More About Coach Ryan

I have been coaching tennis for the last four years in the greater Los Angeles area. I have coached private lessons as well as group lessons and have also coached a high school team (Loyola High School of Los Angeles). I have worked with a wide range of ages and skill levels, starting with kids as young as 5 years old and teaching adults well into the 70s. I have worked with top ranked junior players, kids who have never picked up a racket before, and recreational adult players looking to improve their game.

I have played tennis on the Southern California Junior Circuit and in high school at Loyola High School of Los Angeles. After graduation from high school, I played two years of tennis at Glendale Community College before attending UC Riverside and playing tennis at a Division 1 school in the Big West Conference. I started in both singles (#3-4) and doubles (#3) during both of my seasons at UCR and graduated in 2011 with a Communications Degree.

I enjoy and find the best results when I am working with players who are passionate about tennis and are goal oriented. This can include players of all talents and abilities (beginner - advanced player), and these goals can range from improving your game to becoming a professional. I have a holistic approach (mind, body, and spirit) to tennis, and I operate my sessions accordingly. In a typical hour and 15 minute long private session, I will start with a brief mindfulness meditation to get the student ready and prepared for tennis. Often times, people are rushing to and from one activity to the next, and they are not very mindful when they arrive at practice. The purpose of the brief meditation is to clear the mind of all the extra noise from the day, and prepare it for the task at hand, playing tennis. We will also work on a goal or area of focus for the lesson, and we will do some visualization of this during the mediation. After the mediation we will start hitting balls and working on whatever areas of the game the student requests. At the end, I will show each student some yoga based stretches to do, so they can cool down and recover from the workout.

Excellent coach!

Coach Ryan is a great coach! He is very professional in all of his interactions, he's super knowledgeable about the sport, and he has a ton of patience (even with a total beginner, like me!) I'd recommend Coach Ryan to anyone who wants to improve their skills whether they are a novice or have been playing for years. He'll help you improve your technique, and with his more holistic approach you're likely to gain more flexibility, mental focus and a healthier lifestyle, as well. Thanks Ryan!

I initially came to know coach Ryan observing him instruct another Jr. tennis player this past summer. Seeing how amazing he was at explaining the intricacies of the serve I knew I had to inquire about him teaching my 12 year old twins Ryan and Noah who were struggling with this stroke. Both boys suffered greatly from technique, strength and physical conditioning issues which we needed to address most urgently. From the very first lesson, coach Ryan gave us a comprehensive analysis of what the twins needed to work on. In just a few months of his instruction, their levels had significantly improved. Although twins, Ryan and Noah had two completely different personalities and styles, nevertheless, coach Ryan was able to adjust and communicate with each boy at his level of understanding in order to pull out the attributes needed for their improvement. Coach Ryan worked very closely with us to get the boys on track and provided us a more comprehensive program to get them moving in the right direction. We could choose any other instructor for the twins but after seeing the results from coach Ryan in such a short period, we knew that he had something special to offer. Instead of mere repetitious ball feeding, coach Ryan shows each boy how to execute each stroke with proper technique. As they are adjusting, he shows them visually where they are having technique issues and how to overcome their limitations. The thing I like best about coach Ryan is that he asks the boys to have a commitment on the court. I don’t think I’ve ever met an instructor as invested in his pupils. From day one coach Ryan is fully engaged and dedicated to the improvement of his students. I would highly recommend coach Ryan as a tennis instructor. Not only is he a great guy, constantly encouraging his students, he gets results!
