More About Coach Michael

I have coached and trained all levels of swimmers from 12 mos. to 95, m/f, from water safe, beginner to national and Olympic level. I have taught swimming to literally thousands of children from 3-12. I have been the head coach of an age group team (4-18) of 300+ swimmers. I have had swimmers (9-10, 11-12 boys, and 11-12, 13-14 girls) at national level. Several later achieved NCAA rankings, with one boy in the Olympics. Certified ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) levels 1-4, USMS (US Masters Swimming) levels 1-3 and Red Cross. I train the trainers, too. In addition, I provide strength and conditioning programs to complement swimming and compete. Swimmers receive my technical tutorials on the four strokes, starts and turns and dryland exercise. I have coached water polo, weight training, fitness, gymnastics, and dance.

I started age group swimming at 9, then moved to club, achieving high school city finals (records in IM, butterfly and medley relay) and college. 4-year varsity letterman water polo at Occidental College. Currently, compete in USMS, placing at nationals. Excelled at strength and conditioning, power lifting 1180 lbs in the 148 lb. category. I played rugby for 7 years.

Motivation and Improvement. Maximizing efficiency and effectiveness. Understand the client's level of competence, goals and expectations. Establish a training program to achieve the swimmer's objectives. Progressive curriculum for every swimmer built upon water awareness and safety, swimming basics, four core swimming strokes and “race day readiness”. Swim sessions are focused on techniques in all areas and strokes requiring improvement - from breathing, to arm strokes, timing, starts, turns, finishes, dives, etc. If training is on swim team and/or weight room, then a seasonal and annual workout program is established with targets and an overall objective set.
Workouts consist of warm-up, working on the known, then learning new actions, movements, etc. practicing them, incorporating them with the previous known, and then a bit of racing and fun. Sessions include developing life skills with positive attitudes and setting goals for each activity - beyond just "the time".
I offer written tutorials with photos, videos, and commentary on all four strokes; starts and turns and dryland workouts. I seek to provide clear, understandable instruction matched to each swimmer’s ability level.

Great coach! Patient and informative

Coach Michael is great. He did a great job getting back to the basics and building a foundation to improve upon. He is very patient and is willing to spend extra time to reinforce what was taught.

I’ve been swimming my whole life. My goal is to improve my freestyle technique and to get faster. After just one swim session with Michael, I improved so much I can’t wait for my next session! Michael is fun to work with and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend him!

My wife and I could not have chosen a better coach for our 10 year old boy. Coach Michael is very patient and understanding. He is also great at simplifying complex instructions in a way that my 10 year old can easily understand and apply.

Very knowledgeable, passionate, and professional. I highly recommend coach Michael.

Professional trainer.

Coach Michael is terrific. He’s coached my 11 year old boy who knew the fundamental strokes and seems to have some natural swimming proclivity but had virtually no technique whatsoever. My goal in hiring Coach Michael was to get the boy to sufficient form that he could take this sport anyway he wanted (joining a swim team, going the water polo route, whatever he chooses). I couldn’t have chosen a better coach. And, I believe that’s the case because you couldn’t find a more experienced coach out there. But none of that would matter if Coach Michael wasnt extremely friendly and personable, which he is. More than anything though, Michael clearly loves to teach. He enjoys not only talking about swimming but sends his students swimming videos to watch and a journal to keep.

Michael is congenial and a clear, effective communicator. His advice is broken into portions so that you can focus on one problem per drill. He gives accurate, appropriate and detailed technical guidance that immediately fixed two problems with my stroke. My distance per stroke went up 1-2 ft in one lesson.

Private Swim Lessons: 5 gold stars We had a large group of two adults and three children. Michael was very patient with each of them, and was very encouraging in his training. Some in our group were so nervous they couldn't even eat, let alone get in the water. After a few sessions, Michael has them jumping into the deep end of the pool. He certainly has more advanced experience to take the training to higher levels, and we appreciated his patience in getting our group of non-swimmers into the water with basic stroke training. This customer rated you highly for professionalism, responsiveness, and work quality.
Michael has a very patient and effective teaching style. My son looks forward to each lesson and the sense of accomplishment he gains. My wife and I have been pleased and impressed by the consistent progress. Overall Michael is a very experienced coach whose professionalism is second to none. I recommend without any reservation.
Within a few lessons, Michael helped me drop almost 30 seconds in my 200 breaststroke. I was ecstatic and amazed. He is really good.
Great!!
Michael has a good eye and can instantly see what is wrong with your stroke and suggest the best solution to become more efficient. I have improved my stroke technique and my times. He has vast knowledge and solid experience from which to draw upon. In addition, he is personable and easy to work with.
