More About Coach Umit

For the last five years, I have been blessed to introduce yoga and its benefits to hundreds of people. My practice balances the spiritual and physical aspects of the practice by using poses as purifying vehicles for cleansing the body’s energy channels.

Helping people find peace and health through yoga is what brings me fulfillment. I feel an innate sense of contentment by compassionately helping people get healthier and getting to know themselves better. It is this passion that has led me to find yoga and dedicate myself to teaching it full time.

That journey started six years ago when I moved to Los Angeles to escape the intensity of New York, but again found myself in a very stressful job. My sister suggested a thing called ‘yoga’. I gave it a few tries, and gradually saw positive changes in myself that led me to practice every day.

As I got deeper, I discovered that yoga opened doors to not just relax but also to a new way of looking at life. It filled a spiritual gap I had been striving to fill for years. Little by little, it grew into the passion to which I dedicate myself.
I believe we all have great potential and skill to better connect with our inner selves and find a higher form of happiness. This requires a little journey into our inner world.
Consider midtown traffic during rush hour and our level of kindness toward others. We feel frustrated, in a rush, self-absorbed, and mildly hostile. Is this who we want to be? Consider this quote from Rumi:
“Love is an emerald. Its brilliant light wards off dragons on this treacherous path.”

Being human is the experience of having an angelic self and an evil self constantly at battle. Our actions are based on the side that dominates our thinking. We all go back and forth and question our actions. Giving even the slightest attention to that angelic self is a step forward – hesitating before cursing at midtown traffic is an example.

What I love about yoga is the endless opportunity to improve and progress through better health and spirituality. The path to true personal development is not through shortcuts but rather being brave enough to see our true selves. When that happens, we can achieve the change we desire. Yoga is a tool for seeing ourselves.

Yoga is an eight-staged self-improvement system. Each class includes combination of various steps depending on what wants to be accomplished. Some of the limbs we will have in the class are: Asanas (Poses), Yamas (Moral discipline) and Niyamas (Observances) , Bioenergy Techniques, Pranayama (Breathing Techniques), Concentration, Meditation and Deep Relaxation.

The breathing techniques in Yoga help participants to relieve stress and revitalize the system, while body techniques help to remove physical discomfort and fatigue. Relaxation techniques also help to relieve stress and provide individuals with a tool for better and more effective time management in their daily life. When breath synchronicity and awareness are combined, the capacity for focusing the mind increases. Mental tension, stress, and depression are prevented. In this respect, the nature of the postures is not only physical but also mental. If applied correctly, they will relax the mind, balance, and regulate the autonomic nervous system, endocrine functions, and activity of the internal organs creating optimal health and well-being. Additionally, when the body, mind and emotions filled with positive energy by means of techniques, the individual is naturally freed of negative desires, thoughts and actions.

Outstanding!! I'm very new to yoga and Umit very patiently and graciously led a wonderful introductory session. I found him kind, attentive, and a highly knowledgeable teacher. Coach Umit is a wonderful teacher. Wise, attentive, inspiring, enthusiastic and insightful. He throws in just the right amount of challenge to keep things interesting and progressing. Each session is different and tailored to the individuals in the group. Umit has also helped accelerate my recovery from two athletic injuries: adapting poses to account for injury but also working on improving strength and flexibility as things heal up. Umit is an excellent yoga teacher. I'm grateful to him for his wisdom and support. One thing I love is he tailors the program to what your body can and can't do. He pushes you some, but not too much. Umit is also great about giving you simple stretches you can do on your own in between sessions to improve your flexibility. I've been lucky to have Ümit as my yoga instructor for over a year now, on a mostly-weekly basis. I'm really amazed at how much I've improved with his guidance and thoughtful teaching. His style is a perfect balance for me, combining work on breath technique, strength, balance, and flexibility. He is very observant of my strengths and weaknesses, and knows where to help me focus the work; he also knows the limits of my body and adapts the practice accordingly. I’m going to make this short and sweet. I was suffering from shoulder injury , bad posture and stress before taking private classes with Umit. Guess what !! I don’t have any of it right now after taking regular classes with him. He is the best yoga instructor I have ever met. Omg I loved taking Umit's Yoga class. Umit's classes are well thought out, clearly delivered, dynamic and interesting. His ability to connect with the yoga lovers is whole and instinctual, making his teaching that much more potent and alive. When I do yoga I always had problem with my breathing. I want to focus to get in the position and the breathing as a naturally together. The first time in yoga class I did not have any problem with breathing while doing yoga because of his teaching strategy. This is a great class for any level. It was really gentle yet at the end I felt I have worked every muscle in my body. It was a stressful day for me, and this class did it for me. He made me breathe! I stretched really well with postures I have never seen before! . I like the fact that breathing techniques and meditation was part of it. This class is the best kept secret in Manhattan. I would love him to add more hours so I can make it my daily routine.
