I’ve coached a medalist at the D1 State meet in every running and jumping event, except for the mile, though I only had one season as a distance coach.

Medals I’ve coached:
119 individual and 39 relay medals at the Division 1 State meet
35 individual and 18 relay medals at the All-State meet
7 individual and 10 relay medals at New England Championships
3 All-American performances

Champions I’ve coached:
35 individual and 22 relay Merrimack Valley Conference Champions
20 individual and 11 relay Division 1 State meet Champions
4 individual and 6 relay All-State meet Champions
3 individual and 4 relay New Englands Champions
1 New Balance Outdoor Nationals Champion

Some notable performances I’ve coached:
State record at the time in indoor and outdoor boys pole vault (15’6”)
State record girls indoor and outdoor high jump relay (15’9” for both)
State record boys Swedish Medley Relay (1:59.73)
#2 MA All-Time girls 4x100m (48.01)
#4 MA All-Time indoor girls 4x200m (1:43.47)
#5 MA All-Time girls indoor 4x400m (3:55.48)
All-State Champ Boys 4x100m (42.77)
New England Champ boys 4x400m (3:19.61)
National Champion in girls high jump (5’10” jumper)

I’ve coached over 70 athletes at Andover High School that have gone on to compete collegiately.

In high school, I was varsity Cross Country and varsity Track for sprints (100m - 400m)/jumps, with an occasional 800m or mile, if the team needed it. The event where I had the most success was pole vault, where I was top 10 in the state for 3 years. I wasn’t particularly naturally gifted towards any of my events, but I put in the work to make it to varsity in all of them. I maintain that level of effort in my coaching and my learning how to become a better coach.

It would be different, depending on the event and time of year, but the primary focus would be proper technique. The kinds of drills, exercises, and workouts would be speed and power based. A session would start with a thorough warmup, then technical drills or event specific work for field events, then short sprints and/or some jumps or medicine ball throws, depending on the rest of the session. The plan is to not do reps of highly technical activities while tired, so I monitor how each rep is going to know when to end that part of the session or the session as a whole before we start repeating errors that are caused by fatigue. We will go over video so I can show the athlete what is causing the issues, and I can demonstrate or show videos of the activity being done correctly, so they know what they’re aiming for.

I’m always available to ask questions. I can help with making sprinting / jumping / running / lifting plans for any time of the year.

Client Reviews

My son had a good time during class.
Great coach!

After an entire season without progress in the long jump, my long jump improved by 30cm after just a few sessions with Mark making me one of the top 25 jumpers in the nation. His patience, clear explanations of the purpose behind each exercise, and innovative workouts have made a significant difference in my performance. Mark’s coaching style is both supportive and insightful, and I highly recommend him to athletes at any level. I look forward to continuing to work with him for years to come.

He did a wonderful job with a beginning hurdler and is expert at communicating. Huge fan.

My daughter loves Mark. She is going into her senior year and plans to run track in College. Hopefully D1. Mark has helped her confidence by reinforcing technique. He has also introduced her to new drills to help her speed and quickness. Highly recommend Mark.

Great experience - Mark had well structured sessions and was easy to communicate with.

Mark is great!

Coach Hathaway is a great coach. My daughter has always had better times after a session with Coach Hathaway. Always available for a text and my daughter looks forward to her training session. If you’re looking for someone to help your child understand/learn the sport and excel in it, Coach Hathaway is the coach you need.

Coach Mark was excellent! He was very helpful with all of my son's hurdle questions. He gave great tips on how to improve form and starts. He was truly invested in what he was saying and wanted to hear about how my son's next meet was.

Definitely happy to see
Heidi getting the kind of training that will help her improve!

Coach Mark is professional and friendly. Although my son Ben is 12 and new to the sport, coach Mark is able to relate and teach him the basics while continually advancing him. I can tell coach Mark loves his sport and is very knowledgeable with the techniques and training he provides. We look forward to the next training session.

Great work, will book again!
