More About Coach Erik
When it comes to training and doing something complicated the right way, there is no substitute for working with someone who knows more than you.
I spent three full seasons with the Iona University NCAA Division I cross country and track & field program. In my first season, the Gaels won the 2018-19 men's and women's MAAC cross country championships and continued to win those same conference titles for the next two years. Iona's men's program has continued to compete well in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing 10th place in 2021.
Joined Gael Nation having served as an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas for the women’s cross country and track programs. While with the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, I helped lead the program to 2018 indoor and outdoor track & field conference championships. The women’s cross country team placed 22nd at the 2017 DIII NCAA national championships.
Served as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Wisconsin from 2015 till 2017. Working with both the men’s and women’s distance athletes, my efforts helped the men’s team to a first place finish at the 2016 Big Ten Cross Country Championships and second at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. That same season, the men’s team finished eighth and the women’s program took 14th at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
From 2013 till 2015, I was the head cross country and assistant track & field coach at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School in Garner, IA. The school won back-to-back conference championship in track & field and placed a program best fourth at the 2014 Iowa High School State Cross Country Championships. Additionally, I was recognized as a Class 2A At-Large Coach of the Year and selected as the 2014 North Iowa Conference Coach of the Year.
In the summer of 2014 and 2015, respectively, I served as a volunteer assistant at Harvard and the University of Iowa.
I have a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association certification as a strength and conditioning specialist.
Four-year NCAA cross country and track & field student-athlete at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. Competed in cross country and the 800/1500m distances on the track.

Client Reviews
Spencer (CoachUp client)
Erik is simply terrific! He has a keen eye for the athlete's specific issues and had a great program of stretching and training exercises to improve speed and running form. And he connected really quickly with my 11 yo grandson. Looking forward to follow up sessions!
Dan (CoachUp client)
Erik has been incredibly helpful coaching my son. His monthly plans are thorough and well designed with clear progressions.
Erik has also been doing weekly 1:1 coaching sessions with my son that have really been the best thing to help a young runner understand the training much more. The education in each session has been invaluable.
Sincerely, his training methods are great, and his experience as a coach shines through.
Shane, Omaha (Testimonial)
Very few people discover something to be genuinely passionate about in life, and even fewer find running as this passion. Erik, however, pursues running as intensely as anyone I have met. This passion, paired with strong leadership abilities and a great deal of intellect, drive his decorated coaching career. I firmly believe that Erik has the rare ability to guide anyone to the pinnacle of distance running: reaching one's potential.
Kiana, Iowa (Testimonial)
I am a first time half-marathon runner. I trained on my own last summer and ended up getting injured and not being able to race. I have been training with Erik for about three months now and am running healthy and injury free! His plans are tailored to my ability and schedule, and he is always super helpful with any questions I have for him. As someone who was not much of a runner before, I like that he gives me different weekly workouts that are specific and keep things interesting and challenging. Thanks to Erik I am confident that I will be able to finish my first half marathon confident and injury free!
