More About Coach Alex

I'm experienced in training athletes from college elite, to intermediate, to beginner. I've primarily trained athletes in Track & Field, specializing in Sprints, Hurdles and Relays, but I've also coached athletes across different event groups with speed and power overlap like horizontal and vertical jumpers, and across different sports such as Soccer, Lacrosse and Football for speed, agility, and strength & conditioning. I have an adept grasp of how and when to employ training and weight lifting to cultivate speed, strength, power, lactic tolerance, neuromuscular coordination, block start and sprint technique, and conditioning. I also have a propensity for building mental toughness and resilience in athletes through challenges, and inspiring people to reach higher and achieve greater than they, or others believed they could. In 7 years out of college I officially have 4 years of collegiate coaching experience and 3 years of high school coaching experience. I've pursued and obtained USATF Level 1 certification, USATF Level 2 certification in Sprints, Hurdles & Relays, USTFCCCA Strength & Conditioning certification, and an ISSA Personal Trainer certification which has allowed me to work 1 on 1 with many individual athletes in & out of season. I've coached athletes at the post-collegiate, NCAA national, sub-national collegiate, and high school levels. I typically work with college age, post college-age, or high school-age athletes. I've coached at the State University of New York at Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan College, Spencerport High School, Kendall High School, and Wellington C. Mepham High School.

In high school I was a 3 sport athlete, competing in Varsity Football, Track and Field, and Baseball. I went on to compete briefly in Football and Track and Field in Junior College and then moved on to SUNY Brockport where I focused exclusively on Track and Field. I was proud to be acknowledged as a team captain in both high school and college. In high school I went to Nike Indoor Nationals in the SMR relay, and we finished 12th overall. In college I set 3 SUNY Brockport school records, added another 3 top-5 all-time performances, and earned All-ECAC honors. My talents took me to 4 regional championships and 1 national championship, but my truest achievements as an athlete have been in how far I've come from where I started. I found that I was not as gifted as others upon joining track in high school, but I pushed myself to learn from many different coaches and peers. I pushed myself to outwork my teammates in every practice, and my opponents at every meet. When my junior college team practiced 3 days a week, I coached myself the other 4. When Brockport didn't have an indoor track, I ran in the hallways or in the snow. And at one point I saw my 400m dash time improve by 4 seconds, and my 200m dash time by over 2 seconds, in less than 2 years. I refused to ever let my circumstances dictate my results, or define my abilities. And I earned my place at regional and national championships, and as one of the best sprinters in the history of my college, despite being told by a previous coach that I would not be able to compete at that level. I consider that my greatest accomplishment.

A typical training session will start with a warm up that will move from more simple movements like jogging or cycling to more complex movements like skips, jumps, and dynamic stretches that will grow more complex and comprehensive as we go, and will be specified to prepare the athlete's neuromuscular system for the challenges of the specific workout. Depending on personal factors like injury history, I may guide the athlete through some specific stretches as well, though I don't typically advise static stretching before sprint training. Workouts can vary depending on the client's goals, and my assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. An athlete looking to become more explosive may engage in a series of short sprints, 15-40m in length, and accelerations from a starting position. I would take this opportunity early in the workout to implement observations about form and strategies to improve it. After, I may utilize resistance belts to help them achieve a greater force output, better upper body action, or better acceleration posture. Or I may put them on my Vertimax platform and attach accommodating resistance cables while they perform sprint drills and plyometrics to enhance explosiveness, coordination, and fast twitch muscle fiber content. I may have them finish with some bounding or medicine ball tosses, and eventually do a cool down jog and brief stretch. For an athlete looking to improve agility, I would utilize more equipment like mini hurdles, spacing them out at different measures to work on turnover rate and coordination, speed ladders to further enhance coordination, and mobility, or cones to work on lateral mobility, and abductor/adductor strength to increase change of direction capability. An athlete who needs to strengthen their sprint endurance will work with timed, medium sprinting intervals of 60-200 meters in length depending on the event or sport, with shorter rests between intervals. For lactic tolerance I would increase these distances to 150 to 400m. I will also employ Vertimax training here with short rests (10-30 sec) between rounds of rapid fire plyos and sprint drills. And I would absolutely end any sprint endurance or lactic tolerance session with a cool down jog and extensive stretching. These are just a few examples however of how we can work out the components of speed and sprinting, and any complete program will feature overlap of a few, or possibly all of these areas.

"Coach Alex is truly amazing! In just one session, he was able to improve my daughter's running skills and boost her confidence significantly. Even her high school coach noticed the improvement! We are extremely grateful for having found Coach Alex and highly recommend him to anyone considering his services. If you're on the fence about hiring him, just go for it – you won't regret it!"

Our 16 year old daughter had her 1st training with Coach Alex and she thoroughly enjoyed it! Alex spent over an hour providing sprinting techniques and exercises, to help him assess her current skill level and capabilities. Both our daughter, husband & I agreed that Coach Alex seemed friendly, patient, knowledgeable & has a genuine interest in Track & assisting others. We are looking forward to future training sessions with him!

Alex did a great time with the 4 boys we had working with him and spent a ton of time with them. Really appreciate the hard work

Coach Alex was a great coach! He made me and my friend feel very comfortable on the drills we were practicing. It was our first time doing 1 on 1 sessions and we enjoyed it. He is very friendly and you can tell he has great experience with track and field or teaching others.

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Gibbons my junior year of college. I remember our head track coach said he was going to bring in someone who had an "eye" for technique and could offer some knowledge to our sprinting events. I am so appreciative that Alex came into the picture and could offer me advice on speed and explosiveness that I never had of in all my previous years in track. He analyzed my starts in the blocks and was immediately able to make corrections that quickly gave me results with quicker times. What I love about Alex as a coach is his drive for competition that he shares with his athletes. He would spend hours some days talking to me about my goals and dreams in NCAA Division II track. He wanted it for me, and spent time and even money on bringing me and the other athletes closer to our goals. He purchased countless pieces of equipment on his own that he knew would benefit us. And of these, the biggest game changer for me was the Vertimax he uses, it gave me strength and speed like I never felt before. Junior year my times improved significantly and I was able to become an All-American for the first time. The following summer he helped prepare me with a sprint-specialized list of training and lifting that he had for me and several other motivated athletes. He changed my old habits and ways of thinking on lifting. I used to think "this has always worked for me" but he taught me to have an open mind and that I could become stronger, and better. The next year, as a senior I maxed out on all my weights, better than ever. And it was specified to my track events so it directly improved my times in the 100m, 200m and even the 60 and 400. When we got to the national championships I was stronger than ever and was able to produce all-time personal records in both the prelims, and finals each time, bringing my 200 down to 23.80 Indoors and 23.32 by the end of Outdoor, while my 100 fell to 11.60. With these results I was thrilled to bring home the silver medal for both the Indoor, and Outdoor 200m, and I also became a All-american in the 100m which I never imagined would be possible. These accomplishments are a direct reflection of a dedicated and knowledge-driven coach that was always pushing me to better myself. He cared for me in all aspects and it made a difference. He has always been a friend to me to this day supporting my nursing career. I cannot thank him enough and I hope more athletes get to experience his passion for the beautiful sport of track and field.
