may design sessions that complement the athlete's overall training program and goals.

Great coaching and attention to detail. He spends a lot of time perfecting the basics and teaching the fundamentals, which really helps with getting faster and better. He also writes in-depth, helpful feedback at the end of the session. Excellent coach!!

We met with Jose’ for 1 session and felt very welcomed to participate in track and field coach up program. His evaluation of Ellie was very enlightening from the step by step process to observe what she is doing to basic concepts for improvement. Ellie was very excited for the training and very much looking forward to more training.

Coach Jose is an excellent coach. After just one session, I noticed improvement in my daughter’s speed.

He is very detailed oriented, knowledgeable, and breaks it down easy for a child to understand.

Can’t wait to book more lessons.

Excellent coach! Very personable, patient, and knowledgeable. Running is way more that just running! You need to have the mechanics dialed in to run faster. Coach Jose’ ability to watch what your doing, instantly asses what’s wrong, and provide corrective action is phenomenal. Looking forward to future sessions.

Coach Jose is great! He's an excellent teacher and very detailed. I give him the highest recommendation.

Only 3 sessions and already seeing a hige difference in the way that my son runs

Very understandable

Coach Rivera is great! His extensive knowledge and focus shows with his attention to detail. Also he built a connection with my and myself on the very first session.

Coach Jose worked with my son to improve mechanics, rhythm and training techniques. He brings great energy and positivity to each training session. Grade 10 to Grade 11 time improvements were 0.6s in the 100m. 1.1s in the 200m. My son was able to run at the state meet this year & will continue to train with Jose going into his senior year.

Really patient, really thorough. Excited to train again and have been practicing. Very good coach.

Great session and very informative! Looking forward to the next session!

Our sessions with Coach Jose have all been fantastic. After just two sessions and a handful of drills tailored to specific areas based on an analysis of my daughter's ability, her sprinting form and power have both noticeably improved. Jose is encouraging, professional, and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!

Coach Jose was very professional, knowledgeable, courteous and encouraging. I am relearning my craft as a Master sprinter with great enthusiasm. I am very happy to be working with him and am looking forward to getting back in sprinter shape and bringing home some gold.

Coach Jose has helped improve my daughter’s sprints by leaps and bounds! He breaks down each motion and explains the science and mechanics behind each move. His follow up is extremely timely and thorough. We would highly recommend Coach Jose to anyone that wants to improve their sprints.

Coach José has been a terrific instructor to our 15 year old sprinter. His deep and thorough knowledge of biomechanics is the basis for all the drills he runs our daughter through in their sessions. He takes the time to demonstrate proper form, explain why it is proper form, and help her make the required adjustments. He has a patient and kind approach. In just 4 sessions we see improvement in her balance, coordination, and form. He’s just an all around great guy and we are grateful to work with him. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for individualized track coaching

Very knowledgeable, committed and wonderful with my kids.

Excellent session. Jose is a great teacher.

Coach Jose has been instrumental in teaching Jack the proper training and techniques to hurdle and to help Jack achieve his goal of competing at the college level. Jack has such a better understanding on how to train and what it takes to be successful. We are grateful for Jose’s time and positive energy and will continue to train with him. Jack truly looks to Jose as a mentor.

It was the first time I've been coached in hurdles by someone who is fully knowledgeable and experienced.

Coach Jose is extremely knowledgeable about hurdles. He has some great warm up drills that will help any level of a hurdler. He is able to easily break down a skill and apply it to smaller steps for perfect practice. Great first session.

More knowledge in one hour than a whole lifetime!

Amazing first session. Great knowledge of the mechanics of running.

Simply amazing, honest, knowledgeable, my kids learned a lot in just the few sessions we had.

Very Knowledgeable

Coach Jose did a great job reviewing my running mechanics and helping me become a faster sprinter. He gave very specific things for me to work on between sessions. He was also very flexible with his schedule. I can’t wait to put these tools to use once track meets start again.

Coach Jose is a great man and I really like how he was able to match my pace and gradually help me.

A great coach, overall really knew what he was talking about. Knew exactly what I needed to fix and how to help me fix it!

Great first experience with coach! Very personable and extremely knowledgeable. Looking forward to more sessions!

Coach Jose' taught me more about hurdling mechanics in one hour than I had learned in 3 years of track. He is very patient and thorough. I would highly recommend him.

Coach Jose is the best. He works with me on the details to get them right. I cannot wait for indoor season to start.

Teaches basic techniques to get you to the next level

The first session was very informative... I will be seeking additionl sessions ..

