More About Coach Jesse

My coaching experience includes coaching college-aged track & field and cross country athletes at a top university in Colorado from 2008-2015. I helped coach one men's national championship team in NCAA DII cross country and 12 other men's and women's top 4 podium team finishes in NCAA DII cross country.

I also coached for 7 seasons of Indoor and Outdoor track and field at the NCAA DII level helping athletes win national titles in the 3000m Steeplechase (twice), 5000m and 10000m (twice). I coached the women's NCAA DII national record holder in the 10000m (32:49). The teams that I coached had numerous individuals finish in the top 3 in their events and many times ours teams finished in the top 4 nationally.

I have coached several sub-elite and elite athletes post collegiately. I have also coached all levels of runners including masters runners that got into running later in life and do it for fun and enjoyment. My experience ranges all the way from male to female, rec athletes to top level elites in distances from the 800m to Marathon.

I have coached males athletes to the following times:
800m - 1:48.50
1500m - 3:48.06
3000m Steeplechase - 8:35.00
5000m - 13:51.42
10000m - 28:23.54
Half Marathon - 1:05:15
Marathon - N/A

I have coached females athletes to the following times:

1500m - 4:30.26
3000m Steeplechase - 10:24.52

10000m - 32:49.92 (national NCAA Division II record)
Half Marathon - 1:15:18
Marathon - 2:45:39

I was part of one national championship cross country team in college at the NCAA DII level and also teams that finished 2nd and 3rd nationally in cross country. I was also part of a combined national championship team at the NJCAA level. After college I ran post-collegiately for the Boulder Running Company/Adidas team for 3 years. Currently I am a member of the Kansas City Smoke elite development team here in Kansas City.

My personal best are as follows:

Client Reviews

Excellent Coach, Jesse brings a wealth of knowledge from his coaching and competitive experience with tremendous results. Always available, he provides expert, tailored instruction for your running needs.

Coach Chettle is definitely the person to go for fast improvement on your running. Originally I had the plan of running a 2 miler in 16 minutes or less in a matter of two months. Thus, being able to maintain an 8 minute pace per mile. However, in just the first week I made massive improvements under his wing. Even before the month ended I was able to run a 1.5 mile in 11:45, ahead of schedule. Ultimately though, your success still depends on you the client. Coach Chettle is the man with the plan and you just have to do what he tells you to do. Outstanding coach.

After years of self training and seeing little improvement, I reluctantly pursued a coach. It turned out to be a wonderful decision and Jesse was just the guy to turn to. His years of experience as a coach and a runner himself allowed him to quickly identify the things I was missing in my training. His approach is very personal and geared directly to your style and goals. With just a few small tweeks, Jesse improved my half marathon time from 1:22 to 1:17. I would recommend him to anyone looking to reach a running goal!

