More About Coach Joe
I have coached high school boys and girls, Junior College men and women, and D1 college men and women all in California. During my 35 years of coaching, I worked at Exeter Union High School, Exeter, Redwood High School, Visalia, College of the Sequoias Visalia, and California State University, Fresno. For the last three years, I have worked as a private coach at the high school level. I have obtained USATF Coaching certificates for Level One and Level Two in sprints, hurdles and relays, and Level Two and Three in distance/cross country. My accomplishments for Cross Country include: 11 boy and 10 girls high school League championships; two boy’s teams and two girl’s teams 1st place at the CIF Central Section; one boy finish 9th at NXN and one boy finish 1st at Western Regional Championships. At the University level I had one men’s team place 3rd at the WAC Championships. In Track, I had one boy at 3200, one boy at 1600, and one boy at 800 win high school CIF Central Section champion titles. University level I coached one man at intermediate hurdles; one man at 1500; and one woman at 1500 win WAC champion titles.
I ran in high school and was a California State Meet Qualifier my junior and senior year. I ran 1:53.8 in 800 meters. I competed at Exeter Union High School, Exeter, CA. Inducted in the Exeter High School Hall of Fame for track, three years MVP in track. Played football and lettered varsity junior and senior year. My junior year we went undefeated, 11-0.
I believe in year round speed work, even if it is just fast sprints. One of my workouts is called the COE workout, named after Sebastian Coe. It is a 200-300 with first a 200, then 220, then 240, then 260 then, 280 then, 300. All with three minutes recovery jog. Times depend on the athletes all mile and all out 400. It starts out at a mile pace for the 200 then increase slightly until the 300 ends up at all out speed. I supplement with plyometrics, hurdle drills, and foot and ankle strengthening exercises.