My daughter just had her first session with coach Jose', and she learned so much in that one hour. He is extremely knowledgeable about biomechanics and explained it in a way in which my daughter understood. My daughter is excited that we found someone to teach her to hurdle the CORRECT way!

Coach Jose was such a wonderful coach to work with. He knows what he is talking about and I would definitely recommenced him if you are looking to improve your times.

My son was a natural when it came to hurdles. He knew to keep improving his time he needed to perfect his technic and speed.
I came across Coach Jose’s bio and knew immediately he was the guy for the job.
My son can get frustrated when he doesn’t get something the first try, especially when it is something he already does automatically (like asking someone to walk a different way).
Coach Jose and he work really well together and he see exactly what my son needed and coach tells him the straight facts and doesn’t just say “good job”!
We have continued to train with coach beyond our initial four sessions.
I see great growth already I can’t imagine where this will take him.
Thank you Coach!!!

Excellent!

Coach Jose' has begun working with our daughter who wishes to focus on good hurdling technique. He is very thorough and spends a great deal of time developing skills through many drills she has never seen before and gives a new level of insight. Coach Jose' also focuses on proper technique in order to avoid injuries and strengthen muscles. He is concerned about improved results and shares the latest research and articles with his clients.

I was not too sure about what to expect because it was my first time working with Coach Jose'. This training was for my daughter. Coach Jose' was amazing. I am now looking forward to the summer to really work with Coach Jose'. He is very knowledgeable and has a passion to teach. My daughter really enjoyed working with Coach and I was very very impressed. I highly recommend Coach Jose's for anyone who really wants to improve their skills.

I couldn’t be more impressed with Coach Rivera. He is very knowledgeable; but, more importantly, he conveys that knowledge in a way that my daughter can understand it. His demeanor is ideal for the type of coaching to which my daughter responds well.

Coach Jose' was so knowledgable. He did a great job working with my son and gave him a lot of suggestions. We look forward to working with Coach Jose' in the future. Fantastic!

I took my twelve-year-old daughter to Coach Jose to work on her hurdling technique and could not be happier with the results. He began by examining her strengths and weaknesses and moved on to essentially re-teach her how to hurdle. The results were impressive! She was undefeated in local meets, won the USATF Three Rivers title, won the Youth Outdoor Championships in the Pentathlon and the USATF Region 2 title in the same event. I attribute much of this to Coach Jose. He is patient and kind and works well with younger athletes. He has an unbelievable amount of knowledge about the "little things" that once improved, make a big difference in one's performance. A absolutely awesome coach!

Coach Jose's training has made immediate improvements to my power and efficiency as a sprinter. He quickly identified issues in the efficiency of my sprinting movement. He developed a strength building workout to increase my power and acceleration while also addressing the need for maintaining go tempo and energy. In addition to his verbal feedback, Coach Jose also sends a followup written feedback on how to improve my technique so I can practice the skills and drills between sessions. Coach Jose is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He has a passion for what he does He is easy to talk to and great with communications.

My daughter had a great first workout with Coach Jose. Not only did coach Jose pinpoint some physical weaknesses during the first session, he was also able to put together a program to address those weaknesses while developing a total workout program. We have already scheduled future workouts.

Coach Jose is the purest form of experience and knowledge and expertise in track and field. His personality and intuition into his clients is unbelievable. If your willing to train hard he is an equipped vessel that can take your athlete to the next level.

I was quite pleased with Coach Jose and his approach to my son's training. He diagnosed the issue quickly and thoroughly and set a plan in place to improve my son's sprinting capabilities. I look forward to working with Coach Jose more.

My daughter has only had 4 sessions so far with Coach Jose, but is already showing progress. I love that he works on all the little techniques & mechanics to help her with hurdling. We will definitely be continuing and purchasing additional sessions! I highly recommend Coach Jose! He obviously has a vast amount of knowledge in his field and can clearly help anyone in need of it.

Coach Jose is fantastic! He is extremely patient and focused when working with the athletes. You can tell that he is passionate about what he is doing and wants to bring out the best in each person he works with.

This is the first time I have ever been evaluated for my individual abilities and interests. I now understand my current status and have begun a plan to meet my goals. Coach Jose listened to my experiences and what I want to achieve moving forward.

I would recommend coach Jose highly he is very knowledgeable and passionate and patient. So far we've had a great experience

Coach Jose is definitely a great Coach. From beginners to college level, he treats his athletes with upmost respect and professionalism. I bought sessions for my 9th grade daughter and showed major improvements in just a few sessions. He takes his time and breaks everything down. He definitely knows his stuff.

