More About Coach Kevin
I have extensive experience coaching football at both the high school and youth levels. Most recently, I served as an Assistant Football Coach at John R. Lewis High School (Fairfax County Public Schools) in Springfield, Virginia, from June 2016 to March 2021. In that role, I worked on both the Freshman and Varsity staffs, contributing across multiple areas including:
- Wide Receiver position coach
- Defensive Backs coach
- Special Teams coach
- Freshman Offensive Coordinator and play-caller
At the youth level, I have coached as a Defensive Coordinator and filled various position coach roles based on team needs. This has given me a well-rounded background in both offensive and defensive schemes, player development, and game-day strategy.
I typically work with high school athletes (freshman through varsity) and youth/middle school players, focusing on skill development, technique, teamwork, and preparing athletes for the next level of competition.
I am proficient in Microsoft Office and have additional skills in player development, film study, and coaching methodologies. While I don't hold specific industry certifications like USA Football or NFHS at this time, I stay current through hands-on experience, continuing education, and best practices in athlete training and safety.
I'm passionate about helping athletes grow both on and off the field and would be happy to discuss how my background can support your program.
My playing career was centered around football at the youth and high school levels. I competed as a student-athlete through high school, gaining valuable experience in competitive team environments that later informed my coaching approach.
I did not continue playing at the collegiate or professional level. After high school, I stayed active in the game by participating in competitive adult flag football leagues until my late 20s. I enjoyed a successful run in those leagues before stepping away due to injuries.
While I didn’t earn major collegiate or professional accolades, my playing days helped me develop a deep understanding of the game from an athlete’s perspective — including position-specific skills, teamwork under pressure, and the mental side of competition. This background has been instrumental in my ability to relate to and effectively coach players at the youth and high school levels.
I’m proud of the foundation my playing experience gave me and am now fully focused on developing the next generation of athletes through coaching.
A typical training session with me is structured, energetic, and personalized to the athlete’s age, position, and goals. Whether working with a youth player, high school athlete, or someone looking to improve for the next level, clients can expect a professional, focused, and supportive environment that emphasizes fundamentals, technique, and measurable improvement.
Session Structure (Typically 60–90 minutes):
1. Dynamic Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)
- I start every session with movement-based warm-ups to prepare the body, increase heart rate, and reduce injury risk. This includes agility ladders, mobility drills, light footwork, and position-specific activation (e.g., route running mechanics for receivers or backpedal/hip turns for defensive backs).
2. Skill & Technique Development (20–30 minutes)
- This is the core of the session. I focus heavily on proper technique and breaking down movements. Depending on the athlete’s position and needs, we work on:
-- Route running / Release techniques (for receivers)
-- Footwork, coverage angles, and ball skills (for defensive backs)
-- Special teams fundamentals (blocking, tackling angles, kicking/return positioning)
-- Offensive scheme concepts and decision-making (especially for players interested in quarterback or skill position play-calling awareness)
-- Hand placement, leverage, and tackling form for all positions
- I use a “whole-part-whole” teaching method: show the full movement, break it into parts with drills, then put it back together at full speed.
3. Situational & Competitive Drills (15–25 minutes)
- I incorporate game-like scenarios such as 1-on-1s, 7-on-7 style work, or team period simulations. This helps athletes translate individual skills into real-game situations and builds confidence under pressure.
4. Conditioning & Athletic Development (10–15 minutes)
- Position-specific speed, agility, and quickness training tailored to football demands. I emphasize quality over quantity and always tie conditioning back to football movements.
5. Cool-Down & Debrief (5–10 minutes)
- Light stretching, recovery work, and a quick review of what went well and what to focus on next. I often provide a short video analysis (using phone footage from the session) so athletes can see their progress.
My Training Philosophy:
- Technique first — Good reps build muscle memory and prevent bad habits.
- Position-specific focus while developing overall athleticism.
- Positive reinforcement combined with high standards.
- Strong emphasis on football IQ — helping athletes understand why we do things, not just how.
Sessions are adaptable based on whether it’s a private 1-on-1, small group, or team setting. I’m happy to adjust intensity and focus areas based on the athlete’s current level, upcoming games, or specific weaknesses they want to improve.
Would love to discuss how we can tailor a plan to your specific goals.
