More About Coach Garth
Lifetime Coach and Educator, Currently Linebacker Coach at Chaparral High School in Temecula Ca. Former Defensive Coordinator (20 years), Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (25 years), High School Athletic Director (7 years). Head Varsity Football Coach (2 years), Head Varsity Baseball Coach (1 Year). I have also coached Track and Wrestling on and off over my career.
I played at RCC, after serving my country for six years in the U.S. Navy. I began coaching after injuries ended my career. I began coaching at Canyon Spring High School where I we won the CIF title. I then moved to Vista High School where we were 3 time back to back to back CIF champions. I then pursued my teaching career and served as Strength and conditioning coach at Rowland, and Jurupa Valley high schools. I then was named head football Coach at Banning High School. After that I moved to Valley View High School for 14 years. During this time I served as the Defensive Coordinator and Athletic Director and also was the head baseball coach for a year. In 2013 I began coaching at Great Oak High School in Temecula California, where I was the strength coach and also served as DC. In 2020 I moved to Chaparral as the Linebacker Coach where I currently coach.
I have been fortunate to have coached over 100 players that have gone on to play sports after high school. I was also blessed to have coached 8 players that have gone on to play in the NFL. Current player is Brennan Jackson of Great Oak, currently with the L.A. Rams.
I offer 4 different training sessions. I Position Specific, II Speed and Agility Training, III Strength Power Training, and IV Academic Tutoring. Each last 1 hour. You may combine sessions based on my availability. Each session begins with a 5-10 minute warmup/activation session. I run all sessions just like I train my players in practice. I focus on technique and coach every kid on every rep. We have fun becoming the best student athletes we can be.
Session I: Position Specific Fundamentals
Stance/Start, Work on proper stance, body angles, first step mechanics.
Agility/Footwork, bag drills, box drills, change of direction mechanics,
BIG SKILLS: Block Separation, Hand Placement, Blocking, Pulling, Tackling,
Skill Positions: Ball Drills, Route Running, Coverage Techniques.
Eye Discipline,
Alignment and Assignment
Keys and Reads,
Session II: Speed and Agility Training
Stance and Start, Form Running, 40-yard dash training, Pro Agility Shuttle, T and L drills, Box Drills, Hill Sprints, Cool Down Stretching,
Session III Speed Strength Power Training, I use an olympic based strength training program that focuses on athletic development, not strength levels. It is modeled after the Chris Carlisle program used while he was at USC and with the Seattle Seahawks. It can be tailored from the beginner to elite athlete and also incorporated with any strength program you are currently using at your school. I can also create a custom workout program for you if you are interested.
Session IV: Academic Tutoring. I have taught math, health, avid, special education, and P.E. during my career. During my military career, I was a nuclear engineer aboard a submarine, so physics, chemistry, and biology are also areas I can help in. My teaching style with athletes is to make connections and relate all subjects to sport/football so they can use it in a way that is meaningful to them and helps in their retention. I also have SAT preparation classes that I hold as well.
