My philosophy is based in the belief that an athlete will get more out of training by correcting dysfunctional biomechanics than they would if they simply aimed to gain endurance or strength without considering the way they move.

The first part of my sessions aim to mitigate previously identified postural/mechanical dysfunctions through corrective exercises. The corrective exercises are based in principles taught by The Postural Restoration Institute and the Functional Patterns Methodology. This can be considered the “warm up.”

Once corrective exercises are complete, we move to the technical portion of the session. We will work on event specific drills, keeping in mind the concepts we reinforcing during the corrective exercises portion.

After the technical part of the session we will work on enhancing fitness and/or specific strength. The intensity of this portion of the session will depend on the intensity of the technical portion. We will do less if the technical portion was high intensity and more if it was light intensity. The themes we touch on in this portion are 1) sprint capacity, 2) top speed, 3) rhythm, and 4) power development. Themes 1 and 2 typically include different types of sprint workouts. Themes 3 and 4 contain a mix of sprint, jumping, and bounding drills.

For context, this is also how I train myself. I left my corporate job in June of 2018 to train in the Long Jump again and to change courses in my career.
