More About Coach John
I am currently a strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer working with St. Edward's high school, as well as a number of strength athletes at a gym in Cleveland. I have nearly completed my bachelor's degree in Exercise Science through the University of Akron, and will be working on becoming a strength and conditioning coach at the collegiate level.
I currently compete at the national level in strongman contests, and occasionally partake in local, state or national level powerlifting competitions. In high school I played football and threw shotput and discus, breaking a school record in the process while throwing shotput.
Realistically, every athlete has universal demands, as well as demands specific to their position or sport. For example, general strength and conditioning would first be addressed, as well as a heavy concentration on corrective exercises, core, and balance. Some sports and positions in sports have a higher demand for certain things than others, and those would be addressed in other sessions, or as part of our session, worked in with general athletic training. Why such a focus on overall strength and conditioning? Being athletic- look at the Olympics. They're great at their sports, but you could place nearly any of them into any other sport and they'd still do great. Why the corrective, core, and balance exercises? All sports have heavy demands placed on balance, posture, and frequently an athlete will be become, simply put, out of sorts, so corrective measures are required- think of all of the torque placed on a baseball pitcher's arm and shoulder. If that's not taken care of, you're risking injury, so I'd be addressing potential injury concerns.
