More About Coach Tanner
Growing up as the son of a teacher and a football coach taught me that training and coaching athletes is more than a job, it is a calling. Earning my Bachelor of Science in K-12 PE/Health, and later a Master’s degree in Education, trained me to teach skills that athletes desire to learn in a variety of ways. No two athletes learn or perform in the same way, so why teach and coach them the same?
My coaching experience is not one that is traditional to most. I started my coaching career as a graduate assistant at Avila University and Baker University. During my tenure in the National Football League, I directed a summer football camp for ages 8-14 for seven years. After I retired from the NFL, I returned to coaching as the Special Teams Coordinator and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Baker University for three years.
Coaching Experience:
2007 Graduate Assistant- Avila University: Quarterbacks and Special Teams
2008 Graduate Assistant- Baker University: Wide Receivers and Special Teams
2011-2017 RSR Sports Football Clinic: All Positions/ Ages 8-14
2018-2021 Coordinator – Baker University: Special Teams/ Strength and Conditioning
My athletic experience is what sets me apart from many coaches. I played high school football at Midway High School in Waco, TX. I was then recruited to play quarterback and long snapper at Baker University. Following my graduation from Baker, this is where things became different. While working as a graduate assistant for football, I developed my own specialized training and nutrition plans that allowed me gain weight as well as increase my speed and agility. In 2009, after a number of tryouts with NFL teams, I was signed to a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs as a long snapper. Following my release in the 2009 preseason, I went back to training. In 2010 I was signed to play for the New York Jets as a long snapper. After seven successful seasons with the Jets, I retired and returned to coaching and became the Special Teams Coordinator and the Strength and Conditioning at Baker University.
Athletic Experience:
1999-2003 Midway High School- Waco, TX- Quarterback/ Long Snapper
2003-2007 Baker University- Quarterback/ Long Snapper (Team Captain 2006-2007)
2009 Kansas City Chiefs- Long Snapper
2010-2017 New York Jets- Long Snapper
2010, 2011, 2014 Player of the Week, New York Jets
2015 Special Teams Player of the Year, New York Jets
The first step in the process is to meet, in person, with all potential clients and parents/guardians. That way we can discuss all variables to training, and you can get a better sense if I can what you are looking for before booking any training sessions.
Sessions are customized to each individual athlete. With knowledge learned from playing in the NFL and coaching at the collegiate level, I am able to teach a variety of skills to all levels of athletes. My initial session consists of assessing each athlete’s skill level, knowledge level, and personality. At the same time, it is just as important for the athlete to learn about me and assess my coaching style. I believe that by building a strong, positive coaching relationship athletes learn and retain the knowledge taught to them.
Setting goals is also important. After the initial session, each athlete will set both short- and long-term goals. Once goals have been set, I will design an individualized plan to help the athlete achieve their desired goals. Another variable that can play a factor determining session work is each athlete’s schedule. After receiving a schedule of availability, I am able to accelerate or slow down the progression of the each of the sessions to maximize the performance of each athlete.
My area of expertise is long snappers, kickers, and punters. Also having played and coached quarterbacks, my knowledge base for coaching that position is also very high. All other positions can be customized based upon the information I learned while playing in the NFL, as well as from other coaches at the collegiate and NFL level.
Many of the skills and drills I use work for several positions. Much of the training I use, I have performed myself and later adapted to create high performance levels from my players at the college level. So, whether the athlete wants to perform better at the middle school, high school, college or even pro level, I have the knowledge and coaching expertise to help them achieve their goals.
If an athlete is trying to improve their performance to receive a college scholarship or is preparing for a career in the NFL, I can help by setting up the athlete for success at every turn.
If all of the above sounds like what you are looking for in a coach, then please send me a message.

My son trains, conditions, & consistently tries his hardest to get better than he was yesterday. His teachers, trainers, & coaches really appreciate his work ethic. Tamner has in the short time working with LaVelle really helped him straighten out some of the problems that he was having. LaVelle really likes Tanner, & he's not hesitant with expressing the competency level of coaches, trainers, & different camps & showcases that he's attended &/or come in contact with.

Coach Tanner has exceeded our expectations! He is a true teacher, and focuses on the whole athlete- education, training, sport, and teamness. He listened to what my son wants to achieve on the field and is teaching him exactly what he needs to succeed, including things my son didn't even know would matter. He truly takes a vested interest in the kids, and has a wealth of experience, knowledge and skill to turn kids into what they can be if they put in the work. I would recommend Coach Tanner to anyone and everyone! He is very easy to work with, communicate with, and will come to you on your schedule. Thanks, Tanner! You've been a God send.

My sophomore kid wanted to play football and we had no idea how to even start. I am so glad that we met Mr. Tanner, during our first meet only we liked him. The way he made us feel comfortable about so many things was impressive and helpful. With his guidance not only my son is learning new tricks and improving day by day, as parents also we are learning new things.
He is a great person, very knowledgeable and also helpful. He is patient, punctual, a great mentor and most definitely a great coach. I will highly recommend him.
Wendy (CoachUp client)
Coach Tanner is very patient and explains each move and its importance to the overall game. He’s helped with nutrition and agility and many things beyond breaking down the actual individual moves needed on the field.
