More About Coach WenHong

I am a Level 1 Road Runners Club of America (RRCA)-certified coach. I currently do informal (unpaid) personal run coaching online for friends and family as well as interested members of a running club I belong to, BARA (Bloomington Area Runners Association). I love coaching adults one-on-one for 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, marathons and ultramarathons (50Ks, 50-milers and 100milers) and have coached people to PRs in half-marathons and marathons.

I just started running 9 years ago as an adult at 26yrs old. Over the last 9 years, I have worked my way, starting from running 2miles at a 11min/mile pace, to covering distances from 5ks to hundred-milers, achieving a Boston Qualifier (personal marathon PR of 3:03), and completing a full Ironman. While I have podiumed at smaller, local ultras (mainly 50Ks), my personal accomplishment that I treasure most is completing the Western States 100 under 24-hours. I have learnt so much through those tough experiences that I would love to share with the people I coach.

As I typically do one-on-one coaching, I like to start by hearing how their week has been going and what they have going on in their life. Running is a part of life and I like having a holistic picture of their life so that I can give recommendations later on how to adjust goals or training plans, in order to deal with life. What I focus on during a particular session depends on their prior experience as a runner/endurance athlete, their goals and where we are at in their training cycles. For beginner runners at the start of a training plan, I like to emphasize consistency, avoiding injury by developing a strong body with good running form, and developing their confidence in being able to achieve their goals by setting and tackling intermediate goals to breakdown the larger process into manageable digestible pieces. With veteran runners who have a bit more experience, I like to involve them more in the training plan development by educating them as to how the training plan was put together and discuss the purpose and details of workouts. As runners progress towards the final race or goal, then my focus during the session tends to shift more towards race prep, fine-tuning their training with race-specific workouts and, most importantly, the mental game to get them in the right mindset to achieve their goals. As with every runner, I like to get feedback occasionally so I can customize/personalize their training plan and my coaching style to suit their needs. Life gets in the way and everyone has their own personality. I like being creative in order to accommodate life's curveballs as well as stimulate every individual's motivation to get them where they want to go.

Client Reviews

Coach Chris is so knowledgeable! He has taught my son so much in just one session. We can’t wait to keep working with him each week. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for someone with running expertise who is also kind and encouraging!

The session we had with Coach Chris was very thorough. He took the time to get to know my daughter as a runner and what her goals were for the session. Her goal was to improve her form. He videoed her and even looked at old shoes to learn about how she runs. He then modeled and practiced strategies to improve her form. She was able to implement his techniques right away. Coach Chris took a lot of time with my daughter to ensure she understood and could carry out his instruction. I am thankful for the time and effort he put into the session. His knowledge of all aspects of running was impressive.

My daughter just finished up her initial session with coach Chris last weekend. Being only 12 years old, and knowing that coach Chris had not alot of expierience coaching pre- teens, she was nervous.
Coach Chris quickly turned that around with my daughter. He was very professional. He made her feel right at ease from the start and that led to a great training session.
Coaches knowledge of the sport inside and out was very evident. His main concern for my daughter was that she was safe, and remain injury free, and have some fun while learning. All very important to me and my daughter.
Unbelievable first session with coach Chris. Both my daughter and I are looking forward to continuing her training with him. By the way...she smiled all the way home and hasnt stopped yet. Excellent stuff!

Chris was instrumental in helping me train and finish my first 100 miler. He taught me how to train smarter and more consistently, but at the same time keeping workouts fun and creative. He customized a training program based on my skill set and had a solid plan for the goals I was trying to achieve. Drawing from his wealth of ultra-running knowledge, Chris taught me how to run more efficiently, how to pace myself, and how to problem solve during a race. With his guidance I was able to stay healthy and injury free. If you’re looking for someone to get you ready for your next race, or improve your overall ability to run, Coach Chris is definitely the guy for the job!
I think Chris did a great job of checking in and modifying the training to how I was performing. I liked the flexibility Chris offered by giving me a range for weekly mileage and not having a strict plan on how I would accomplish that mileage other than long runs and weekly workouts. I really don’t have any negative feedback as I liked Chris's somewhat hands-off approach. The only feedback I have is maybe providing more structure on which strengthening exercises to do and when to do them during the week as I think strengthening was a huge part of keeping me injury free and healthy during this training, which Chris definitely advocated for during his coaching.
