More About Coach Melissa

My background is in Kripalu and traditional Hatha yoga and I have advanced training in anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, ergonomics, and yoga therapy. In addition to being an E-RYT 500 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with over 2,000 hours of teaching experience), I have been working in health research for over 10 years, carry a Master of Science degree in Integrative Medicine Research, am a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP), and lead an evidence-informed practice. I provide a personalized yoga approach for my students that can advance performance by strengthening areas not always addressed in training regimens and also address compensatory patterns. I have experience working with injuries and providing a therapeutic approach to recovery. I meet the individual where he/she/they are at and provide a holistic approach that integrates breath and meditation, in addition to movement. I have worked as a private and group instructor at yoga studios, integrative health clinics, surgical centers, client homes and businesses, and educational institutions. You can find more information about me at biomeproject.org

I've been an athlete and outdoor enthusiast all my life - a long distance runner, tennis player, cyclist, swimmer, back-country skier, and more recently a surfer, standup paddle boarder and am currently learning to kite surf. Yoga has been an incredible asset to all my activities - keeps me balanced and continuing to advance. I have sustained different injuries, including a mid-back injury when hit by a car cycling. I understand the challenges of chronic pain and applying yoga as a tool to move beyond pain, regain mobility and strength.

Excellent!

Melissa led a morning yoga class at a conference I hosted on Kauai in February 2018. It was raining when the class began so we started indoors. There were a lot more people who showed up first thing in the morning for Melissa’s class than ever had before at previous conferences. Having never done a class with Melissa before, and having practiced yoga for over 40 years, I could tell right away that she was an excellent instructor. She was calm and clear and gave just the right amount of instructions. When it stopped raining, we went out to the beach and finished the class there. Of course that’s the part I enjoyed the most – with my feet in the sand and a gentle breeze blowing the salt air, it was a dream. Melissa circulated through the group and gently gave me one small personal pointer on an asana that made a big difference in my alignment and experience. I remember feeling quite blissful when the class was over. I know I had a big smile on my face. The class really contributed to the spirit of community that is one of the objectives of the conference. Next time I’m in Portland, I will definitely attend any classes Melissa is teaching while I’m there.
As an experienced student and teacher of yoga I’m not easy to impress but I think Melissa Barber is someone that stands out in her ability to teach yoga. I have had a yoga class and a one to one with with Melissa Barber. Both were outstanding! Melissa pointed out postural corrections I hadn’t been aware of even after 20 years of practice! She is awesome! Due to her corrections I have become much more aware of my upper body including my muscular development in the ribs and my posture. Positive changes are occurring. My back is becoming straighter, more supple and flexible and more aligned each day as I practise. Melissa is a sensitive teacher who truly understands the meaning of compassion. I think everyone should attend her classes to see what gems they can gather from her! Better yet book a 1-1. You won’t be sorry.
Melissa is very welcoming and professional. After taking an extensive inventory on my health, she helped me determine some action steps to start taking on my nutrition for the following week. This was nice since they were very doable goals and it didn't completely change my whole diet up but rather worked around it to start. From there we starting developing a new meal plan that fit to my health goals and needs. All in all I really enjoyed my experience working with Melissa, she is very knowledgeable, kind, inclusive and fairly priced.
I’ve appreciated Melissa’s apparent understanding of anatomy and how to flow through postures in a way that optimizes alignment and breath work. Her instruction is consistently eloquent and appropriately focused on the mental and physical integration that make my yoga practice both challenging and rewarding. After a few yoga sessions with Melissa, I became more aware of my postures in other Vinyasa and Ashtanga classes, during which I had previously taken a more aggressive or sometimes even uncomfortable approach. With Melissa’s instruction and example I have been able to adjust my approach. I am able to progress in my practice when I come from a foundation of balance, patience and stability rather than a forceful attempt to get to an expected expression of a posture. This has been not only a physical adjustment but also mental. These lessons penetrate more than just my practice on the yoga mat. I find myself craving more postural comfort in every moment of my life, whether I’m sitting at work, walking to the store or eating dinner. I’ve also learned to take a more gentle internal voice with myself. I’ve tried to incorporate more self-patience and gratitude towards myself as a result of my yoga practice and instruction from Melissa. I would absolutely recommend Melissa’s class or private instruction to anyone looking for a well-rounded, rejuvenating yoga experience.
I had never done yoga with an instructor before, just random sessions at home, watching a video. When I met Melissa, she talked to me about yoga and good nutrition with such knowledge and passion I knew I had to step it up and start working with a professional. I learned so much from Melissa and she made class fun. She was a good teacher and was continuously giving good feedback and kept me motivated throughout the class. My flexibility increased a great deal and it always made me feel great afterwards. It reduced my stress and was the “go to” activity for me to become centered again whenever I got off track. I lost weight, had increased energy, less aches and pains and reduced injury. I think Melissa’s passion for both yoga and nutrition was readily noticeable. You know she enjoys what she is doing and sharing her knowledge. Just try it, you will not be disappointed.
In the past few years, I often found myself with a strong desire to learn Yoga. With every intention of giving it a try, I purchased a Groupon. Out of some sort of fear or anxiety, I felt a hesitation and let the deal expire without ever going. I told myself instead I would go to the Yoga classes at my gym, and again I never went. Then I connected with Melissa and found the joy I always thought Yoga could bring me. She partners her extensive knowledge with a serenity that can’t be matched in any other setting. Each session brings more peace and fulfillment to my life. I have since realized that what I was looking for was a more intimate setting to connect with Yoga as a way of life, not just a fad. I continually learn new things about myself and the practice, about different positions and how they connect us with ourselves, each other and the earth. And being able to connect with Melissa has brought that much more meaning to it. She shares a gift with me that not everyone has the privilege of receiving, but one that everyone deserves. I would highly recommend that anyone allow themselves this gift.
