More About Coach Jake

In the last 10 years as the Head Wrestling Coach at Smoky Hill High School, I have 3 5A all state (top 6), 20 state qualifiers (top 16),13 all Centennial League performers, 5 regional finalists (2 champs), and 8 national qualifiers, with 4 college scholarship recruits. I am the Program Director for the Smoky Hill Wrestling Club, and hold USA Wrestling Copper and Bronze Coaching Certifications.
In 2022-23, I was named Centennial League Coach of the Year.

In the same time in as LB Coach/Defensive Coordinator at Smoky Hill, I have developed 3 all state, 12 all league performers (including 1 DPOY), and 17 college scholarship recruits in football.

I have 10 years experience in developing and implementing strength and conditioning programs at the high school level as well, for football, wrestling, and cheerleading programs.

Prior to my time at Smoky Hill, I was an assistant coach at Grandview High School for 3 years fresh out of college. I was raised as a QB, so while most of my coaching experience is on defense, I am qualified to coach QBs, and can provide a breadth of offensive expertise as well.

I am a High School Math Teacher, with additional CDE endorsements in Social Studies, Special Education, Health, and Physical Education.

In high school, I was a 9x letterman and 2x All League Wrestler. I was a member of 3 League Champion Wrestling Teams.
I was a member of 2 League Champion football teams, and 2 Final Four teams.
I wrestled for 12 years (including youth), and played football for 8.
I ultimately made a poor choice to stop competing after high school, despite various college opportunities.

While I was not an "elite" level athlete, as a son of a coach, I excelled in making up performance in the margins, through fitness, knowledge, and work ethic. This has served me well as a coach myself.

I believe in pre planning all sessions based on athlete needs. These needs can be based on a few things: preparation for competition, offseason skill development, athletic skill/fitness development, or post competition fixes.

"Game speed" is not something that can be turned on and off, so I am a big believer in max effort=max output in structures that mimic the game as often as possible.
I do not believe in work for work sake. While work is better than no work, I want to maximize the time spent to compare as closely as possible to what the athlete will do in competition.

One thing that all sessions include is a vigorous warm up/pre activity prep. This is not just stretching, but a daily work on sport specific skills and general athletic development. Great athletes have great/consistent routines that prepare them best for competition.