I was a distance runner for Western State Colorado University from 2009 until 2014.  Jesse Chettle was one of my cross country coaches.  After graduation, I stopped competing and ran sporadically.  This past fall, I decided I wanted to race again and signed up for a half marathon scheduled for February 2016. I had no idea how to kick start my training to get ready for the race.  I contacted Jesse just 10 weeks before my half marathon.  Jesse got to work right away. He created a plan that would help me achieve my race goal and fit within my work schedule. Each week, Jesse sent me my workouts.  These plans told me exactly what to do each day and included pace, mileage, and strength. Jesse was always available to answer any questions or concerns. By the end of my training plan, I felt ready and confident to race.  I knew that Coach Chettle had provided me with all of the tools I needed to race and succeed.  My half marathon went well! I will continue to work with Jesse.  I am confident that as long as I stick with Coach Chettle, I will continue to improve and reach my running goals!
Jesse was my coach for 2 years at Western State Colorado University. I had always been a pretty mediocre runner with average times, and some potential that could easily be overlooked. Jesse does a great job in believing in every ounce of potential an athlete has. One summer I was training hard but honestly too hard, and it resulted in a stress fracture. Jesse didn't give up on me but rather constructed an amazing rehabilitation program. The program included strength training, and various cross training workouts (bike/pool). For anyone who is restricted due to injury to modalities such as: stationary bike and aqua jogging it is almost unbearable to stay motivated. However, Jesse continued to motivate me, and his passion led me to totally buy into his personalized training plan. With only 3 weeks of real running post injury I ran a huge PR in the 800 right out of the gates 1:55 (previously 1:57). The rest of season just snowballed after to similar performances from 8:42 to a 8:25 3k time, 1500 from 3:55 to a 3:51 and an All-American performance in the DMR. Many thanks to Jesse's belief in listening to his athletes. As he is great at personalizing his training according to not only his thoughts, but what the athlete feels. Often athlete's input is overlooked in an NCAA and other running atmospheres.
I ran under Jesse Chettle at Western State Colorado University for my first two years of college. At that time, I was new to collegiate running and had a limited knowledge of the sport. Chettle was the assistant coach and took a personal interest in the younger athletes. He would spend time with us individually at practice and outside of practice to make sure we were making the right decisions as runners and students. Many times he went out of his way to accommodate the athletes. I remember in particular that, as a sophomore, I had to wake up at 530 in the morning in order to squeeze a two-a-day into my schedule. Coach Chettle, without having to, would wake up as well and keep me company on my runs. It was obvious to all of us that he cared about his athletes and wanted to see our progress. Chettle has spent many years being part of the running community, both as a runner and a coach. I’m confident that his experience within the sport and his passion for running had a positive impact on my life when I was training under him.
I feel lucky to have had the experience of being coached by Coach Jesse Chettle. The knowledge and care that Coach Chettle provides an athlete is unique and something that can transform an athlete’s dream to belief and then to reality. Coach Chettle took me under his wing in my developmental years as a college athlete at Western State Colorado University, and with his help I was able to become a 10x All American, break several school records, and also break the NCAA Div II 10,000 meter record. To this day, I still refer back to him for advice and am grateful to hold him very dear not only as a coach, but also a friend.
Coach Chettle is a great coach who I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to have worked with. He has helped me make significant improvements in my running performance. Much of which, I would attribute to his attention to detail and his ability to personalize training to the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Jesse does an excellent job at tailoring training around what the athlete can handle as far as staying healthy and performing their best, this is a very exceptional skill for a coach to have. Personally, I have had difficulties with consistency due to injury, Jesse knew when I was pushing to hard in my workouts, and we made a plan to adjust, to help make sure I returned to the level that I could be successful at. He is very insightful in how he can diagnostically assess training. This derives from his incredible knowledge and experience in running. Jesse is also a great coach, as he sees potential in his athletes, and wants them to flourish. When I began running collegiately I was not a very competitive runner, Jesse took the time to help me individually, and gave me the support and encouragement that has helped me immeasurably. I will always be very grateful for this. This just speaks to Jesse’s devotion to the sport and his uplifting attitude. Jesse is a great coach for runners who are looking for a personal and incredibly experienced coach who will help them run to their potential.
I had the privilege to be one of the many athletes coached by Jesse Chettle while he was at Western State. He has a distinct passion for helping athletes reach their potential both mentally and physically. Specifically, I benefited the most from his constructive feedback I received after races that helped me prepare for future races. Jesse has years of experience in coaching a wide variety of athletes and has helped them have breakthroughs in their running careers. I highly recommend Jesse because he doesn't believe in 'cookie cutter' training plans but rather coaches to meet the needs of each individual.
After five years of running collegiately and being coached by Jesse I knew wanted to continue running but knew I couldn’t do it without a coach. I reached out to Jesse and without hesitation he was on-board with helping me train for my first marathon! One of my favorite things that Jesse does is involve me in the training plan. It’s not a one-size-fits all plan; he takes the time to listen to your opinions, learn your background, and help you map out realistic goals in order to make a training plan that is specific to you. Throughout the marathon build-up Jesse was very good at communicating, giving encouragement, asking how big workouts went, how I was feeling, and would adjust future workouts as needed based on my feedback. When the marathon rolled around I was as fit and confident as I had ever been. I ended up winning my debut marathon in 2:45:39 (just 39 seconds shy of the Olympic trials qualifying time) and since then Jesse has helped me set a 3 1/2 minute PR in the half marathon and is preparing me for my 2nd marathon in January of 2016. I have been coached by Jesse for the past 6 years and have never met someone who genuinely wants his athletes to be the best they can be and often times he believes in me more than I believe in myself. Thanks Jesse!
Every race I run, every time I cross that line this guy will be there every step of the way. Don't think I can ever pay you fully back. Keep your eyes on this guy, wherever he ends up, he'll be making moves soon enough. Thanks for making me believe, Chettle. Godspeed.
