More About Coach Jim
I enjoy sharing training strategies from marathon champions that have guided me; Amby Burfoot, Bill Rodgers, Uta Pippig, Catherina McKiernan, Johnny Kelley as well as many other friends! Whether you are hoping to complete a marathon or improve your personal best, I will navigate you through the process. I have successfully converted runners from mid pack "jolly joggers" to qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I am currently certified as a Connecticut Interscholastic Coach. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Girls on The Run.
Received "Inspirational Runner" award presented by Hartford Marathon Foundation. Top regional master runner. At 50 years old I ran a 1:23 half marathon and 3:02 marathon. Eight-time Boston Marathon finisher. I serve on two boards for running related nonprofit organizations (John Kelley Memorial Fund and Girls on The Run).
Initially, a runner's goals are assessed. Then an individualized training block is developed. This program is governed by current fitness level, age, past injuries and desired finish time. I enjoy supporting runners in all aspects of our sport.

Coach Jim is the BEST!! This Spring, I worked with him for three sessions and he helped me to prepare and run three half marathons in 3 consecutive months (April May and June). He helped me to set and achieve an ambitious personal goal for each race, and - bonus! - I received age division awards in two of them (I’m 53)! I cannot praise him highly enough. He is very knowledgeable, attentive, caring and encouraging. He is the real deal as coaches go, and I can think of no better ambassador for the sport of running. For one of our coaching sessions he ran 5 miles with me in the pouring rain debriefing my last race experience. It was a lot of fun and further demonstrates his unparalleled commitment to showing up and being your coach regardless of the weather! If you want to improve your running performance and grow in your love of this great sport, I am confident that Coach Jim Roy can help you!!

Jim has tremendous knowledge and is extremely helpful. He has helped me train for two Marathons including the Boston Marathon. Jim is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with. He really took the time to cater a program well suited to my objectives, and provided unique insight on how to improve and succeed. Despite being a very accomplished runner, Jim is extremely humble and demonstrates a deep dedication to the runners he supports. Best of all, he is a great guy and a real pleasure to work with. I would strongly recommend Jim as a resource for runners at all levels.

Coach Jim was great! In my first session, he gave me numerous pointers to help me get my BQ. I left that session confident and energized to move to the next level! Thanks very much Coach Jim!!!

Kris-Anne Kane, Top Regional Runner (Testimonial)
I was a competitive runner for over 25 years, racing mostly 5K-10K distances. Finishing a marathon was never on my radar. But Jim saw something in me that I never thought was possible. Listening to his sound advice and encouragement, I ran the Hartford Marathon. I placed 4th in the 50-54 age division AND qualified for the Boston Marathon. I was more than 27 minutes below my Boston qualifying standard! Jim has a passion for helping others develop self-confidence and realize their goals. Most importantly, he teaches how to enjoy the journey. Jim is the perfect coach. He will guide and inspire you.
Amby Burfoot, winner, the 1968 Boston Marathon Former editor of Runner's World Magazine and author of many running books (Testimonial)
Jim and I were lucky to learn directly from one of the world's great runners and coaches, John J. Kelley. There's little Jim doesn't know and understand about training and coaching others. Most importantly, he shares Kelley's best qualities: energy, encouragement, enthusiasm, compassion, and recognition that we are all different and may need different paths to success. Jim has all the tools to help you reach your running goals.
Spyros Barres; Over 50 U.S. National Champion; Marathon, Half Marathon & 10,000 meters (Testimonial)
Jim has a passion for helping fellow runners, and it shows! Between coaching and volunteering for Girls on The Run, a non-profit that promotes fitness to the next generation, Jim has inspired countless runners to enjoy our sport and improve their running. He follows in the footsteps of his coach, Olympic marathon great John J. Kelley. It’s no wonder Jim was selected to be an Inspirational Runner for The Hartford marathon and half marathon. He continues to inspire so many, myself included!
Linda C., 51 Psychotherapist and Boston Marathon Finisher (Testimonial)
Jim is the best running coach I've ever known, and the impact he's had on my performance is truly amazing. His experience and knowledge of running spans decades, and his enthusiasm for the sport is contagious, motivating and energizing. Most importantly, his coaching produces results. Within 2 years of training with him, I found myself running PRs in the 5K, half marathon and marathon distances and (for the first time in my life) I began winning age division awards in races. He helped me knock 33 minutes off my marathon PR to achieve my lifelong dream of qualifying for the Boston Marathon!! If you are looking to achieve your personal best in running, Jim Roy is the coach for you
