More About Coach Monica
As a volunteer coach in summer track programs, I coached young athletes, primarily in the high jump and javelin. Although high jump is my area of expertise, I am able to coach all events included in the heptathlon (sprints to mid-distance, hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump, javelin). Additionally, I hold a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and have trained using various functional movement modalities, coaching small groups of adult movers.
As a college heptathlete competing at the Division II level at Angelo State University, I earned a Lone Star Conference championship title for points scored in the high jump, 800 m, and heptathlon. My personal record for high jump and 800 m is 5'7" and 2:18, respectively.
A typical session begins with a general warm-up and mobility, followed by event-specific drills. For example, a high jump session would begin with bridges and back arches on the mat. Moving off the mat, we then begin short runs to a scissor jump, focusing on knee drive and maintaining vertical clearance. Moving on to a full run, athletes will begin at their level of proficiency, focusing on the section of the run and jump needed for the day. Depending on athlete needs, event-specific conditioning is the last phase of the training session, followed by adequate recovery and additional mobility work. This structure is applied to other events, with all sessions focusing on personalized and event-specific training.
