More About Coach Kate

I’ve been coaching since spring of 2018, when I became certified by the RRCA as a distance running coach. Since then, I’ve coached both individuals – in-person and online – and groups. I coach with an eye on the entire package – running fitness as the primary focus, but I spend time with many of my clients discussing and working on other areas: nutrition, stress management, etc. I have coached athletes at all levels of ability - from beginning intervals-based runner to athletes returning from injury to runners seeking serious PR's. I work with both kids and adults, but the adults I work with tend to be older than 30 - people who recognize that running is one part of a healthy lifestyle they must commit to.

I am also a Certified Nutrition Coach (NASM) and will be taking my exam for the Certified Sports Nutrition Coach later this month (also NASM). My Master's degree is in Exercise, Fitness, & Health Promotion - earned in 2019 from George Mason University.

I have coached online with Team RunRun since the spring of 2020, and my roster size has consistently been between 20 and 30 clients. In terms of group coaching, I have coached a local running & strength-work group since 2019 - mostly neighborhood moms who are looking for motivation and accountability. I also coached briefly at a local treadmill-based running studio, Formula Running Center - FRC unfortunately closed due to financial strains of the pandemic. In addition, I served as Director of Training Programs for the DC Road Runners Club. Finally, I have coordinated the local series of the national nonprofit, Healthy Kids Running Series, since 2018.

At the beginning of 2022, I turned my coaching into an official business, Flash Fit (formerly Flash Running Wild Fitness & Nutrition Coaching, and this year launched the offshoot Wild Wellness Retreats. As part of Flash Fit, I also created a kids running club, Arlington Kids Run!

I have been running since elementary school. In high school, I ran track - primarily the 4x800, the mile, and the 2-mile. While I opted not to pursue collegiate running, I have continued to run daily as an adult. Before I had kids, I did fairly well as an amateur athlete, winning several races (Garden Spot Marathon in PA and Gobbler Grind in KS). My marathon PR is 3:10 (Marine Corps Marathon), and I placed 2nd in the Marine Corps Historic Half with my half-marathon PR of 1:24.

There is no typical session with me, as I tailor my approach wholly to the client - their goals, their running history, their current fitness level, etc. That said, if I am working with a client in-person, I will typically start with a basic gait analysis and discussion of proper form. We will often go through some running drills - strides, alternating tempos, etc. - and we may go over basic strength training moves, dynamic stretches, and mobility drills to incorporate into a routine.

If coaching online, every client has a very unique, tailored schedule. I assign both a variety of running-based workouts (each week varies) and basic strength progressions. I pride myself on being flexible, responsive, and motivating.
