More About Coach Mike

I have been helping adults learn to swim and triathletes improve their freestyle since 2005. I coach with Liquid Lifestyles® and have conducted weekend workshops coast-to-coast and have helped thousands of athletes reach their goals. I offer private lessons, semi-private lessons, a 5-week Freestyle Fundamentals class, a 5-week Advanced Freestyle Class, 1-Day Freestyle Clinics, Open Water Clinics (Seasonally), Underwater Video Analysis and am one of the on deck coaches for the Liquid N' Durance Masters training group.

I did not swim in high school or college. I did my first triathlon in 1991 and the swim nearly killed me and I was one of the last people out of the water. After that experience, I swore I would never do another triathlon again. And I didn't for 9 years. In 2000, I got talked into doing my 2nd triathlon. My swim hadn't improved much but I did get bit by the triathlon bug. Over the next two to three years I kept hacking at the swim and slowly moved my way up to becoming a a very average swimmer, coming out of the water in the middle of the pack. In 2003, I received formal swim instruction from Liquid Lifestyles, and my swimming dramatically improved that next season. I went from being in the middle to being in the top 25%. My coach started to ask me to assist her at weekend workshops and to demonstrate drills to clients. It grew from there and eventually I started offering private lessons, and then ran our LND Master's program and teaching classes and clinics. Swim instruction with Liquid Lifestyles is now my full time career.

I have completed more that 75 triathlons of every distance from Sprint to Ironman®. Some of my favorite events have been HFP Great Buckeye Challenge, American Triple T, Rev3 Cedar Point 140.6, Chicago Triathlon, Escape from Alcatraz, Ironman Muskoka 140.6, Ironman Ohio 70.3, and Musselman 70.3. I am currently training for American Triple T and Ironman Lake Placid 70.3.

I craft unique, personalized, swimming lessons that are custom designed specifically for YOU! With hands-on instruction and proven training techniques, I can help you to drastically improve your swimming. Each lesson focuses on developing competency in a specific skill in the overall skill progression: balance, length, rotation, timing, breathing, kicking, catch/pull, etc. The pace of lesson progress is based upon your ability to master these skills, not on a predetermined time line. I will provide you with focal points and skill based drills for you to practice between lessons, clearly define performance expectations, and provide continual reassurance and guidance along the way. I have the technical experience to train elite athletes as well as the patience and dedication to teach anxious beginners. So no matter what your needs and goals are, I will provide you with practical solutions for improvement that will have you swimming the way you’ve always dreamed!

Client Reviews

Mike was great. He clicked right away with my son and improved his swimming in one lesson.

was referred to Liquid Lifestyles by a friend of mine at the gym. I am a west sider and met up with Liquid Lifestyles coach Mike Cousino. I was a very inexperienced swimmer when I met Mike. I did not care for the water, chlorinated or lake, but I wanted to attempt a triathlon. My first lesson, we started with drills. Mike said NO swimming, just drills. I was thrilled. NO SWIMMING! Perfect! This is MY kind of guy! Over time those drills paid off and I could not wait to put all those drills together to actually SWIM! I’m a terribly impatient person, I don’t take direction very well and I like to be in charge. But Mike is very patient and has a gift—the ability to make a verbal connection and visualization while teaching a skill Mike made something that was very difficult for me seem easy by “building a foundation” very, very slowly. Mike’s teaching style was supportive and enthusiastic.
