More About Coach Art

Over the last three decades, I have coached at the high school and collegiate levels, including the last eighteen years at Bates College. I have USATF Level 2 certification in Endurance and USFTCCCA Track & Field Academy certification in Jumps and Sprints/Hurdles/Relays. I currently work with college-age athletes and coached high school-age athletes for almost twenty years before Bates. Although I have personal experience as a distance runner, I prefer to coach hurdles and long, triple, and high jump.

I was a competitive collegiate distance runner and the state of Maine and New England Division III champion in the 3000m/2 mile. Following college, I ran road races, including several marathons.

A typical session plan will include event-specific techniques and drills. Skill acquisition will occur over time through repetition. Event mastery cannot be achieved in any session, so I take a long-term approach. While I focus on improvement in the event, I am mindful of personal enjoyment, so each session should be a positive experience. Given that it takes time to improve, I equip each individual with skills they can practice independently outside of one-on-one sessions. I prefer that a parent be present at each session to help monitor individual progress and learn the event's specifics.

Coach Art was very attentive and great to work with! He helped my student athlete high jumper gain some new skills during the off season.

Coach Art has been fantastic for my daughter to work with! He was quickly able to pinpoint what areas she needed to work on and developed productive sessions with drills and activities that he could easily explain to her. She has left both sessions excited and ready to come back to learn even more! I would highly recommend him!

My son had a really productive session with Art and was really surprised with how much he learned and is excited to continue. He liked how patience and easy going Art is and how Knowledgeable he was. Really happy with our experience

Coach Art is a great teacher of young track athletes. His ability to explain proper technique and use drills to put that technique into practice is really amazing. I read another review that said her son was excited after working with Art and we had the same experience. Our son left the session really pumped and excited to get out on the track with his team. Thanks Art!

Coach art was excellent. My son learned more in 5 minutes than he did all season in track. His explanations and coaching were clear, friendly, and my son left talking non stop about the session.

I have known Art for a long time and have, over the years, compared notes and discussed many of the technical aspects of coaching. I have enlisted his help in those areas I do not consider my areas of expertise. He is knowledgeable about both the track and field sides of coaching. I can recommend him as a qualified and committed coach.
