More About Coach Braden

This is my 4th year coaching at the High School level. I just moved down to Georgia from Wisconsin this summer. While in Wisconsin, I coached at Appleton West High School. My first year, I was the quarterback coach and the J.V. offensive play-caller. My second year, I was the varsity quarterback coach, the J.V. play-caller, and got promoted to the added title of varsity passing game coordinator. My 3rd and final year at Appleton West, I was promoted to Varsity Offensive Coordinator. My quarterback was a sophomore in High School that year and broke every single season passing record in that school's history. I moved down to Georgia in July, and immediately got hired on to the Effingham County High School as a freshman coach. I still worked with the varsity quarterbacks quite often, and they finished the season with 1,600 yards and 20 TD's while leading us to a 10-2 regular season record and a playoff birth at AAAAA Georgia. After the season and during our exit meetings, the head varsity football coach promoted me to full-time quarterback coach for the Varsity team.

In High School, I was a 2-time 1st team all conference quarterback in the state of Wisconsin. My two years of varsity starting experience, I was able to throw for 3,543 yards, 50 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, with a QB rating of 102.2. I had two separate games of throwing for 6 touchdowns in a game, tying for the 2nd most touchdowns thrown in a game in state history at the time. I also finished my senior year number 4 in the state for passing touchdowns and my junior year number 6 in the state for passing touchdowns. I went on to play at UW-Stevens Point, a division 3 college in Wisconsin. However, I injured my throwing shoulder after my first fall there and I was never the same. I tried again the following spring, but it was unable to work out. I stayed connected to the football team throughout my time there until I transferred to a different college.

I love all things about playing the position. A small but important part, is making sure we include some classroom work. I like to at least have my athletes understand certain coverages and what common concepts are used to defeat those coverages. My biggest thing that I like to work on is footwork. I learned very quickly from my college coach how important tying your footwork to your progressions is. I teach a one step, 3 quick, and 3 long for the drop back game. The 1 step is for perimeter screens, the quick 3 is for quick game, and the long 3 with a hitch is for the true drop back game. There are also some advanced drops within any system, but these are the basics. To go a long with footwork, I will also spend a good majority of time going through pocket presence and roll-out drills. We will throw to improve accuracy at the end of every drill in the short, intermediate, and deep areas, as well as ALWAYS work on throwing on the run. I will also teach proper throwing mechanics and how to throw with full body motions, arm fundamentals, and different arm angles. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I will teach my athletes to become LEADERS.
