More About Coach Matthew

I have been coaching sports since I graduated college for 5 years ago. Basketball for 5 years, cross country for a year, and volleyball for a year. Due to the lack of popularity of wrestling in the city of Philadelphia, I haven't had the opportunity to coach wrestling in the team context but have had the opportunity to coach many wrestlers individually. I started coaching wrestling on CoachUp this fall 2015 and have seen improvement and success in all of my wrestlers. Most of the wrestlers I am working with started as a 500 wrestler or worse and quickly improved to place in league tournaments and go onto more challenging tournaments like MAWA and PAJW tournaments advancing to states. Unfortunately, wrestling practices have a limited number of coaches for sometimes over 40 wrestlers, which isn't enough attention to correct bad habits and bad technique to make improvements in the sport. Through private one-on-one or small group wrestling sessions, I can see an improve in technique, confidence, and finishes on a per match basis since I started working with each wrestler. Going to my wrestlers matches or having parents record the match allows me to see where improvements can be made for the session the following week and prepare the wrestler for success in their next match.

Ranked #1 in the nation and #1 in the state of PA for wrestling coaching on CoachUp.

I have 10 years (K-9th) of wrestling experience and filled my room with over 20 first place finish trophies and a few 2nd and 3rd place finishes as well. In larger tournaments on the east coach, I have a 3rd place finish in the Tournament of Champions in Columbus, Ohio, two 3rd place finishes in the PA Junior Wrestling Tournament, and a 3rd and 4th place finish in the MAWA Eastern National Tournament.

Most sessions, I will review match film before the session to look for areas to improve and grow as a wrestler. If you are setting up a first session, some videos of matches will help me see where your son is currently with technique. This is a great place to start for a more productive first session to aim for immediate improvement on the mat. On going videos will only help me cater each session to what the wrestler needs to work on for better results on the mat. Unless instructed by the client to work on something different, I spend the majority of the session work on those areas for improved performance in the following matches. After or during the film, I will give the wrestlers a warm-up that will challenge their cardio and strength to improve in those areas, then begin the wrestling instruction.

For wrestlers in 7th grade or older, I do recommend workouts being longer than an hour to incorporate more cardio, strength training into the session. Wrestling and being in shape/strong go hand in hand when performing at higher levels. In groups of 3 or more, I tend to recommend workouts more than 1 hour so each wrestler can have their time to work on technique. This allows me to spend time with each wrestler and work on their technique and introduce new moves. You may contact me regarding group wrestling or wrestling partners for sessions.

Whether you need work from neutral with take downs, tie-ups, take down defense, stance, escapes from bottom, or break downs, turns, tilts, leg wrestling, or finishes from the top, I have easy to learn moves based on the style of wrestling I was taught that might not be taught at wrestling practices at all. Some of these techniques are very effective on the mat and help the wrestlers improve and get a more favorable result in their upcoming match.

Coach Matt did an Amazing job with my son! My son, having played for over 6 years, learned things that he's not be taught. His skills are improving with every session and his confidence in his ability and self really shows. I can't thank Coach Matt enough for his attention to the details, great workouts and insightful feedback. I highly recommend Coach Matt for training!

Matt was wonderful with my 12 year old son and his friend today. My son is a bit timid but likes to play basketball. In just one session Matt was patient and really took the time to get him to understand the fundamentals. I look forward to seeing what future lessons help develop.

We just had our first session with Coach Matt! He was phenomenal. He took the time to really evaluate my son, lean what his goals are and progress was made right from the start. Coach Matt took time to learn about my child before our work together as well. He went above and beyond to explain the drills my son can work on outside of the coaching sessions. My son thinks he is awesome! Thanks Coach Matt!!

Matt is easy to work with, easy to communicate with, good at coaching, makes you feel comfortable. Recommended. I’ve only done once but I think your skills will improve if you use him.

Wonderful experience training with coach Matthew.Very knowledgeable and professional.

I am really satisfied with my decision to have my 7 yr old son train with Coach Matt. He is incredibly thorough in his feedback and provides a phenomenal fundamental foundation for kids trying who love playing basketball. I’ve seen marked improvement in my sons playing and Coach Matt does a great job of keeping it loose and fun. He covers everything from shooting technique to dribbling/ball skills and scoring. I would highly recommend Coach Matt for any age.

My 10 year old daughter just finished her second basketball session with Coach Matt. In just 2 sessions, we have seen a huge improvement! She’s dribbling better, making more baskets, has better form, and is learning the triple threat position. Coach Matt has been great with her. He challenges her during the session and even gives her drills to do at home.

If your looking for someone who is knowledgeable about the game, cares about the details, and will push you and keep you on your toes book him.

Coach Mathew is a great coach. We all liked his sincerity, dedication and love for the game. It is just my son’s 2nd coaching with Mathew and my son likes to learn basketball from him. It is very difficult to please my son and I am glad my son wants to come for more practices with coach Mathew. Only when a person follows or teaches what he is passionate about, they can show this much dedication. We are very happy with the coach.

