More About Coach Joe

Nationally Certified Level II Endurance Running Coach - 5K to Marathon distances. Beginners to advanced athletes. Reduce overuse injuries, become more efficient, improve results, enjoy running more.

Former professional Alpine skier, including ski coach, avid sport enthusiast (running, skiing, golf, tennis, rock climbing, trekking, etc.).

I have learned that people who are very good at a sport but inexperienced as coaches may not possess the qualities and the knowledge necessary to be a good coach for others.

Coaching is about having a thorough understanding of running mechanics, effective training principles AND the ability to communicate and motivate in ways which make the most sense to an individual, and knowing when to offer support and when to offer a kick in the butt.

We start with a discussion/assessment of current physical condition, any limiting factors, and intermediate and long term goals. From there we continue with a review of current technique and discuss drills and workouts to ingrain any beneficial changes, if required, to reduce injury potential and improve efficiency. We then work on establishing more detailed intermediate and long term goals and begin an individualized training plan which had been created to achieve those goals. I then monitor and guide the training either in person or on-line, via video analysis, in-person demonstration and/or technique videos and several other available technologies which provide a much deeper insight into important indicators of progress.

I am available in-person for clients who are located in: central/northern AZ (centered on Sedona, AZ) and via: phone, email/chat/blog and on-line technologies (sports watches, instrumented foot-beds, heart rate monitors, heart rate variability monitoring, running power measurement and monitors, video, etc.) to clients around the US and other select countries around the world.

A rapidly growing number of clients around the country work with me via on-line coaching since our tools, including video analysis and run data analysis, allow a deep level of very effective coaching remotely.

I also offer semi-private coaching to groups of 4 or more similarly experienced athletes in order to provide coaching at a reduced rate if/when private coaching isn't required/desired.

I first met Joe while working in a restaurant that he frequented regularly. We began to talk when I discovered that he was an avid hiker as my husband and I also loved hiking. Joe was the race director of the New Jersey Marathon at that time. I always liked running, I would run two or three miles but had never run in any kind of race. It was around this time that I received the news that a very close friend of mine had been killed in a car accident. My friend was a runner and I was thinking about attempting to run a half marathon as a tribute to my friend. When I mentioned this to Joe he offered to coach me and encouraged me to take on this challenge. At this time, the idea of running thirteen miles seemed like an impossible goal. A friend of mine offered to join me and together we started to train. Joe provided us with a training schedule and a world of information that I have carried with me through every race I've since run. Everything from what to wear, what to eat (or not eat), choosing running shoes, stretching. The list could go on and on. We dedicated ourselves to our training and finished our first half marathon. I have gone on to run 6 half marathons and 4 full marathons, including the New York Marathon for St Jude Children's Hospital and will be running for St Jude again this April in Nashville. I tell Joe he's the guy who changed my life.
