More About Coach David

Hurdles are my jam! I've coached high school hurdlers, XC athletes, collegiate jumpers, and club gymnasts in IL, IA, and CO. I am currently a Physical Education teacher, XC coach, and sprint/hurdle coach at Glenbard West HS in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In my last few years of coaching, I've helped many relays and individual athletes break school records, become conference champions, and qualify to state. All of my hurdlers typically experience continuous improvement throughout the entire season. Recently, one senior even experienced a lifetime best in every single race that he ran. More importantly, my athletes would tell you that they had a blast while training and competing. Positivity is key, and so is treating every workout, training session, and competition as a celebration of life. You won't be able to train and compete forever, so cherish these moments! My students, cross country athletes, and sprint/hurdle athletes all know that I care deeply about their success as student-athletes and their well-being as human beings. Let me show you what a fully invested, experienced, and encouraging coach can do for you!

As an Augustana College track athlete, I was blessed with many school records, numerous conference championships, a national championship, and more. I was also recognized as an 11-time All American, a 3-time Academic All American, and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. These accomplishments also paved the way for recognition as “Athlete of the Meet” at my conference competition, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s “2015 Man of the Year” for all ten sports, and the “2015 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year” for the entire Midwest region of the United States.

In 2016, I also competed post collegiately with professional athletes to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 400m Hurdles. If it had not been for a poorly timed hamstring injury, I am confident that I would have accomplished my goal. In 2020, I set out on a similar goal. However, all competitions (including the Olympic Trials) were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With a baby born in 2021, the level of training needed for the trials was out of the question (family first!) Nonetheless, the journey of traveling and competing all around the country has been incredible.

I focus heavily on hurdle form & technique for all hurdle events. I have many tools for success, including video feedback, hurdle footage, and live demonstration. I actively participate with my athletes throughout each lesson! With these tools, I also improve hurdlers' steps, speed, and endurance. I am happy to differentiate (or problem solve!) for an individual athlete's needs and can cater a session towards his or her specific goals. I am happy to lead athletes through a proper dynamic warm-up, a hurdle lesson, a workout, and a proper cool-down. If an athlete is already comfortable warming up and cooling down on his or her own, I am also happy to focus my energy on hurdle form, technique, steps, or hurdle speed/endurance.

Client Reviews

David is a fantastic coach for my 12 year son. Originally we just signed up to help my son's running form which was hampered by several growth issues. After 2 sessions my son's form improved dramatically and he liked David so much that he expressed an interest in running the hurdles. After one session of hurdles's work, my son is hooked and is now planning to join the track team in the spring. David's background as an elite track athlete and math teacher provides a unique insight to not only training but also how to teach and relate to the kids. One of the best coaches I have ever seen.

Coach Voland is amazing! He is passionate about the hurdles and knows so much about hurdling and running. By the end of my first session, I had improved so much that I could hardly believe it. After every session, I leave with a knowledge of what to work on as well as a noticeable difference in my hurdling form. His style of coaching and knowledge of the sport will help hurdlers of any skill level improve.

Coach David was great!! I learned a lot and can’t wait for my next session

Coach David was fantastic! He definitely helped my athlete improve technique. He also gave my athlete workouts to do at home. I would highly recommend Coach David.

David did a great job customizing his training to my two kids’ individual needs. They left his session feeling more confident with the hurdles and wanting to do more. He also spent time after the session to type up detailed notes to provide additional feedback and instruction. The kids loved his demeanor and are looking forward to future training sessions with him. We would definitely recommend David to others. He knows his stuff and is passionate about his craft!

I have only had Coach Voland for one season, but I've already improved and hit more personal records than any season in the past. He coached a whole team of hurdlers, but he always sat down with each and every one of us one-on-one and talked about what YOU personally needed to do better. I felt and saw that he really cares about what he does. Throughout the season, I realized not only did I have a coach, but also my number one fan. I don't think you can find a coach anywhere who is as dedicated as Coach Voland and loves the art of hurdling so much.
In the span of my first track season, I dropped over 4 seconds in the 110m hurdles all because of coach Voland. He personally attends to everyone’s needs and strives to make every hurdler better. He would take personal time out of his day to analyze videos of us hurdling to give us very specific feedback on our form. Instead of trying to coach everyone the same way, he strives to coach each athlete individually and meet his/her specific hurdling needs. Coach Voland ran track in college so we would get the experience of college level drills and workouts. Even though I wouldn't consider myself a fan of running, I would be so excited to go to hurdles practice after school because no one else could teach so clearly and make it so fun!
