More About Coach Steve

I have coached college basketball since 1992. Graduate Assistant at Arizona State University. I then moved on as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and Scottsdale Community College. I have been a head college coach since 2005 at the University of Great Falls and Chandler Gilbert Community College. I have been the camp director for the Phoenix Suns youth basketball camps since 2003.

I was a 3 year high school varsity starter. I was an all conference player my senior year. I played 1 year at a division 3 school the State University at Cortland.

First I would meet with parents and the athlete about their strengths and weakness. Depending on age and skills develop a fundamental way (plan) to improve the player. Main areas would be ball handling and shooting. For a beginner would use:
Ball handling : Warm up hands (pound ball), Circles, Basic 8’s, Form Dribble: Pound, Push pull, Cross over, Stop and Go, Zigzag, reverse/spin, between legs, behind back, Back-up dribble, Cones : Emphasis placed on eyes up and being able to do these with both hands. Use both half court and full court. 30 minutes
Beginner shooting - form shooting - developing muscle memory - footwork. hand placement on the ball, bend knees, follow through, good rotation of the ball - very important to know your range
Layups - right hand off left foot, left hand off right foot, reverse lay ups, Mikan drill
Catch and shoot jumpers with correct form and know your range
Jumpers off the dribble , one and two dribble. 30 minutes

For more advance players; many of the same ball handling drills but add in two ball dribbling, how to create space from your defender off the dribble, how to use a pick and roll - reading the defense, attacking the big guy

1 on 1 moves : jab and go, rocker step, step back jumper, hesitation moves

Shooting: 1 and 2 dibble pull up series, how to use a screen moving with out the ball - curl cut flare cut, Ginobli move
Always concentrating on correct fundamentals with hands and foot work and going game speed

Client Reviews

Very helpful and friendly, we’re super excited that he’s helping our son develop his basketball skills.

Nate loved it! Thank you for being so positive and communicating in a way that was easy for him to understand.

Coach Silsby did a fantastic job with my 10 year old son right on the first lesson! I noticed he was very detail oriented in every drill they went trought that I didn’t realize how much those little details can make a big difference to improve my sons game.
My son can’t wait to have her next lesson!

My son just completed 10 lessons with coach Silsby and I can see how much he has helped my son to improve his game in these 10 sessions! Coach Silsby is awesome! very patient, motivating my son during all the session, encouraging him to learn the basketball fundamentals the right way and as a result of this 10 seasions my son’s confidence is back and actually played very confident this weekend, scoring, stealing and rebounding!!
We will continue with more sessions… well worth it!

Coach Steve was amazing. He is very friendly and supportive and my son felt comfortable immediately. His warmup drills were really good and he focuses on the fundamentals and keeping it simple. He worked on the basics making it fun at the same time. Just at the end of the first class, I could see an improvement in the way my son handled the basketball. Very happy to have signed up with Coach Steve!

Coach Steve has been such an amazing coach for my 7 year old. He is very patient & considerate with him. He always creates a new routine with new skill integrations every session while still readdressing previously taught components. Coach knows exactly how to challenge my son but also encourages and builds confidence in him at the same time. My son looks forward to his sessions with coach Steve. I have seen tremendous improvement during my sons games with only 3 sessions with coach Steve. We will continue working with coach as my son progresses.

My son, Preston, had a great session with Coach Steve. He has worked with other coaches and he felt like this session was as good or better than any he has had. Coach Steve ran him though several drills that touched on most aspects of the game and we look forward to working with him again soon!

Very professional and nice coach. My son learned a lot from the private lessons.

Coach Steve was great with my son. It was nice to have someone tell my son exactly what he needs to do to get better and be able to play at the next level. My son is looking forward to more workouts with Coach Steve.

Coach Steve is very friendly & encouraging. With his many years of experience he was able to break down each drill so that my daughter could repeat them to the best of her ability.

My son had his first session with Coach Steve this weekend and I was thoroughly impressed. Not only was Coach Steve encouraging, but he was completely engaged from start to finish. The progression of drills were appropriate for my son's skill level and time was taken to break everything down before starting each new drill. It is apparent Coach Steve's passion for the game reflects onto the players he coaches. I am looking forward to watch the development of my son with future sessions.
