More About Coach Franklin
I have coached for 13 years at the high school and track club level. I spent 5 years coaching 400m and sprints in Florida at Lakeland Senior High School and 8 years coaching 400m, sprints and Horizontal jumps at Oswego HS in Oswego, IL. Every single year, my 400m athletes have qualified for State, either individually or as a 4x400m relay team. In the 8 years of coaching at Oswego High School, my runners have set 13 records, indoor and outdoor 200m, 400m and 4x400m, Long Jump/Triple Jump and Fresh/Soph 4x400m. 3 years in a row double State qualifiers in long jump, triple jump and 400m. Prior to that I was a NASM certified personal trainer for 3 years.
High school coach was father of legendary Olympian Carl Lewis, Bill Lewis. As a sophomore in High School, I was ranked 3rd in the nation in the 4x400 with a time of 3:18.4, and the national record holder for the U15-U-16 4x400m. I was on the winning 4x400m relay team at the High School Olympic Invitationals and competed at the world-renowned Penn Relays where my 4x400m team placed 2nd in the New Jersey High School Group IV division (the toughest division in New Jersey). Athough not my main event, I ran a sub 2:00 800m as well. In college, I continued running for Army (West Point) with a personal best of 47s 400m before being sidelined with an injury.
-Mental toughness in track, aerobic and anaerobic training. I take a very scientifically based approach to training making sure that we utilize and train the proper neurological and physiological systems to optimize speed and endurance. We will also work on power utilizing a series of exercises drawn from both my experience as a personal trainer and track coach. Block starts will be emphasized on the lower intensity days. Each workout is specifically designed for the athlete. I do not provide "general" workouts for everybody. Each athlete is different in how they need to be developed. Track is both physical and mental. So, I develop both.

Coach Rivera did a great job making me feel comfortable in our lesson. Coming from a completely different sport, and starting track is a very difficult jump- but from Coach Rivera’s positivity and attitude I felt less stressed about start a new sport. Great first lesson! And looking forward to more.

My daughter ended her first session with Coach Franklin with a big smile on her face! She was happy to have worked hard and said things such as "he was very motivating"..."I really felt he knew what he was talking about"..."very encouraging". Coach Franklin came with a planned hour and kept a good balance of instruction, drills and breaks. He was able to get a good "read" on my daughter rather quickly and kept her challenged the entire hour. Looking forward to future sessions.

Coach Rivera thank you for shaping me into the athlete I am today. You provided a phenomenal work out plan that specifically catered to my personal goals for my body. You spent endless hours sharpening my skills and teaching me about how to run the 400m dash. All of your coaching payed off when I shaved my 56 second 400 to a 51.7 400m dash time at the Sectionals meet. Your training is worth more than the cost. - Michael W.
Brian J./ MSOE Athlete (Testimonial)
My Journey with coach Rivera. I had started training with coach Rivera in the 10th grade. At that time, it was my first year ever running for track and field. Coach Rivera had started to be a volunteer coach that very same year for Oswego High school. My first meet I had ran the 4x400 and at that time I had only ran a 1 something. At that time, I thought that a 1 minute was amazing. However, I would soon realize that it was slow and with that I was determined to keep running and keep getting better. Coach Rivera had also realized that I had potential to be a great runner. The rest of the year I had spent just learning the best running form also the best way to run the 400. Then came my junior year. With my junior year I had started with a goal to be the best on the team and qualify for state. The beginning of the season I started off by running a 56. Coach Rivera had told me that to not worry about this and he also said he will train me the hardest he has ever trained me, so I can get better. Every single day was harder than the last at times I had pushed my body to the breaking point and beyond. However, coach Rivera would push me past because he had known that I could take it and more. With all this training I had improved time throughout the year had gotten faster and faster. By the end of the year I had beaten my high schools number 2 runner and I had become the new number 2. I had also run a 49 and gotten close to beating the 1 place runner. This year my grades had also improved dramatically with the more running. Coach had helped for me to form a schedule for homework and studying which helped me to have the not just my best running year however also my best academic year. Then with my senior year the past number 1 runner had graduated, and it was up to me to help my team with everything. Coach Rivera had told me at the beginning of the year that I could do it and that I can help my time be the best that they can be. Throughout the year he had helped me to become not just the best runner bust also the best team mate for everyone on that team. Coach also had helped me to grow up and be more mature with all of life’s problems. Coach also help not just me but also others on the team to become their very best. He had put everyone in difficult positions and made sure everyone on the team was comfortable with anything that will happen to them in a race. Thank you coach Rivera for helping me to become the best runner that I can be. -Brian J.
Jacob Smutzer/ROTC Candidate (Testimonial)
When I first met Coach Rivera my junior year of high school, I was scared of running certain events in track and lacked a lot of confidence. He worked with me through my last two years of high school by shaping me physically into a faster runner, and building me up mentally to improve my attitude in the rough times so I will never quit. Coach Rivera taught me to never give in whether in a race or off the track in any other scenario. His teachings have helped me after high school, especially during basic training camp for ROTC. I had to remind myself to stay positive and keep my confidence up in order to make it through the tough times. I graduated basic training camp and continue to improve my self confidence.