Totally amazed with his track knowledge. Looking forward to a lot more sessions. Can't wait to watch my daughter grow.

Coach is obviously knowledgeable about his field- particularly the science of sports as it relates to the human body. He gave my daughter important tips after evaluating her. We are very happy with the coach and will continue working with him.

We could not be any happier with Coach Jose Rivera. He takes the time to learn each individual athlete that he trains. He finds exactly what each athlete needs to become better. Coach Jose' is excellent. He understands all the aspects that go into sprinting, starting from the basic mechanics. His background and knowledge in physics translates into teaching sprinting techniques to maximize speed and power. I have learned more about my running style in one session with him than I have in years of running. I look forward to more sessions and recommend him to sprinters of all levels.

Coach José is truly an amazing coach. We've only completed two sessions and the progress we've made is exceptional. I believe he does all in his power to ensure the success of his athletes. His drills and constructive criticism a perfect display of his background knowledge of Track & Field. If I could rate him above five stars, I would. He is consistent, wise, friendly, and understandable. Wish I would've found him sooner!

I started working with Coach José more personally my sophomore year of high school, focusing on sprint and hurdle mechanics. Since working with him, I have developed from a passive runner to an aggressive, more technically sound athlete who can better accelerate through a hurdle race. This set me up to be a highly recruited athlete after my junior year and cap off my high school career on a strong note: I broke 14 seconds and the WPIAL record in the 100m hurdles my senior year and scored huge points in the heptathlon at New Balances Nationals that following summer. This training carried through to my collegiate career where I recorded a Purdue University top-10 time in the 60m hurdles at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in just my freshman year. Coach José is quick to diagnose technical issues and the underlying strength imbalances. Every drill and exercise he prescribes directly address these issues to build a solid foundation for high level performance. He is patient and eager to explain an exercise in different ways so that an individual can better grasp the description. Much of what Coach José says is emphasized by my college coaches. Coach José is an excellent coach overall. It does not matter if you are a novice track athlete or are perfecting your craft after a decade of competition - he will meet you where you are and will take you to the next level. I still work with him as a collegiate athlete during breaks. A better, more passionate track and field technician will be hard to come by.
I began working with Coach Jose' in the fall of my junior year in high school. I was seeking a coach specifically with knowledge and expertise in hurdling and sprint mechanics. I could not have chosen anyone more qualified in training the overall track and field athlete. After one session, I realized that Coach Jose' was able to quickly and accurately identify faults or areas that needed improvement in my hurdling. He shows genuine passion and enthusiasm for each individual athlete at practice, and the focus is entirely on the athlete! The aspect I appreciate most about Coach Jose' is his willingness to communicate with high school coaches to prevent conflicting workouts. The athlete is bound to improve in all aspects of track and field from the skillfulness that Coach Jose' brings to the table. Ayden Owens
I came to know Jose in 2009 when he came onboard our Track & Field staff at Gateway High School. Since that time he has become a good friend primarily due to our shared love of the sport and our enthusiasm for working with kids to help them develop their full potential. I have had several good sprint coaches over the course of 40 years as a head Track coach, but Jose is by far the best I have encountered and I have learned so much from him. He not only understands training and biomechanics, but each year he was able to adapt his program to the talents and needs of the individuals under his tutelage within the parameters of team goals and the limitations of western Pennsylvania weather. The results were astounding. One final note: Jose’s focus as a coach is on what is best for the athletes. He is motivated by his love for the sport and for young people. His athletes sense that and respond to that!
Coach Jose’ is very skilled at what he does. No one knows the mechanics of sprints and hurdles better than him and he is very helpful and flexible with his coaching. His expertise in sprints, hurdles and mid-distance has made me in to an all American decathlete. He wants you to succeed and PR as much as you do if not more. He truly has a love for coaching and for the sport. Most of my track success is on account of his coaching and training advise. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to perfect their track performance. Whether or not you are new to running, he is your best choice.” Noah Swaby, Pittsburgh City League 110 Hurdles Champion; 2016 USATF-Junior Olympics Decathlon Runner-Up.
Jose is not only a former college teammate of mine at the University of Pittsburgh, but a great friend and personal physical therapist. He was very instrumental in helping me rehab before and during the 1992 Olympic Trails in New Orleans. His understanding of the human body and it's limitations has made him one of the best sprint and hurdle coaches in the field today. Sincerely Roger Kingdom Olympic Champ 110 high hurdles 1984 &1988.
