More About Coach Chen
Coached at professional teams overseas. In the US, I have mostly coached high school and collegiate athletes. All of my athletes have made to the nationals, or other national level competition regardless the age and prior background in throwing. For sprinting, I mostly prepare collegiate walk on athletes for tryouts or post collegiate football player for combines. I have an advanced degree in physical science and working on second one. I’m a biomechanics coach. I best improve athletes’ technique and training scientifically. Please ask me for availability. As it changes all the time.

There are two different sessions I plan: throwing sessions and lifting sessions. Based on the athletes age and experience, I will plan the sessions accordingly. Generally, I highly encourage the thrower warm up prior to the sessions.
In throwing sessions I will focus on drill and throwing techniques. I strongly object to the idea of detailing and shaping the training sessions without having a specific athlete. Every athlete is different. Each athlete adapts and responses to different method of training. For example, a youth man, who age between 14-16, excessive weight lifting can ruined the young athlete's career. However, if the athlete's age is over 19, weight lifting becomes crucial to the athlete's success. A general throwing session, starts with very extensive joint stretch to avoid injuries. Different tossing equipment for 3 sets of 10 rep. Then half standing throw: 2 sets of 10 rep, standing throw: 2 sets of 10 rep, hip-pop throw 2 sets of 10 rep, gliding technique/South African drill (according to the athlete's technique) 3 sets of 10 rep, 3 sets of 10 rep full throws. Finally, I would like the athlete to warm down.
In lifting sessions I will focus on the weighted drills and lifting techniques that will help the athletes lifting. The Olympic lifting 4 sets of 3-8, adjust base on the percentage. Squad/bench press/power curl/dead lift/dead lift roll 6 sets of 5-12, adjust base of the percentage. Weighted drills 6 sets of 10. I will end the session with warm down and stretch.
Both of weight lifting session and throwing session are designed to be a little more than one hour. The length of the practice will be changed accordingly.

Great coach, knows what he’s teaching and is able to convey his message to our son. We knew we had the right coach after first session.
Tina (CoachUp client)
Coach Chen was very patient and knowledgeable. It had been a while since my daughter has thrown and was very rusty. Coach Chen took time going over techniques and explaining everything. We have decided to continue ongoing training with him and look forward to seeing improvements.

Coach Chen is amazing. After one season my daughter's technique improved and she threw 6 ft further. He is personable, and knowledgeable. We are thankful to have him as our coach.
Margo Britton (Testimonial)
Chris Zhou was assigned as my training partner in the 2011-12 school year, my freshman year, at Temple University, and since then Chris has continued to make a positive impact in my life. His positivity, optimism, support, and critical eye has been one of the major influences that have made me into the thrower I am today. In the beginning of my collegiate throwing career, I quickly realized that I did not have the foundation necessary to transition from an accomplished high school athlete to a successful NCAA Division 1 athlete. Relying on innate strength, I experienced great difficulty when attempting to execute proper throwing and lifting techniques. As my training partner, Chris demonstrated good technique and patiently offered advice on how I could better my own. In one instance, when our coach could not attend our meet, Chris stepped in the role, and it was his guidance that led to my breaking of Temple University's longstanding discus record. The following year, there was an interval of time in which I did not have a coach at all. Once again, Chris stepped in the role. Even though Chris was no longer a member of Temple's track and field team, he took time out of his busy schedule to watch all of my throwing videos, give critiques, and even threw with me on weekends. Furthermore, Chris has always been willing to offer a listening ear or an open shoulder to cry on. Whether it be venting about my continual frustrations about my training or just complaining about my overall stress level, Chris was never too busy to be there for me, which, in my opinion, is a practice that every adept, effective coach has. When Chris sees a glimmer of potential in an individual, he does not hesitate to invest his own time and effort to help that person use their talent to sharpen his/her skills. He is well-equipped with all of the knowledge and has the experience level to take any fledgling thrower and make them a success.
