More About Coach Mason
I have worked with athletes across multiple levels, including collegiate, high school, middle school, and elementary players. Whether it’s helping high school athletes prepare for college recruitment or introducing younger players to the fundamentals of football, I have the experience to guide players through every stage of their athletic journey. I specialize in position-specific training for Defensive Backs, Wide Receivers, Return Specialist, and Running Backs.
I had the privilege of competing at both the collegiate and professional levels of football, with my most notable accomplishments coming from my time at the Colorado School of Mines and as a starting defensive back for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Collegiate Accomplishments (Colorado School of Mines):
As a 4-year starter and 2-time All-American at the Colorado School of Mines, I was recognized for my performance as a cornerback (CB) and punt returner (PR).
I earned numerous awards throughout my college career, including:
- 2nd Team CCA All-American CB (2022)
- 2nd Team AP All-American CB (2022)
- Honorable Mention Don Hansen All-American CB (2021, 2022)
- 1st Team All-Region 4 CB (2021, 2022)
- 1st Team All-Colorado CB (2021, 2022)
- 3x All-RMAC CB (2019, 2021, 2022)
- 2x All-RMAC Punt Returner (2021, 2022)
- Record Holder - Passes Defended (PBU & INT)
- Record Holder: Average Punt Return Yardage in a Season (2021)
- Record Holder: Career Punt Return Yardage
- Newcomer of the Year (2018)
Professional Accomplishments (Toronto Argonauts - CFL):
After college, I continued my career with the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL, where I served as a starting defensive back for two seasons.
I was recognized as one of the Top 5 CFL Rookies in my first year and earned multiple accolades, including, October 2023 Player of the Month, 4x Defensive Back of the Week, and played a pivotal role in the Argonauts' defense, showcasing my leadership and consistency at the professional level.
In a typical session, clients can expect a personalized, position-specific approach designed to improve fundamental skills, boost confidence, and enhance overall performance. Whether you’re an elementary school player just learning the game or a college athlete aiming to refine advanced techniques, I adjust the intensity and focus of each session to fit the athlete's age and skill level.
Warm-Up:
Each session starts with a dynamic warm-up to get the body ready for training. This includes stretching, light jogging, and movement drills that focus on footwork, agility, and balance — key components for every position on the field.
Skill-Specific Drills:
Depending on the athlete’s position, we’ll focus on drills that develop the core skills needed for success:
Cornerbacks (CB): I’ll focus on footwork drills, hip flexibility, backpedaling, and reaction drills to improve change-of-direction speed and ball tracking.
Wide Receivers (WR): We’ll work on route running, catching drills, hand-eye coordination, and separation techniques.
Running Backs (RB): Expect drills that improve ball handling, vision, cutting, and agility to make quick, sharp decisions under pressure.
Punt Returners (PR): I’ll focus on catching techniques, fielding punts under pressure, and improving return vision and decision-making.
Position-Specific Technique Focus:
After the basic drills, I’ll guide athletes through advanced techniques tailored to their position. For example, for CBs, we may work on press coverage or reading the quarterback, while for WRs, we’ll dive into techniques for high-pointing the ball or creating separation on routes.
Conditioning & Mental Focus:
No session is complete without conditioning drills designed to improve stamina and speed. I emphasize mental focus, teaching athletes how to stay composed under pressure, which is key for game-day performance. Athletes learn how to stay confident, react quickly, and visualize success.
Cooldown & Reflection:
We’ll finish with a cooldown, including light stretching and reflection on what went well in the session. I always leave room for feedback so athletes know exactly where to focus their efforts going forward.
Whether you're just starting out or aiming to compete at the next level, you can expect every session to be challenging, informative, and fun. I focus on teaching athletes the fundamental skills they need to succeed while also helping them develop the mental toughness and strategy required at every level of the game.
