More About Coach Matt
Thanks for considering me to help you make the most of your running. With over 30 years of personal running experience and over 20 years of coaching runners I will help you maximize the time and effort you put into your training and racing. I have coached over 6,000 runners of all abilities from stone cold beginners to hundreds of Boston Marathon and 5 Olympic Trials Marathon qualifiers.
I like to start with a Runner Profile form to learn about your running, health, and personal history and then meet by phone or in person to discuss your goals and the rationale behind my coaching. From there I will post workouts to an online log and depending on the coaching package you choose will update as the season progresses. What I offer is very flexible to meet your needs and I offer group workouts in the Indianapolis area that are free of charge to private coaching clients.
It was clear very early that my running talent was not going to take me too far. I began high school as the 23rd best on a team of 23. Through help of teammates and coaches I improved enough over 4 years to run small time college cross country. My interest in training and coaching grew out of experimenting with methods to make me faster. Eventually I did run 33:59 for 10K, 1:17:30 for half marathon, and 2:55:25 for the marathon. I found the talent I lacked in my own running I did have for coaching. I began coaching at the high school level in 1989 and then started my coaching business, Personal Best Training in 1991. I have developed core group of runners in my Indianapolis based running club and coach others throughout the country. You can see a few of the details in my "Coaching Experience" section.
Typically I begin working with a new client by having them complete a Runner Profile which covers running, health, and personal information to give me a clear view of the athlete. From there we meet in person or by phone depending on location to cover the profile information and the reasons behind how I coach and the workouts I write. If someone lives in the Indianapolis area I offer group training runs on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Workouts are given through an online log in 2-4 week blocks. As we near the end of the block I review the log and adjust the plan going forward into the next block. With an hourly plan we can meet or discuss training and racing as needed and with a 3, 6, or 12 month plan there is unlimited consultation. I do meet with people for workouts but that is only on an hourly basis as desired by the client.
