More About Coach Mariel

I am an RRCA-certified Level II and USATF-certified Run Coach, and coach all levels and all ages of runners- from after-school programming for elementary students to marathon coaching for experienced adult athletes. I currently spend about 50% of my time coaching adults on-one-on, both in-person and virtually; the other 50% I work at Brooklyn Running Company, a specialty running shoe and apparel store. Since 2022, I have also worked with the American Liver Foundation, coaching a group of 25 individuals or so each year for the NYC Marathon. I also previously volunteer coached with Girls on the Run; worked with Back on My Feet (where I currently still volunteer); and led and paced group runs with RunStreet.

Primarily, I coach adult athletes looking to improve either a goal race time, or their overall fitness levels. I have coached individuals for the past seven years to run in races such as the New York City, Boston, and Chicago marathons. I create a training plan based on the individual's needs and then analyze the results throughout the process and make changes accordingly. Running should be a healthy part of an individual's life and I always account for other life accomplishments along the way as well. Along with marathon and half-marathon specific training, I also coach new runners or individuals just starting out, whether they just want to get into shape, or race their first 5km, 10km, and more!

With Back on My Feet, I coached over 20 members and 75+ fundraisers to the New York City Marathon finish line for three years (2016, 2017, 2018). I created an 18-week training plan that includes three weekly runs and one weekend long run, and some races throughout the weeks as well. We also incorporated yoga, nutrition planning, and check-in meetings to ensure our runners make it to the start (and finish) line happy, and healthy. Some of the individuals I coached were experienced marathoners, but the majority were first-time marathon runners.

I have been running 5ks since my childhood. I started racing 400m hurdles in high school and continued to run hurdles, plus the 400 and 800 as a Division III collegiate athlete, and started running Cross Country then as well. After college, I took some time off before coming back and running my first marathon in 2014. Since then I have run over 35 half, full, and ultra-marathons, including the 2017, 2019, and 2022 Boston Marathons. I have personal bests of 1:27:50 in the Half, 3:13:10 in the Full, and 7:17 in the 50-Mile. I also completed 110 miles in a 24-hour run event.

-Swarthmore College- Division III Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track- 2007-2010- focused on the 400m hurdles but also participated in the open 200m, 400m, and 800m races, as well as the 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m, and sprint and distance relays

A typical session will vary based on the client's needs- but will always include a dynamic warm-up, planned run/workout, cool-down, and basic stretch. We will focus on drills during the warm-up and strides before the cool-down. So, a session may include a 10 minute warm-up of drills and jogging, followed by 40 minutes of running, ending with a 1 mile cool-down and stretch.

I had one session with Mariel and by the end was looking forward to signing up for a 4-class package. I found her coaching style to be kind, supportive, and engaging, and it was enjoyable to talk with her during the workout.
Six month update: I've continued working with her for the last 6 months and I've made consistent progress. She is reliable, gives comprehensive feedback, and makes the hard work easier with her friendly and funny personality. Definitely would recommend her to anyone!

Mariel is AWESOME!!

She amazing so far so good just focusing on improving on my run

It was great working with coach Mariel. She was very supportive and encouraging. I had a somewhat ambitious goal, and coach Mariel created a training plan, working around my other commitments and adjusting based on progress. She shared lots of tips and provided weekly feedback for my workouts. I am looking forward to working with coach Mariel on future running projects.

Mariel listened to my history, observed my current capabilities and understood my goals. She tailored our session to my needs on the fly, and pushed me further than I would have pushed myself, which is exactly what I wanted. She's also smart, cool and upbeat, which makes chugging up an endless hill a lot more fun. Both your day and your run will be better after a session with her.

Mariel is so supportive and pragmatic! She's really helping me to rediscover my love of distance running.

Smart, enthusiastic, and identified a stride issue that's been causing me problems for years, probably. Heartily recommend!

Initial session with Mariel was great. She was very patient and provided a lot of great insight.

Mariel is thorough, patient, observational, and a great runner. Bought another session right after the first. Great follow-up information from her on drills and observations.

Coach Mariel is exactly what i need as a new runner. she has given me all the right tools to succeed with plenty of encouragement. She has prepared my training programs with a lot of feedback from me as to how i feel instead of just cookie cutter plans. I would recommend her to anyone that is looking to start or improve their running.

I have been working with Mariel for several weeks and she is an attentive coach who listens and adjusts course as necessary. She designed a half marathon plan for me and I’ve seen progress (of course, you must do your own part when not working with her). I shared 3 goals with her and I’m confident that I will meet at least two of them. Personally, I also use our sessions to ask all my questions and would urge you to do the same.

My only regret is that I didn’t start working with her sooner.

Mariel is a very positive and insightful coach. She takes the time with her clients. I signed up for the 12 weeks 1/2 marathon package and so far I have no complaint.

Coach Mariel was great! She was very attentive to my needs and helpful on giving me tips. I was nervous about running, but she started out with a slow pace which worked out great for me.
