More About Coach Kathryn

I have experience coaching at multiple levels including, middle school, high school, and collegiate. I coached the heptathletes and hurdlers at Harding University and I coached the middle and high school level hurdlers and jumpers at Harding Academy. I have competed at all of these levels. I began running track and field when I was very young in elementary school and continued on to receive a scholarship to run in college, where I ran all four years. I am currently the head middle school track and field coach at Summit Middle School. I have coached and competed in every event at some point during my career. I am extremely knowledgeable in every event, but I specialize in hurdles and jumps.

My running career began very early, because my father was a college track and field coach my whole life. Track and Field was what I knew best. In high school I received All-state and All-conference awards throughout my four years. After high school, I went on to run at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas where I received a scholarship for hurdler and finished out my four years as a Heptathlete. At Harding I was awarded All-conference and All-academic honors. I now compete in road races and I am a marathon runner.

A typical practice for my athletes begins with a thorough warm-up to make sure that their muscles are ready compete to the best of their abilities. The warm-up usually includes some jogging, drills that focus on keeping correct posture and having good foot strike on the ground, and strides that will help open up the hips and practice correct running form. When we reach the workout part of the session, I typically focus on both speed and conditioning no matter what their event is, but the ratio of speed to conditioning in the workout depends on what their event is. Also, in the workout portion of the session, I focus a lot of time on technique, because technique is a top priority when it comes to events such as, hurdling, jumping, and throwing. At the end of every session my athletes will do an easy cool down and stretch to help prevent any tight or sore muscles and to prevent injury.
