More About Coach Jennifer
My yoga journey started many moons ago when my Mom suggested my sister and I take a class. I don't remember much about the class itself, but I do recall speaking enthusiastically about it afterward. I also remember the smell of the satsuma oil that was burned throughout the class, and the various intrigues of my teacher that day, who wore endless strings of beads around her neck and had glittery, bright eyes and really wild curly hair. Most memorably, I felt calm. I was used to feeling like my mind was running in a million different directions, but for the rest of that day I felt immensely focused, present and peaceful.
Though I was intrigued, yoga didn't become a regular part of my life until I started taking classes with the wonderful Scott Campbell at UNC-Chapel Hill (thank you Scott!). Scott's classes taught me that any body can do yoga, and I now specialize in helping people find the best way of practicing for their bodies. Since moving to New York City in 2010, I've taken classes in Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Power Vinyasa, Kundalini, Restorative, Bikram, Strala, Chakra, Iyengar, Yin, and Jivamukti yoga with many different teachers at many different studios. In 2015 I took the next step in my yoga journey by completing my 200-hour Yoga Alliance teaching certification at The Giving Tree Yoga Studio in Astoria, Queens.
As a lifelong athlete, I understand how intimidating it can be to walk into a yoga class. I also know firsthand the tremendous benefits the athletic body can glean from a regular yoga practice when it's done safely. My goal as a teacher is to create an environment where anyone can feel good about practicing regardless of their level of strength or flexibility. The great thing about yoga is that there is always a new pose to master, a deeper level of awareness to cultivate. Yoga is meant to ease and empower, not frustrate and intimidate.
I come from an athletic background. Running, swimming, dancing, gymnastics, team sports--you name it! I was fortunate to find in yoga a counterpoint to these activities, something to lengthen and stretch my otherwise tight muscles as well as cultivate peace of mind. I had been practicing yoga for more than 10 years before undertaking teacher training.
I am incredibly proud to be a graduate of The Giving Tree Yoga Studio's Chakra Yoga 200-hour teaching certification program. There is a great deal of variation amongst yoga certification programs. I chose to train at The Giving Tree because it was the most comprehensive program I could find, combining focus on alignment in the asanas with anatomy, yogic philosophy, and the chakras. In addition to completing 200 hours of formal instruction, I read 7 major yogic texts and took more than 60 hours of yoga class, including classes I observed and assisted with. I also gained experience leading meditation, chanting, and breathing exercises.
The Giving Tree's philosophy is to cultivate the unique teacher within. My classmates and I did not learn how to teach a handful of specific sequences; we learned how to be present with our students and instruct accordingly. In the same way, my philosophy is to cultivate a unique practice with each person. My goal is to help you discover your own approach to yoga so that you can continue building your practice safely, trusting your intuition to guide you. I encourage you to start each practice anew without expectation, meeting the body in the present moment. We are often taught to extend compassion out to others, but how often are we encouraged to extend that same compassion to ourselves? Meeting the body where it's at is a good place to start.
Since graduating I have taught a variety of community and private classes, including my teacher Anne-Margaret Redding's own program Total Trainingâ„¢, which combines elements of mantra, yoga and personal training for a full body and mind experience. I have taught beginners and advanced yogis, pregnant women and yogis working with injuries. In addition to teaching yoga and meditation, I am a student myself, working towards my masters in social work.
FAQ:
I can't touch my toes. Can I do yoga?
Yes, you absolutely can! Yoga is a practice. If you find yourself being challenged, you are in good company (they don't call them "warriors" for nothing). Together we will work on building the poses in a way that makes sense for you. The asanas or physical postures are but one of eight branches of yoga. These will be our focus, but in the traditional sense of the word simply breathing mindfully is the "yoga."
Will I get a workout?
I'm tempted to say, "Always," but in truth much of this is up to you. I teach students with a variety of goals. Getting an intense workout is very important for some, while others are primarily interested in building their focus or getting some much needed rest and relaxation. Most want a bit of each. It's worth noting that yoga poses are built on both voluntary and involuntary engagements. The more you learn about alignment, the more you will be able to activate the voluntary muscles that will bring your practice to the next level.
Where will we practice?
I bring the practice to you. Please kindly note that for locations requiring travel beyond 45 minutes and/or inaccessible by public transit, an additional fee will be assessed.
What will we do?
I design each session according to your individual needs and goals; no two are the same. My passion for all things yoga drives me to continue learning and adding to my toolbox in order to best serve you. All sessions will include elements of pranayama, asana practice, and mindfulness. Pranayama is breath work, and together with asana practice, it is the key to cultivating mindfulness. By bringing awareness of the breath to physical postures, we invite ourselves to maintain a deep and steady breath through moments of challenge and change. This "pause" before the reaction, this curious attention to the body, the breath, and the mind is at the heart of mindfulness. Whether you're trying to make a lifestyle change, go to the next level professionally or simply sleep better at night, mindfulness is an invaluable tool.
What is your cancellation policy?
Sessions must be canceled 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged the full session fee.

Jennifer was an amazing instructor. My 1st time doing Yoga and she was so patient with me it was so comforting to not feel like I was being rushed or like I was being judged for not knowing what to do in the beginning.
By the end of the session my breathing improved and I was feeling so much better throughout my body.
I would recommend anyone to Jennifer.

Jennifer has by far exceeded my expectations in a Yoga coach. She arrived early, has an excellent disposition, positive attitude and is more than willing to work with me on every level of my work out and overall experience. A few years back I had a private yoga instructor that was wonderful and I was concerned about using someone new. As stated before Jennifer by FAR exceeded my expectations and I immediately booked more sessions with her. I have a tight schedule that changes and she has accommodated me without exception. I explained my goals in terms of relaxation and centering my mind but also toning and firming my body. After just the first session I felt my muscles responding in the areas I wanted to work on yet the workout felt peaceful and the perfect level of challenging I had asked for. I look forward to working with Jennifer more in the future, it has been an absolute pleasure thus far.

Coach Jennifer ! : Very outstanding character. IF there was more room to put more than 5 stars, certainly would rate more without any hesitation. Highly recommendation coach Jennifer to anyone.

Jennifer, was amazing!!! Before the session we comunicated about what i was looking for and the fact that i recently ripped my meniscus. Jennifer took the time to do a lot of reasearch before the session to see what poses could hurt me and which would help me. Throughout the session she was very motivational and throughly explained how to properly preform each pose and help correct me if i was not doing it correct.
I would highly recommend jennifer to any one looking to get into yoga or improve there yoga practice

My first session with Jennifer was really great! I felt like she really listened to what I was looking to get out of yoga, and she tailored our session to my needs. I was looking for help with relaxation and stress release, as well as for improvement of my posture and alleviation of some stress-related upper back pain, and she really provided exercises, stretches, and meditations that were tailored to that. She also really worked with my skill level, which I appreciated, because I am such a beginner, so I was really glad that she kept things simple for our first coaching session. I also really liked how she incorporated mantras and stress-reduction techniques into the exercises, not just during the meditations at the beginning and end. I also liked how she explained lots of the philosophy of yoga and the benefits of each exercise and stretch while we were doing them. I enjoyed getting the education that she provided, and it was also very soothing the way she narrated what we were doing -- and it kept me from getting bored during the exercises. I finished the session feeling much more relaxed and de-stressed, which is exactly what I was hoping for!
