More About Coach Adam

I have coached athletes from age 8 thru late 60s, from the elementary school, high school, collegiate to pro level, with a variety of organizations from Cougar PowerSports, to Occidental College, to UCLA Football, at Crunch Fitness Burbank, and privately since then with BJJ and other sport athletes of a variety of ages and levels from amateur to pro. Resume available with more details upon request and website is www.PowerBlockTraining.com
I am certified through the National Strength & Conditioning Association and I have published multiple papers on the science behind resistance training and my programming in particular, including with industry leader Alan Aragon.
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, NSCA (January 2019-Present)
Certified Personal Trainer, NSCA (September 2017-2020)
First Aid CPR/AED, American Heart Association (March 2016-Present)
B.A. Kinesiology.

I competed at the high school level in football for the last two years and at the collegiate D3 level for all 4 years, starting for the last 3 of 4 years. Montgomery High School and Occidental College respectively, and I have also competed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the amateur/white belt level and was the 2019 Jiu Jitsu World League Season Champion in my weight division. Plans to continue competing at the blue belt/pro level have been offset by COVID and injury for now.

I typically interview the client first about any past injuries or conditions that will affect our training, what their current training status is and what their goals are, before going over how we will achieve them together. I typically outline how the program works while leading the client through a foam rolling session to prepare them to activate their muscles without adhesions, warm them up, and serve as a broad spectrum analysis as to whether there are any muscular issues we can identify via pain response to soft tissue massage. After that I lead the client through a set or two of the baseline program I have individually designed for their needs while coaching form and explaining how and WHY the program works as well as why we are doing each movement. Usually by now it has been about an hour so I discuss a tiny bit of the nutrition aspect, stressing protein intake above all as without that, resistance training is effectively useless, and can in fact decrease muscle mass and sport performance despite motor learning advancements. I allude to a stretching circuit I will cover the following session if possible as flexibility is an important piece of injury prevention as to my understanding one should look at the body as a closed system you can add and remove tension from. Further nutrition details, programming, new movements and their corresponding form, as well as supplement regimen can be covered in the following sessions. Eventually the client just lifts with me as resistance training possesses inherent risk whereas stretching and mobility work such as foam rolling has minimal risk. It is also worth noting it that I teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/self-defense lessons, speed & agility training, as well as a wide variety of lifting movements, stretching and massage/mobility work. Almost every exercise or stretch I will ever program for a client to do with or without me has been demonstrated via video and conveniently sorted into corresponding tabs on my Instagram for easy referral back to.

Client Reviews

Adam is by far the most knowledgeable and effective strength coach I have ever worked with. He has the skills and abilities to benefit people of all levels of fitness. From trying to lose weight to becoming the highest level athlete you can become, Adam will give you the tools and knowledge to achieve your goals. He has very flexible hours and a wide array of workouts within his program. He will be able to work with any restrictions you may have and cater to your needs as an individual. Working with Adam is 100% the best decision I’ve made for my health and fitness.
Adam Koel is exceptionally knowledgable about everything regarding the human body. His expertise comes into constant play during our training sessions and he's generous with advice on nutrition, equipment, psychology and long-term benefits. He's also a pleasure to work with and extremely flexible with his schedule and ability to offer remote sessions. I came to Adam because I'd been diagnosed with osteoperosis and he was all over my specific goal to build more bone as well as muscle.
Adam is the best trainer I’ve ever had. Not only is he encouraging, helpful, and positive, he’s the most knowledgeable fitness expert I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. He will help you not only meet, but exceed your goals! My life has been forever changed for the better for knowing him.
Adam is one of the most knowledgeable trainers in Los Angeles providing the highest value to his clients — at a really affordable rate for a trainer with his level of credentials and expertise. If you’re looking for a highly specialized program, looking to pack on muscle, or simply get shredded, Adam will help you achieve your goals. Most of all, he’s as kind as he is passionate about fitness.
Been training with Adam and doing the power block program for 2 over two years now. I’ve seen a huge improvement in my strength, physique, and confidence. He is an incredibly knowledgeable trainer who will tell you the science behind each movement and why we do certain exercises. 3 hours a week for the body you’ve always wanted, that’s very little commitment for incredible results.
It's been more than a year with Adam, and it’s been such a fun and fruitful ride. Glad I have a solid coach but also a quality friend who loves sharing any knowledge ranging from diet to lifting to BJJ. His three requirements from me were consistent workouts, good form, and sufficient protein. It’s that simple if you follow the program. I’m no longer lost in a sea of confusing contradictory information. I put my trust in a guy who’s done his due diligence, knows the science, and puts in the hard work, overcoming many unfavorable odds himself. And of course, he’s looking out the most for your safety! Which enables you to be consistent and achieve whatever you want. Best of all, he’s willing to share everything he’s learned to those who ask. You might be wondering if Power Block is another fad or “is it just CrossFit?” I thought the same things. But Adam is an old-school, down-to-earth kinda guy. I’m super thankful for him. He won’t mislead you with any trendy fitness gimmicks. He’s straightforward and gives you the best chance to get your results. I love that he doesn’t care as much about physical appearance, though it’s a wonderful side effect, but he prioritizes functional strength (especially for jiu jitsu guys!) and above all, safety. All for the low time commitment of 3 hours/week in the gym. As someone who genuinely does not enjoy torturing his body and doesn’t have much time, that was an offer I couldn’t refuse.
My friends and I took a self defense class with Adam at Power Block Training and had the best time! He was very professional and taught us so many useful tips and skills, and gave us great context as to how to incorporate these skills in real life situations. He was also so friendly and knowledgable about general fitness, strength training, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! His space was clean and tidy and he immediately made us feel comfortable and made sure we all got a chance to practice the techniques. Highly recommend training with him!
Adam is the most knowledgeable personal trainer I’ve ever worked with. His methods, training, and movements are backed by research and he can adjust to any level or injury. Highly recommend!
Adam is an amazing coach to work with! Before Power Block Training, I had a two year stint of on and off work ours. Adam really helped me find a routine that worked for me and tailored it to help me regain the strength from my college track days! He's supportive, answers questions honestly and mindfully, and I couldn't recommend him more!
