More About Coach Todd

As I move into my 13th year as a trainer and coach, I remain thrilled at the opportunity to engage a wider community of youth athletes. With a decade of experience training and coaching athletes on the middle- and high-school levels, I am a USATF-Registered Level II Coach with a concentration in the endurance events & speciality certification in cross country. Having trained and coached many of the most successful and decorated distance athletes in the Minisink Valley School District, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and expertise in the distance running events with youth athletes across the Hudson Valley and Tri-State areas.

Prior to beginning my training and coaching career, I was fortunate to enjoy a decade of competitive experience on the interscholastic and intercollegiate levels. Following my years as a middle- and high-school athlete in Orange County, New York, I went on to complete 12 seasons as a varsity letter winner in cross country and track & field at Dickinson College. In addition to All-Mideast Region and Academic All-American honors, I advanced as an individual to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championships in cross country.

In a typical session, my clients can expect a highly individualized experience, rooted in attention to detail in both design and implementation. Daily emphasis is placed on a thorough warm-up, time-measured work bouts and active cool down. Individualized goals and objectives will be addressed with specificity of focus, including progression runs, hill repeats, step pyramids, threshold runs, tempo runs, cruise intervals and speed repetitions. Ancillary activities will include drills in form and mechanics, barefoot running, nasal breathing, strength and flexibility exercises, and guided visualization.

Coach Todd is very knowledgeable and helpful to runners. He is patient in learning how you run and providing guidance to run better. Plus he really cares about developing runners to their potential. It had been 39 years since SUNY Orange fielded a cross country team. Todd Derkacz coaches both the men's and women's teams and he brings a great deal of passion for the sport. In 2012, Derkacz enrolled part time in the exercise studies program at SUNY Orange and formed a club program that enjoyed modest success. The following year, Derkacz created eXCelsior Running Club in Westtown to coach young people. In both cases, he wanted to give back to a sport that has been so good to him.
