More About Coach Joseph
After a long playing career, I have coached a few different teams, and conducted extensive individual basketball training. My first official head coaching job for the Brimmer and May School's boys middle school basketball team, in Nov.-March of '16. This past spring and summer, I was head coach of the AAU basketball program Mass Elite's 17u boys team. I also worked for F.A.S.T. Athletics as a coach, where we ran sports programs within schools all over Boston. The most rewarding form of coaching I've experienced has definitely been individual training, which is why I'm so glad I found out about Coach Up! I have trained high school and middle school basketball players (boys and girls) throughout the Boston area; my clientele has ranged from elite high school players getting ready to compete at the college level, to a group of 6th graders who had never touched a basketball before.
I played varsity high school basketball for 4 years at the Northfield Mount Hermon School (NMH), where the school consistently ranks among the top 5 prep teams in the nation. In 2010, during my junior year, I was the starting lead guard and helped guide us to the National Prep School Championship game, where we lost by 1 point to Brewster Academy. To get to that final game, we had to face, and beat the Hargrave Military Academy, a school which hadn't lost a game in several years and was comprised of 10+ DIvision 1 players. During my senior year in 2011, I graduated as the school's all time leader in wins and was a McDonald's All-American Nominee. I went on to play DIvision 1 college basketball at Brown University. My biggest highlight during my time at Brown was when we beat a top 25 ranked Providence College team in 2012 during my sophomore year.
I don't really believe in "positions" in basketball, especially at the younger ages. I believe positions only need to be broken down as broadly as a team's "ball handers, wings, and bigs,"--if at all-- rather than the typical "1-5." Being pigeon holed into a position is far more detrimental than beneficial in efforts to improve one's game. During all of my workouts, unless specifically advised otherwise by a client, I will conduct workouts in an effort to produce complete basketball players. I would say my explicit expertise definitely lies within the realm of a lead guard--specifically ball handling, shooting, and defense. But as I said, whereas some coaches of younger players will put a kid who is much bigger than his peers automatically as a center, and only have them work on "big men drills," I think it's invaluable for every player to first be able to handle the ball. Every player involved in the workout will essentially have a ball in their hands at all times, save for when working on defense. But in this sense, the positionless-ness will continue, as smaller players will become accustomed to playing post defense, and bigger players will work on guarding the ball out on the perimeter. I have hundreds of drills ready to help anyone reach their desired level of skill or success in the sport!

Joe is very patient with my son who is just beginning to learn the basics. Very good pace for beginners to master the fundamentals.

Joe is a great coach who really knows his basketball. He stresses consistently executing the fundamental skills of the game. I highly recommend him and will be booking more sessions in the future.
Michele (CoachUp client)
He did a great job observing him and then giving him feedback about doing a few things differently. He was also quite patient when my grandson resisted trying on new things. My grandson thought he already knew how to do something but was delighted to see that the new way expanded his options for playing the game. Unfortunately, we were not able to complete the session because my grandson got sick.