Coach Matt was great with my son. He took time to evaluate him, ask him what he thought his strengths were and his weakness were and what he wanted to improve on. His drills during his session was great and my son is so excited to practice these drills at home. We will definitely continue with Coach Matt

Coach Matt was great! We could see the progress in our daughter after only one session. She's very excited for her next lesson!

I started with a Combo-package of 2 beginner sessions: one was mainly introductory and finding out what skills to improve and the second was to build upon that with more involved drills. For my level, I needed to refine the basics of ball-handling and shooting while building good habits. Coach Matthew was able to help me develop basic drills, make them progressively harder, and also provided continued feedback through text throughout the process. I will be looking into future sessions with Coach Matthew.

We have had two sessions.....my boys are 7 and 9. Matt has been great with them. Getting ready to book my next 2pack!

Coach Matthew was great! He really took his time to get to know my soon during the first session. He was helpful in determining what my son needed to really work on to become a better wrestler.

Coach Matt has been great with working with our son who just began wrestling this year. He has been working on technique and stamina to complement what our son is doing in his club. After just 2 sessions we have seen an improvement in skill and confidence in our son.

Coach Matt made a huge impression on both me and my son at our first session. He asked for input on my son's strengths and weaknesses as well as the goals my son had for the upcoming basketball season, then tailored the session using this info. The training session was extremely well planned and organized with no wasted time. Coach Matt also provided detailed feedback on my son's game after the session as well as areas to work on between sessions. By the end of the second session, my son had already noticed improvement on his jumper and dribble attack moves. We would highly recommend Coach Matt to anyone serious about improving their game and ready to put in work.

Coach Matt is an excellent coach. My son's are ages 7 and 5. He was very engaging with them. He did drills that was challenging for them but not overwhelming. I asked if they liked it and it was a resounding yes. After our experience I'd recommend Coach Matt

Coach Matt did a great job analyzing what my son needed to work on to improve his game and then showing him drills to focus on those things. Did a good job working to his age as well. Followed up afterwards with feedback & drill reminders. Would recommend him.

Matthew is great. My son loves working with him. Keeps him moving and does great drills.

Coach Matt has been awesome so far. Def good with the kids and has solid coaching drills. My son is learning more and more each session and enjoying every minute of it.

He has great patience and explain exercises well and pushes me to my limit.

Matt is a good coach! Alex was hoping to find a indoor place for practice but they had first session in a park. Other than that we are happy with the coach!

Very productive and professional

Coach Matt is very knowledgeable, he went into detail about working out including workouts on my own and diet. Coach Matt is easy to contact and makes himself available if I have any questions about workouts or food choices. He always explains why he thinks which option is best for me. In two workouts, I feel an improvement in the areas I want to work on and my confidence level has increased greatly. I enjoyed training with Coach Matt and would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their fitness.

This was my first time working with a personal trainer. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was hoping that coach Matthew and I would work well with one another since it was my first time having help train. I reached out to him because I felt myself slacking in certain areas and figured I could use the help. After reviewing several other trainers; I felt that coach Matthew possessed most of the qualities I was looking for in a coach. The first session we had; coach Matthew introduced me to routines that worked out areas of my body that I had ignored for quite some time. That aspect of his training was well appreciated and also reminded me why I wanted a personal trainer to begin with.

I also had the opportunity to use equipment I've shied away from in the gym when working alone. Matthew also pays close attention to body-form, which is very crucial when it comes to safety and seeing results. I always felt confident with every routine he threw at me. Coach Matthew's workouts have been challenging, but rewarding.

I've also struggled with dieting and after explaining to Matthew my daily diet; the next day I received a message from him requesting that I send him a list of the foods I've eaten that day. (That's not a part of the plan I purchased.) I was shocked that he would go a little out of the way to ensure my goals were being met. Coach Matthew has also given me some basic recipes that would also help me achieve the goals I set for myself. I found his suggestions very helpful because I often struggle with knowing what's ok and what's not. I went into training with coach Matthew not expecting too much, but he has shown me that he does not believe in job titles and will go beyond what his profile says. That's someone I would work with time and time again.

Excellent basketball coach!

Coach Matthew is great! After a few email exchanges about what I was looking to accomplish for my son, Matt came up with a plan that will help him during the Crew (rowing) season and convert to lifting weights during the summer. He spent time on the phone to cover the ice breaker part of the conversation and made to the gym ready to go.

Provided a no excuse workout which needs no equipment at all and will continue to work with at the gym until they develop a solid 7 day routine. Looking forward to him working with my son even more.

Thanks Matt,
Derek

Coach Matt is an excellent teacher. He works with his students every second of the scheduled time. My son has learned many new skills and is excited about using them in his next practice session with the team.

Matt is a great coach, Daniel feels confident, engaged and excited about the sessions with Matt, he had a great experience, Matt quickly established a real connection with Daniel, he identified his current level and adjusted his pace to align with it, this allows Daniel to enjoy the sessions and feel in control of his progress, I am very pleased with Matt's coaching style and so is Daniel.
