More About Coach W.F.

I have coached athletes that have earned All Scholastic, All American and USATF Grand Prix honors. I have coached at the high school, college and open and masters levels, Swampscott High School, Westfield State University and the Irish-American track club. I am a National Federation of State High School Associations Level 3 Coach,USATF Level 1 certified coach. At Swampscott we were NEC cross country champions at Westfield University we won the Amherst Invitational the Codfish Bowl and MSCAC cross country championship. At the Irish-American track club we won the Bay State Marathon team championship. Over the years I have had many athletes qualify for the Boston Marathon and have had many athletes complete their first marathon. I am proud to say athletes I coach improve.

I was an NCAA Div II All American at 10,000m. I was also the NCAA Div II Northeast Regional Cross Country champion while attending Springfield College. While at Swampscott High School I was a first team All Scholastic in Cross Country and finished 2nd in the MA all state 2 mile and then 4th in the New England 2 mile championship. As an open athlete I was the USATF New England 25k champion and ran 2:19:18 in the Dublin Marathon. I am in the Springfield College and Swampscott High School Athletic Hall of Fame. I was the Northeast Regional Masters champion for 3000m and 5000m as well as a Masters All American at 1500m, mile, 3000m, 5000m and 10k.

An athlete can expect to get a monthly training schedule that will let them know what they should do that day. The athlete will know what we are working on and why. For example on Monday we will be doing pick ups to work on our speed, Tuesday will be an easy recovery day Wednesday we will do a tempo run to improve our speed/endurance Thursday will be another recovery day Friday we will look to improve our speed/strength by running some moderate hills Saturday is a recovery day and Sunday we do a long run to improve our endurance. I am an old school coach who blends quality and mileage (speed and endurance) . Most time is spent running on roads, trails and track, stretching before and after runs, some light core and strength work maybe 5-10 minutes pre and post run, average training session would be approximately 1 hour. If you want to be a better runner: run more and run faster, my job is to make sure not to much to soon or too fast to soon. GET FIT GET FAST

Coach Newhall gives great advice and keeps things simple: aim to enjoy the process and the results will come. He has a ton of experience running, coaching, and giving advice on all sorts of scenarios and questions

Working with coach Newhall was a delight. This was the first time in my adult life giving running a try. He has a world of experience coaching athletes and you can tell. He’ll set realistic goals and expectations that will keep you motivated to reach your goals. With his help I ran my first half marathon and a marathon not long after that. He is very involved and genuinely wants to see you progress. I’d highly recommend him to anyone whether you’re gonna give running a first try or have years under your belt!

Coach W.F. is awesome. Very down-to-earth, encouraging, enthusiastic, but also realistic. If you want to up your game while avoiding overtraining and injury, Coach W.F. will help you get there. Highly recommended!!!

Coach Newhall is committed to helping me lose weight, continue jogging, and improve fitness. This comes through in the way he communicates. I have had personal trainers before who weren’t as thorough and effective. Coach Newhall’s methods of personal training are excellent! He gets five out of five stars with me!

W.F.,thank you for all you are doing. It’s so clear how much you know about the science of what you are doing and the psychology of the kids. Ellie came home feeling super proud and motivated and excited for the next few weeks. She said she loves your teaching style.
