More About Coach Matthew

Welcome to my page! Let me begin by stating the obvious: searching for the right coach to match your needs can be an overwhelming and confusing process as you learn what type of services you’re looking for. Whether you are an avid athlete or looking to complete your first running event, you can count on my services.

I’m passionate about creating individualized training tailored to each person’s needs. I have extensive knowledge of creating various training programs based on insights and practical knowledge about fitness, training methods, and racing strategies, all of which tie into your fitness and health goals. Through my individualized training plans, I work diligently to create unique experiences for clients at any training level and event focus.

As we prepare you for your goal event, we will conduct routine check-ins to discuss your adjustment to training, which allows me to coach you effectively. Training will not be set in stone and can be adjusted based on various factors, such as your overall progress, whether you're ready to kick it up a notch, or if we need to dial it back due to unforeseeable circumstances like sickness, injury, or personal and professional setbacks. My goal is to help you reach your goal and develop your passion for running by being the best running version of yourself.

I believe that adopting a growth mindset allows us to transcend our existing capabilities and reject the conventional boundaries of performance. To elevate your running journey, you'll face some demanding workouts. A key aspect of overcoming these challenges is to perceive your training as a continuous journey with its ups and downs.
“There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them” - Bruce Lee

My goal is to train everyone with an emphasis on health, fitness, and injury prevention so that people can approach competition in terrific shape, ready to compete with confidence, and reflect the best version of themselves.

Coaching Philosophy:
I begin by observing and analyzing areas for improvement in an athlete, and I assign training to work on enhancing areas that will ultimately lead to accomplishing goals. I believe in working with athletes on their weaknesses to improve their strengths. My training programs are carefully designed and methodical, using the latest training theory and backed by scientific research with the goal of long-term development.

First, I take the time getting to know the person by learning inherent abilities, experience level as an athlete in general, their event specialty (sprints, throws, jumps, mid-distance, and long distance), and helping to establish goals and expectations for each other. Training styles vary among each individual and not all athletes will be trained the same way.

Sample training session (up to 2 hours in duration)

Warmup - 10-15 min
Active Isolated Stretches - 5-10 min
Dynamic Drills - 5-10 min
Strides: 5-7 minutes (depending on event specialty)
Workout session - 20-60 min (depending on event specialty)
Strength - 20-45 min (depending on event specialty)
Light Stretching - 10-15 min
Cooldown - 10-15 min
Debriefing - 5 minutes

Focuses in each item within a typical session:

Warmups: prepping the body to take on the workout for the day.

Active Isolated Stretches: adding movement to stretches where the individual holds a stretch for 1-3 seconds. Typically performed while walking up to 20 meters.

Dynamic Drills: enhances running form through focused repetitive movements, and builds general agility and speed.

Strides: enables the individual to get a feel of race pace and how to adjust their pacing to meet the pacing demands of a workout.

Workout: this solely is dependent on the individual’s ability, event specialty, where the individual is presently in their training, etc.

Strength: typical in-session strength exercising methods include calisthenics, kettlebell, medicine ball, agility.

Light Stretching: normally consists of light yoga type stretched and static stretching.

Cooldown: normally easy running/ walking around to flush the body’s system of by-products due to lactate accumulation.

Debriefing: time spent with the individual to discuss how they felt about the workout they completed, and to cover any questions related to exercising.

Client Reviews

Awesome experience so far and the training program seems to be working! Five weeks away from the NYC Marathon and my far-reaching goal of breaking 3:30 is starting to look... doable on a good day, which is more than I could ask for. Thank you!

Coach Matt is great! He tailors each workout for my son based on the goals my son has set. He is enthusiastic and encouraging which has helped my son strive to meet his goals. My son has been training for a little over a month and he already sees improvement and has such an increased sense of optimism for the upcoming cross country season.

Matt has been great. He responds to my messages in a timely manner and he makes sure he answers all my questions when we meet in person. I havent worked with him for long but so far I am already seeing improvements. Would recommend. Thanks Matt!

I've loved working with Coach Matthew so far! He's very responsive and willing to dive into the details to answer my questions. He's helped me to better understand different workouts and how to evaluate whether I'm pushing too hard during them. I'm also seeing definite improvements in my fitness based on my time trials.

Great trainer. Great person. Highly recommended.

Working with Coach Lowe for the past couple years has been the reason I’ve been able to grow in the sport of running. As someone who had never stepped foot on a track, or really knew much about the running world, Coach Lowe has gotten me to a place I would’ve never thought possible when I started running. Through personalized training, effective communication, and the willingness to put the athlete first, Coach Lowe has taken my running into a new realm, including helping me qualify to Boston on my first attempt, and then go on to run a PR at Boston some time later. If you’re looking for a coach that truly takes an athlete-centric approach combined with using his expansive running expertise to prescribe what he thinks is best for that specific person, then look no further than Coach Lowe!
