More About Coach Colby

My coaching experience has been centered on one-on-one athlete development, primarily working with football players looking to improve their position-specific skills, athletic performance, and overall football IQ. I've trained athletes ranging from high school prospects to collegiate players, including multiple athletes who went on to play professionally in the CFL and others who signed as undrafted free agents in the NFL.

What sets me apart as a coach is that I've experienced both sides of the process. I didn't grow up playing football; in fact, I never played a single down until I began training after nearly a decade serving in Navy Special Operations. I had to learn every aspect of the game from the ground up being coached by former Power Four players. Through years of relentless training, I earned the opportunity to play Division I football at the University of New Mexico under Bronco Mendenhall and became the oldest position player in the FBS.

Because I had to build every skill from scratch, I understand what training methods actually translate to performance and which ones don't. I know how to break down complex techniques into simple, actionable coaching points that athletes can immediately apply on the field.

Beyond the physical side of the game, I place a heavy emphasis on the mental component of development. Competing at a high level requires discipline, resilience, confidence, preparation, and the ability to perform under pressure. Those qualities were forged during my military career and reinforced throughout my football journey, and they're principles I bring into every training session.

My experience comes from years of high-level training, competing against elite athletes, and helping players maximize their potential through individualized coaching and mentorship.

My athletic journey has been anything but conventional. After spending nearly a decade serving in Navy Special Operations, I made the decision to pursue Division I football despite never having played the sport before. Through years of training and development, I earned a roster spot at the University of New Mexico, where I played both tight end and defensive end under head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

An accomplishment of mine was becoming the oldest position player in the FBS. That achievement represents far more than age; it reflects the discipline, resilience, and commitment required to compete at the highest level of college football after taking a completely unconventional path.

Throughout my recruiting process, I was fortunate to have conversations with several Power Four programs, including Clemson, Penn State, North Carolina, Indiana, Virginia, and South Florida. Ultimately, I chose the University of New Mexico because it was the best opportunity to continue developing both as a player and as a person.

My greatest accomplishment isn't a trophy or an individual award; it's proving that with the right mindset, relentless work ethic, and elite preparation, it's possible to compete at the Division I level regardless of where you start. That perspective shapes how I coach every athlete I work with today.

A typical 1-on-1 session includes:
- Dynamic warm-up and movement prep to activate speed, mobility, and explosiveness
- Position-specific footwork and agility drills (TE, DE, LB, or skill position)
- Technique work focused on leverage, hand placement, body control, and change of direction
- Position-specific drills (route running, releases, catching, pass-rush moves, block destruction, tackling mechanics, or defensive reads)
- Competition-based drills at game speed to reinforce technique under pressure
- Film-style coaching between reps with immediate feedback and adjustments
- Football IQ discussion covering situational awareness, pre-snap reads, and decision-making
- Position-specific conditioning to finish the session while maintaining proper technique
- Post-workout recap with key takeaways and drills to continue working on independently
