More About Coach Mitch
I have experience coaching at the middle school and high school level. I have coached a full season with the Saint Paul and Ohara middle school track teams. I also have experience coaching high school level athletes as a counselor during the University of Oregon's track camp. I have coached high school level athletes who have gone on to compete at the highest of institutions at the NCAA Division 1 Level.
I competed at a collegiate level in track and field for four years. I am a two time NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier and a 4 time NCAA Outdoor Championships Qualifier. I compete in the heptathlon indoors and the decathlon outdoors. I have competed in both the USA championships and the Olympic Trials placing top 7 in each. I have also competed for team USA in two separate competitions.
I choose to spend the first part of the session strengthening technique and building proper form before moving on to more advanced technical skills later in the practice. As an example for the hurdles I would warm up the athletes by doing multiple hurdle drills that strengthen the hips and enhance the proper hurdling form. Then would gradually work into a full speed hurdle practice out of blocks once the athlete has demonstrated to me that they understand the proper technique and I see them improving. I believe that with any event it is important to work on the basics of running form and footwork before developing the more technical skills. I approach a practice with a strong attitude ready to build on what we had learned the day before.
