More About Coach Dr John

I am a board certified health professional trained at the University of Southern California under the direction of Tom House, an international authority on quarterback throwing performance, health, conditioning, and recovery. Dr House and the USC staff have created 3DQB where NFL (Brees, Brady, Pryor) and college quarterbacks (Big Ten) train to throw farther, more accurately, and safely. This program has developed throwing and conditioning protocols for quarterbacks that help performance, accuracy, distance, and emphasizes health.

As a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the ASMI I keep up to date with new information in sports performance and rehabilitation medicine. We use velocity detection and wearable technology to compute arm speed and throwing stress on the arm, which can inform QBs of potential for throwing safer, faster, and lower the risk of injury.

Our focus is simple: To be a successful QB at any level of the game requires you to be in top physical condition, mentally tough, and emotionally calm. Balancing the physical and mental demands of this position are the hardest part of being a QB. That's why we focus heavily on specific fitness programs, drills, sports psychology, and nutrition for QBs that addresses their specific throwing needs and leads to better performance and throwing safely. I also have experience in rehabilitation of athletes, particularly those who are recovering from shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip problems.

I currently have 12 years experience with QB throwing programs and receive re-certification in these programs, such that we can bring the latest sports medicine-based information on the safest and most efficient way to throw a football.

All of our programs start off with an assessment of the player's shoulder and elbow health, muscle strength, stability, body flexibility, genetic velocity, arm velocity and stress, and point-in-time velocity. You will then receive recommendations on improving throwing performance and health. Subsequently, a player can choose to enter either an in-season or off-season program. In either program, each athlete will:

In-season program: We address short term needs: What are the most important throwing problems confronting this player right now? We identify and correct these issues and integrate a micro-conditioning program to keep the player healthy and maintain a consistent performance level in-season.

Off-season program: We go long-term: What fitness and skills does a player need to continue to play and move onto the upper levels of football? For this, we provide a comprehensive conditioning/fitness program to improve velocity and control over the long term. We then provide drills that teach the player how to throw more effectively and safely. The player then transitions into an in-season program to maintain the benefits developed from the off-season program.

In either program, each athlete will:

A) Understand where they need to focus physically to increase their potential;
B) Learn skill-based drills they can do to help improve their mechanics and accuracy, and
C) Get throwing time and be evaluated for mechanical inefficiencies.

All players who have completed either an in- or off-season QB program are then eligible for "tune-ups" (short 1-2 session format) where we address any problems that occur over time in the player's throwing signature, accuracy, or velocity.

If a player has physical issues or other immediate problems (i.e., injuries) that need to be addressed, then we strongly recommend that the player address these issues first before entering into any training program. All participants must have medical clearance before participating in our program.

Client Reviews

Coach Dr John worked with my son today and I was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. My son is a D1 pitcher and he cannot believe how much knowledge he obtained from Dr. John in one meeting and he looks forward to working with him again. I highly recommend Dr John to any player looking to stay healthy and become a better pitcher.

Coach provided a thorough and honest evaluation of my son's current physical status and potential pitching level. We will be continuing with further instruction to help my son enjoy his senior season.

My son is working with Dr. John and into his first session is already impressed and excited for his 2nd session. His knowledge and expertise is refreshing and eye opening! We are glad we found him and look forward to a great future and relationship as well the opportunity to learn more!

Very knowledgeable, and the initial meeting was very beneficial to help my 14 year old grandson improve on his pitching technique, and very important - his warming up and stretching exercises before a game. We learned more in this session than all the years of training since T-Ball. We look forward to working with Dr. John E. with the goal of helping my grandson improve this part the game. I highly recommend his expertise.

Dr John first evaluated then gave my 12 yr old son two coaching sessions. Even though he didnt pitch in the first session and only did drills, my sons pitching form improved (still a long way to go but, progress) and the velocity and accuracy of his pitches increased significantly. He taught some grips for a natural sidearm pitcher which work. They were totally different than what other "over-the-top" coaches had taught previously and werent really working due to my sons arm always coming back to its natural position.

He gave my son specific exercises and a warm up routine to do before pitching to help prevent injury. Because Dr John is a real Dr, he was able to explain the reasons behind arm injuries clearly, especially in youth players, to help me understand the issues. He explained the anatomy and growth factors that need to be considered and taught my son the correct motions to use.

The second session involved drills and then lots of pitching. His motion looked totally different by the end of the session; dramatically faster and more balanced. It will be work to maintain but hes got the idea of where he needs to go. Since hes 12, the theory is that he will develop good habits early.

I highly recommend Dr John. He is more expensive than other coaches but I think his advice is worth it. He related well to my son and hopefully, the sessions have decreased the likelyhood of injury and given him a good base to improve his pitching. Now its all up to doing the work.

Amazing coach

My sons experience with Coach John continues to grow. We can see the benefits of all that Coach John is teaching him. More importantly john not only explains what exercises to do he explains why they need to be done for total body balance. It's been very beneficial and has carried over into his other sports as well

I wanted to thank you and everyone at the NPA Camp for such an enjoyable & educational week. I don't think it would have been possible for us to have any better experience. Everyone on the team spent so much time educating my son to help him get better. All Chris kept saying was how great of a time he was having, how much he is learning and can we come back next year. Each of the coaches added so much to the learning process, which is a testament to Tom's principals. I was so impressed, even with Tom's very busy schedule he was able to meet with everyone including the parents to make sure they learned as much as they could. I felt his conversation at the start of each day were amazing. I thanked Tom but I honestly didn't know what to say when Tom offered to have the NPA coach on the east coast (John Evans) personally call him to discuss my son to make sure he was trained correctly. It really meant the world to both of us...Thank you again and continued success with your program.
